Immediately following the Pequot Massacre, the occupiers worked diligently to whitewash history. The name of the tribe was erased from the map. The Pequot River became the Thames, and the geographic space the Pequot inhabited became known as New London. The whitewashing and erasure of Indigenous histories is not unique to this holiday, but it is, perhaps, one of the most ironic instances of indigenous mass murder in service of white European colonial expansion. The idea that we celebrate the notion that Indigenous peoples and the white European occupiers who sought their extinction were able to put their differences to the side long enough to sit down and eat in relative peace and harmony is deeply problematic. Even more so is the idea that it was the white European occupiers who had to teach and demonstrate “civility” to these “barbarous savages.” With the Pequot massacre in mind, it is clear which group in the Thanksgiving picture were the real “barbarous savages” and who were the ones practicing civility. — Thanksgiving and the Whitewashing of History

The Second Gilded Age: the Revenge of the New Robber Barons The 2024 election witnessed the return of a new generation of robber barons exemplified by Elon Musk. With the exception of a global vs nation reach, they are – sadly — little different from the original generation of robber barons of a century-plus ago. In 1859, Henry J. Raymond, editor of The New York Times, made a comparison between Cornelius Vanderbilt, the railroad tycoon, and “those old German barons, who from their eyries along the Rhine, swooped down upon the commerce of the noble river and wrung tribute from every passenger that floated by….” The notion of “baron” stuck and, in time, it was joined by “robber” to forge a new concept, the “robber baron,” to define a group of powerful individuals destroying competitors, controlling markets and shaping the nation’s economy. Profitability is the Problem: COP-Out 29: The Baku Betrayal The 2024 climate summit was a disaster for the developing world, a betrayal of both people and planet There was a tortuous and painful end to COP29, the international climate change conference held in oil-rich Baku, Azerbaijan. The main issue was how much would the rich countries hand over to the poor countries to pay for the measures to mitigate global warming and handle the damage caused by rising ‘greenhouse gas’ emissions. The finance target set was for more than $1.3trn a year by 2035. But the final deal was based on just $300bn in actual grants and low-interest loans from the developed world. The rest would have to come from private investors and perhaps levies on fossil fuels and frequent flyers – the details of which remained vague. The offer from the ‘developed’ countries, funded from their national budgets and overseas aid, is supposed to form the inner core of a so-called ‘layered’ finance settlement, accompanied by a middle layer of new forms of finance such as new taxes on fossil fuels and high-carbon activities, carbon trading and ‘innovative’ forms of finance; and an outermost layer of investment from the private sector, into projects such as solar and windfarms. This was a cop-out from providing real money transfers. Mohamed Adow, director of the Power Shift Africa thinktank, said: “This [summit] has been a disaster for the developing world. It’s a betrayal of both people and planet, by wealthy countries who claim to take climate change seriously. Rich countries have promised to ‘mobilize’ some funds in the future, rather than provide them now. The check is in the mail. But lives and livelihoods in vulnerable countries are being lost now.”

At the fifth and final session of the United Nations Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee to finalize a global plastics treaty in Busan, South Korea, one anti-pollution campaigner noted on Wednesday that “waste pickers, Indigenous peoples, youth leaders, and frontline community members have left their families to travel thousands of miles to be here, not to protect their business interests, but because they are fighting for survival.” But a new analysis from the Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) raises questions about how marginalized communities fighting plastic pollution will ensure their voices aren’t drowned out by the fossil fuel and chemical industry lobbyists in attendance. “The fact that they are forced to compete for the ear of their representatives with the very industry that is poisoning their communities is a serious injustice,” said Ana Rocha, director of the global plastics program at the Global Alliance for Incinerators Alternatives.

France: Crisis in the Economy and the Regime Amidst Rising Class Struggle French capitalism has entered a new period of massive job destruction. Announcements of closures and redundancy plans are multiplying: Michelin, Auchan, ArcelorMittal, and many others. According to the General Confederation of Labour (CGT), 150,000 industrial jobs are at risk in the short term. By closing down production, contractors are setting off a chain reaction, with suppliers and subcontractors filing for bankruptcy or laying off their own workers. At the same time, the general downturn in the economy is hitting many small and medium-sized businesses hard. The number of bankruptcies – 66,800 since January 2024 – has exceeded its peak in 2010. The fall in demand and the explosion in energy prices have made it impossible for thousands of small businesses to repay the loans granted by the state during the pandemic. Last September, the Banque de France revised its growth forecasts for 2024 down to 1.1 percent, and has forecast 1.2 percent growth in 2025. But these figures do not take into account the current wave of bankruptcies, closures and redundancies. Combined with the tens of billions of euros in budget cuts planned by the government, rising unemployment can only further undermine demand, and therefore growth. For the Barnier government, there is also the risk of being subject to a motion of censure in the National Assembly – and the risk of provoking major social unrest.

Yesterday, ‘counter-terrorism’ police raided a Kurdish community centre and arrested several people. This follows Starmer and Lammy’s recent cosying-up to Erdoğan’s bloodstained regime. Yesterday – a month after the Turkish foreign secretary visited his counterpart David Lammy in Westminster – British counter-terrorism police raided the Kurdish Community Centre in Harringay, London, as well as the homes of several members of the local Kurdish community. Seven people have been arrested pending charges over alleged ties to the Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK) – which the British state has proscribed as a terrorist organisation. The centre has now been shut down for investigation, which the police claim will take two weeks. Immediately following the raid, a spontaneous demonstration erupted on nearby Green Lanes. The police brutally cracked down upon the protest as well, arresting handfuls of people. This is what free speech looks like in so-called ‘liberal’ ‘democratic’ Britain.
