For some days after violence erupted last Saturday I was struck by the absence in the mainstream coverage of any explanation as to why Hamas determined to launch an attack against a power it cannot hope to defeat. Why would the Gaza leadership decide on such a course? I eventually came upon reports indicating that the Netanyahu government had been again provoking Hamas, probably but not certainly with intent, by permitting ultranationalists to enter the grounds of the al–Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, a sacred site for Muslims. Sequence: Hamas warned the Israeli government about such interventions on October 1. This was understood to be a Hamas red line. Three days later dozens of intentionally provocative settlers forced their way into the mosque complex—this while thousands more had been touring the complex since Hamas issued its October 1 warning. So far as I have been able to find, accounts of these events have appeared only in Al Jazeera and other non–Western publications. You will search long and fruitlessly in Western media to discover the “why” of the Hamas offensive, the motive. The al–Aqsa events may have lit the fuse, but if this is so, it is doubtful they alone explain the Hamas attacks. There are three-quarters of a century to take into account—the ad hoc persecutions and harassments, the confiscations of land, the raids on Palestinian towns, the arrests and murders—and altogether the punishing psychological humiliation of a people for 75 years. More than a year since Israel launched its war on Gaza in response to the October 7 attack, we speak with the award-winning author, journalist and activist Naomi Klein, who says a “trauma industry” has emerged to keep Israeli society permanently in crisis in order to justify the country’s expansionist wars and human rights abuses. “Though the Israeli government likes to frame everything that is happening now as a response to October 7, this is a preexisting agenda,” says Klein, whose latest essay for The Guardian explores how Israel “has made trauma a weapon of war.”
Israeli Use of White Phosphorus in Lebanon Injured UN Peacekeepers: Report One observer said the illegal use of the devastating chemical agent is “yet another reason” why the Biden administration “must halt offensive weapons shipments to Israel.” Israel Defense Forces troops recently forced their way into a United Nations peacekeeper base in southern Lebanon and fired white phosphorus munitions in close enough proximity to injure 15 U.N. personnel, according to a report published Tuesday. The Financial Times reviewed “a confidential report outlining a dozen recent incidents in which the IDF attacked international troops in Lebanon.” The newspaper said the report was prepared by a country contributing troops to the 10,000-strong U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

White phosphorus is a chemical waxy solid substance typically appearing yellowish or colourless, and some have described its odour as resembling garlic.
- It ignites instantly upon contact with oxygen. It is often used by militaries to illuminate battlefields, to generate a smokescreen and as an incendiary.
- Once ignited, white phosphorus is very difficult to extinguish. It sticks to surfaces like skin and clothing.
- White phosphorus is harmful to humans by all routes of exposure. The smoke from burning phosphorus is also harmful to the eyes and respiratory tract due to the presence of phosphoric acids and phosphine.White phosphorus can cause deep and severe burns, penetrating even through bone. After exposure, the priority is to stop the burning process. Caution must be exercised to avoid secondary exposure of medical personnel from victims suffering from white phosphorus burns. White phosphorus can re-ignite during or after initial treatment due to the contact with oxygen. Use clean water/medically prepared saline throughout the process.

Do Environmental Standards Protect Public Health? Federal environmental standards were created to protect the environment and human health. Regulations to limit chemicals in water, air, soil, and food set requirements that must be upheld by all levels of government (local, state, tribal, etc.), ideally creating uniform policy and protections for communities across the country. Examples include the Safe Drinking Water Act, Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act and the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act that regulate pollutants in drinking water, air, water and food, respectively. It’s natural to think that these laws would protect people from exposure to toxic chemicals, but this is only partially true. While these regulations have made significant improvements in drinking water, air, water and food quality, there are many gaps and limitations in these regulations that result in people unwittingly being exposed to toxic chemicals, especially in environmental justice communities. With one exception, a major problem with these laws is that they do not establish legally enforceable standards. Instead, government agencies have developed guidelines and recommendations. Another significant problem is that several key regulations only apply to point-source pollutants (“single, identifiable sources of pollution from which pollutants are discharged, such as a pipe, factory smokestack, ditch, etc.”), leaving non-point source pollutants (“pollution that comes from multiple diffuse sources,”) to state, tribal, or local jurisdiction or without regulations. T his gap results in discrepancies in exposures to chemicals and health outcomes of communities based on where people live and work, especially in areas described as Sacrifice Zones – areas that are disproportionately impacted by pollution produced by proximity to intensive, concentrated industry, often in low-income communities of color. Without standards in place to protect these areas, these communities are exposed to abnormally high levels of chemicals which increases their risk of cancer, respiratory illnesses, and other diseases.
‘Outrageous’: New Roundup Is 45 Times More Toxic “With the new formulations of Roundup, Bayer had the opportunity to make us safer, but it did the opposite,” one expert said. Facing tens of thousands of lawsuits after it acquired Monsanto, Bayer promised to remove cancer-linked glyphosate from its commercial Roundup weed killers by 2023. But an analysis published by Friends of the Earth on Tuesday reveals that the replacement is even more dangerous. The environmental group found that many residential Roundup products still do contain glyphosate, and those that don’t have replaced it with a chemical cocktail that is 45 times more toxic to human health following long-term exposure.
