Climate Change Brings Serious Health Risks Much attention has been devoted in recent times to the environmental and economic effects of climate change. Much less attention, however, has been given to the possible effects of climate change, particularly global warming, on the health of the populations, particularly those from the poorest countries. This is a trend that requires prompt attention if the negative effects of climate change on health are to be avoided or minimized. According to some estimates, at least 1 in 6 people worldwide will suffer the consequences of climate change.
Thousands of Virginians Have Faced Years of Sickness-Inducing Landfill Pollution Residents of Bristol, Virginia, are reporting intense symptoms due to a city-owned landfill’s noxious and toxic fumes rica Nophlin woke with a sore throat one morning in early November, just as she has many mornings for the last two years. She checked on her two daughters and young cousin; two had the same symptoms. The girls often had headaches, upset stomachs, and throat pain. “It’s like almost every single night,” said Nophlin, a 37-year-old with shoulder-length black curls. Until late November, the four lived in an apartment complex in Bristol, Va., a half-mile from a city-owned landfill in an old quarry that has been emitting noxious and toxic fumes, including hydrogen sulfide, volatile organic compounds, and other gases. The fumes followed Nophlin between errands and greeted her outside her church. They kept the girls from enjoying the colorful playground outside her apartment. They seeped into the apartment, stealing sleep and appetites.

Martin Luther King Was a Radical, Not a Moderate King called himself a democratic socialist. He believed that America needed a “radical redistribution of economic and political power.” . . . But in his day, King was considered a dangerous troublemaker. Both Presidents John Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson worried that King was being influenced by Communists. King was harassed by the FBI and vilified in the media. The establishment’s campaign to denigrate King worked. In August 1966 – as King was bringing his civil rights campaign to Northern cities to address poverty, slums, housing segregation and bank lending discrimination – the Gallup Poll found that 63% of Americans had an unfavorable opinion of King, compared with 33% who viewed him favorably.

Dallas Fed, Home to the Largest Trading Scandal in Fed History, Quietly Runs a Help-Wanted Ad for a New General Counsel and Ethics Officer The Dallas Fed has not publicly announced the retirement or dismissal of its General Counsel, Sharon Sweeney. And yet, it is currently running a help-wanted ad to replace her. Sweeney is still listed as General Counsel on the Dallas Fed’s website. We placed a call to the bank’s media contact this morning to clarify the details and left a message. We’ll update this article if we receive further information. Sweeney has been with the Dallas Fed for the past 36 years. She doubles as the Dallas Fed’s Ethics Officer and put her signature to former Dallas Fed President Robert Kaplan’s outrageous financial disclosure forms, year after year. Those forms indicated that Kaplan was trading in and out of S&P 500 futures contracts in “over $1 million” trades – even in 2020 when he sat as a voting member of the Fed’s Open Market Committee and was privy to sensitive, market moving operations of the Fed to deal with plunging markets and business closures as a result of the pandemic. National Teachers’ Strike As Relentless Class Struggle Rocks Iran This month has seen a relentless series of over 230 strikes and protests in Iran. The most prominent of these was a two-day teachers’ strike on 11-13 December, involving tens of thousands of teachers in hundreds of cities across the country. The regime responded by arresting over 200 teachers and trade unionists. Meanwhile, sporadic strikes continue among miners, with workers of the Sangun copper mines in Varzaqan county organising an occupation after months of broken promises from the bosses.These are only the latest instances of a wave of strikes and protests that has been ongoing since 2018. Rather than being cowed, workers are only being further emboldened by the repression of the regime, which is mired in a state of growing crisis.

Reader: There Is No Such Thing as a “Public Charter School” A reader whose nom de plume is quickwrit explained in a recent comment that there is no such thing as a “public charter school.” In addition to the evidence supplied, bear in mind that several federal courts and the National Labor Relations Board have ruled that charter schools are not “state actors,” meaning not public schools. Even charter schools have sought to avoid accountability for their actions by insisting in court that they are not “state actors,” but private organizations with a government contract. If receiving public funds made your public agency, then every college and university that accepts federal funds would be public, not private, as would Lockheed Martin, Merck, and other corporations. Quickwrit writes: The impartial, non-political watchdog Office of Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Education has issued a report warning that so much taxpayer money is being skimmed away from America’s genuine public schools and pocketed by private corporate charter school operators that the IG investigation declared that: “Charter schools and their management organizations pose a potential risk to federal funds even as they threaten to fall short of meeting goals” because of financial fraud and their hidden ways for skimming of tax money into private pockets.
