The Looming Catastrophe in the Middle East (w/ Gideon Levy) | The Chris Hedges Report The Israeli journalist Gideon Levy has spent over three decades reporting on the occupation of Palestine, asking his readers to examine the human cost of apartheid and genocide. He has paid a heavy price for his courage, for defying an Israeli media and educational system that masks and denies Israeli crimes, insists Jews are eternal victims and employs racist tropes to dehumanize Palestinians. He is a pariah in his own country. But Levy refuses to be intimidated. His reporting has long been some of the best and most important reporting on Palestine. His new book “The Killing of Gaza: Reports on a Catastrophe” elucidates lies used to justify apartheid and genocide, excoriates Israel for its lust for violence, including against children, and condemns the cheerleading of the mass killing in Gaza. He warns that the poison of Israel’s settler colonial project is not only an injustice for the Palestinians, but will ultimately lead to the collective suicide of the Israeli state. The first part of his book focuses on what takes place in Palestine before October 7, providing the needed context for the current genocide and the alarming increase in violence by Israeli soldiers and colonists in the West Bank. Gaza is the world’s largest open-air prison. Its 2.3 million people have been under siege for 18 years. The brutality inflicted by Israel during those 18 years, including the killing and maiming of thousands of Palestinians, he writes, spawned a counter brutality when Palestinians broke out of their concentration camp on October 7. To understand is not to condone. But if we do not understand the cycle of violence will not be halted. Joining me to discuss his new book, “The Killing of Gaza,” is Gideon Levy.

U.S. President Joe Biden and Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib on Saturday had notably different responses to Israel’s intense bombing campaign in Lebanon over the past 24 hours, which killed hundreds of people including key Hezbollah leaders. “Our country is funding this bloodbath,” Tlaib (D-Mich.) said on social media Saturday morning, sharing a post from Zeteo‘s Prem Thakker with videos of the Israeli assault on Lebanon that began Friday, as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was in New York City to address the United Nations General Assembly. “Sending more of our troops and bombs to the region is not advancing peace,” added Tlaib, the only Palestinian American in Congress and a leading critic of Israel’s yearlong genocide in the Gaza Strip. “The U.S. government are conspirators to the war criminal Netanyahu’s genocidal plan.”

Boundaries of Eretz Yisrael Eretz Yisrael is an ambiguously defined geographical area. The most expansive definition—that of the “promise”— extends from “the river of Egypt” (probably Wadi el-Arish, not the Nile) to the Euphrates. This definition encompasses areas including the State of Israel, the West Bank (Judea and Samaria), the Gaza Strip, eastern Sinai, Lebanon and most of Syria and south-eastern Turkey. Many scholars believe that these boundaries reflect the area controlled—or believed to have been controlled—by Kings David and Solomon.

The map is entirely in Hebrew, including the key. Belkind was born in Logoisk. In 1882, while studying at Kharkov University, he was among the students who founded the Bilu movement and went to Eretz Israel at the head of its first group. He led the opposition against Baron Edmond de Rothschild’s officials and, on being expelled by them from Rishon le-Zion, settled in Gederah. In 1889 Belkind opened a private Hebrew school in Jaffa. He was accepted as a teacher at the Alliance Israelite Universelle in Jerusalem in 1892, and there published several textbooks. In 1903 he founded an agricultural training school at Shefeyah (near Zikhron Ya’akov) for orphans of the Kishinev pogroms whom he brought to Eretz Israel. Apart from numerous articles and popular pamphlets, Belkind published a geography of Palestine, Erez Yisrael ba-Zeman ha-Zeh (“The Land of Israel Today,” 1928). He died in Berlin, where he had gone for medical treatment. 
The Killing of Nasrallah: Netanyahu is Provoking Iran to Enter War After massive air strikes on the Dahiyeh district of Beirut, the Israeli military succeeded in assassinating the leader of Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, together with other top commanders of the organisation. It seems that the head of Hezbollah’s southern front, Ali Karaki, was also killed in the attack. Netanyahu ordered the strike personally and he is clearly provoking both Hezbollah, and its main backer Iran, to enter into all-out war with Israel. This danger is now closer than ever. The US Administration was quick to announce that it had nothing to do with the attack, although the Israelis stated that they had informed them in advance. The fact remains that in yesterday’s attack, the missiles used to kill Nasrallah were provided by the United States. They can try and distance themselves, but everyone can see the role of US imperialism here.
Nyt, Guardian Parrot Israel’s Absurd ‘Bombing to De-Escalate’ Framing No matter how many people Israel kills, or how much it expands its ‘war,’ everything they do is framed as self-defensive and de-escalatory. This past week, Israel massively escalated its attacks on Lebanon, killing 32 and maiming over 3,000 in so-called “pager attacks” (e.g. a textbook war crime), and killing 558 people, including 34 children, by dropping over 2,000 bombs in 24ours and unleashing a fresh set of bombings in Beirut on Friday, flattening several residential buildings and killing hundreds more. The scenes of carnage are staggering, hospitals are overwhelmed, families are running for their lives, people are justifiably scared of all electronic devices, and terror permeates Lebanon. This was, by far, the deadliest week in Lebanon since the Lebanese Civil War ended 34 years ago.
The War of Legitimacy: How the International Criminal Court and the UN Gen. Assembly Challenged Israeli, US Impunity Two historic events regarding the Israeli occupation of Palestine took place on 19 July and 18 September. The first was a most comprehensive “advisory opinion” by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which reiterated that the Israeli occupation of Palestine is illegal and must come to an immediate end. The second arrived two months later, when the UN General Assembly set, for the first time in history, an exact time frame for when the Israeli occupation of Palestine must end!
Netanyahu: Israel Is Fighting a War on Seven Fronts Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu slammed the UN during his remarks at the 79th General Assembly summit on Friday. He called the body a swamp of antisemitism while saying Israel needed to defend itself on seven fronts. The Israeli leader’s speech was contentious. Before Netanyahu took to the podium, Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif blasted Israel for waging a genocide in Gaza and creating a war with Lebanon. As Netanyahu began his address, a large portion of the UN General Assembly body walked out. During his remarks, Netanyahu referred to the UN General Assembly as a “swamp of antisemitic bile.” He went on to slam the International Criminal Court (ICC) for considering charging him with war crimes, adding the true war criminals are in Iran and its allied nations. During his address, Netanyahu presented two maps, one titled “the blessing” and the other “the curse.” The Israeli leader said Tel Aviv is still seeking a normalization agreement with Saudi Arabia. He claimed that if Riyadh established official ties with Israel, the world would receive a “blessing,” but Iran represented a “curse” to the region. The Israeli leader explained “the blessing” was establishing a “landbridge” from India to Israel. The blessing requires Saudi Arabia to enter the Abraham Accords and normalize ties with Israel. Netanyahu claimed that would have happened, but the October 7 Hamas attack prevented the deal. In the map titled “the curse,” five countries were represented in black: Iran, Iraq, Syria, Yemen and Lebanon. The Israeli leader claimed that Tehran was working to eliminate Tel Aviv using its allies in the region. Netanyahu presented the conflict as a battle between forces of civilization against barbarism. When discussing Gaza, Netanyahu said “Hamas must go.” He added that any end to the war that would see Hamas remain in power in Gaza is equivalent to allowing the Nazis to rebuild Germany after World War II.
Mass Walkout as ‘Global Pariah’ Netanyahu Addresses UN General Assembly The public rebuke of the Israeli prime minister, said one observer, “demonstrates the international community’s rejection of genocide.” A large number of diplomats and other officials walked out of the United Nations General Assembly in New York City on Friday as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu prepared to defend his nation’s slaughter of more than 41,000 people in the Gaza Strip during the past year and over 700 in Lebanon this week. Journalists and critics of the “global pariah” shared photos and videos of people filing out of the hall before Netanyahu’s address—which came just a day after 25 anti-genocide protesters were arrested for blocking his motorcade in Manhattan.
