Native Higher Ed May Be Shortchanged $250 Million Per Year by Congress Many colleges in Indigenous communities have major infrasructural problems because they cannot afford maintenance. In the 1970s, Congress committed to funding a higher education system controlled by Indigenous communities. These tribal colleges and universities were intended to serve students who’d been disadvantaged by the nation’s history of violence and racism toward Native Americans, including efforts to eradicate their languages and cultures. But walking through Little Big Horn College in Montana with Emerson Bull Chief, its dean of academics, showed just how far that idea has to go before becoming a reality. Bull Chief dodged signs warning “Keep out!” as he approached sheets of plastic sealing off the campus day care center. It was late April and the center and nearby cafeteria have been closed since January, when a pipe burst, flooding the building, the oldest at the 44-year-old college. The facilities remained closed into late September. … While the school appears to be in better condition than most tribal colleges, its roofs leak, sending rain through skylights in the gym and wellness center, which needs $1 million in repairs. An electronic sign marking the entrance has been sitting dark since a vehicle hit it months ago. College leaders said they have no idea when they will be able to afford repairs. It’s a reality faced by many of the 37 schools in the system, which spans 14 states. Another Disaster Capitalism Fraud — Insurance!: An Imperfect Storm: Hurricane Helene Exposes Insurers’ Climate Hypocrisy Insurance companies facilitate climate change by financing fossil fuels — and then seek to raise rates because of the damage it causes. Hurricane Helene decimated much of the southeastern United States last week, causing widespread destruction and claiming the lives of more than 230 people across six states after it made landfall in Florida. North Carolina bore the brunt of the damage caused by the climate change-intensified storm. As North Carolina homeowners face a future of rebuilding, they are also staring down the barrel of an insurance crisis. Hurricane Helene exposed not only the vulnerability of communities to extreme weather but also the flaws in the US insurance system. The Deluge: Another Climate-Driven Disaster Catastrophic flooding devastated western parts of North Carolina, destroying vital infrastructure and leaving tens of thousands of residents without power or running water more than a week after the storm. This deluge is indisputably a result of climate change: global warming enables hurricanes to hold more water vapor, producing more intense rainfall. Hurricane Helene dumped some 20 trillion gallons of water on Georgia, Tennessee, the Carolinas, and Florida — 50 percent more rainfall than it would have without climate change, according to experts. Hurricane Helene has demonstrated that no part of the United States is safe from the climate crisis. Asheville, North Carolina, was once seen as a climate haven — safe from the increasingly frequent and severe extreme weather events caused by global warming. Now, the bucolic town is inundated with murky brown floodwater, and its water supply system, which serves more than 150,000 people, is badly damaged. As the floodwaters begin to recede, the staggering costs of rebuilding homes and communities are starting to come into focus. Homeowners in North Carolina may face even more financial pain if the state allows property insurance companies to raise their rates once again.

In 2022 alone, Allstate spent $617 million on advertising. State Farm spent a whopping $1.05 billion. But if insurance giants such as State Farm truly rated as our “good neighbors,” they would be behaving quite a bit differently than their award-winning advertising suggests. In hurricane-plagued Florida, for instance, State Farm last year denied 46.4 percent of homeowner claims, refusals that directly impacted over 76,000 households. “Property insurers who deny legitimate claims,” notes Martin Weiss, the founder of the nation’s only independent insurer rating agency, “are sending the implicit message, ‘If you don’t like it, sue us.’” To add injury to that insult, Weiss adds, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, R, signed into law in 2022 new legislation that makes policyholder lawsuits against insurers “far more difficult.”

FEMA Was First Targeted by Project 2025; Now FEMA Workers Are Being Threatened While Providing Disaster Relief in North Carolina On Sunday, the Washington Post reported that it had obtained an email penned by a Forest Service official who was assisting in Hurricane Helene recovery response operations in Western North Carolina indicating that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) “had advised agencies on the ground to relocate workers, noting that U.S. military personnel ‘had come across…trucks of armed militia saying they were out hunting FEMA.’ ” While the report of trucks of armed militia has yet to be confirmed, a North Carolina man armed with a handgun and AR-style rifle was arrested on Saturday after allegedly stating that he was going to “go mess up some FEMA personnel,” according to Captain Jamie Keever of the Rutherford County, North Carolina Sheriff’s Office. The arrested man, 44-year old William Jacob Parsons, has been released on bail. That decision will, no doubt, raise anxiety levels among the already stressed government workers who are attempting to provide relief efforts to the decimated towns in Western North Carolina under the already challenging conditions.
