Kamala Harris Accepted Trump’s Racist Lie That Immigration Is Bad In a total capitulation to a far-right narrative, even typical liberal shibboleths about our “nation of immigrants” were absent on Tuesday night on the presidential debate stage Tuesday, former President Donald Trump spewed reliably racist and lie-riddled diatribes about towns being taken over by “millions of people pouring into our country from prisons and jails, from mental institutions and insane asylums.” Vice President Kamala Harris, for her part, didn’t bother to counter the sentiment, the central ideological violence at the heart of Trump’s message. Harris, albeit in the predictably moderated tones of a Democratic border authoritarian, upheld the right-wing lie that immigration — the migration of poor people, that is — should be stopped.

As often happens, Biden’s impolitic pronouncement captured the larger dynamics at play. The Democrats are defending themselves against Republican attacks on immigration by going on offense — but for the most part, they’re doing so on Republican terms. The legislation Biden was promoting, the Emergency National Security Supplemental Appropriations Act, included a host of border security measures. It would have significantly expanded ICE capacity for detention, made it harder to win asylum and effectively blocked asylum seekers who had crossed the border irregularly (that is, without authorization between ports of entry) — all Republican priorities. The bill would have also sent military aid to Ukraine (as Democrats and the remaining national security traditionalists on the Republican side wanted) and to Israel (as everyone but a depressingly small number of left-wingers in Congress wanted) and sent humanitarian aid to several regions, including Gaza (as Democrats looking to differentiate themselves from Republicans wanted). For migrants, the bill promised increases in the allocation of employment- and family-based visas, and protections for certain youth green-card applicants and Afghan evacuees — good things, but not nearly enough to make the rest palatable.

Murder in Beita: the IDF’s Killing of Ayşenur Eygi Beita is a Palestinian village in the occupied West Bank a few miles from Nablus. Beita is an ancient town with houses dating back to the Roman occupation of Palestine. Unusually Dry Growing Seasons in Central America Associated With Migration to The US In a new article in Scientific Reports, which is in the portfolio of Nature journals, a team of scholars from the University of Utah and The University of Texas at Austin found that drier than normal periods during growing seasons in Central America were associated with emigration to the United States in recent years. “The findings suggest climate change impacts, particularly on the agricultural sector, likely contributed to a surge in out-migration to the United States, including whole families,” said Stephanie Leutert, director of the Strauss Center for International Security and Law’s Central America and Mexico Policy Initiative at The University of Texas at Austin and one of the study’s lead authors.

Saving European Capital: It’s An Existential Challenge About a year ago, the European Union’s Commission asked Mario Draghi to write a landmark report on the future of Europe’s economy. Draghi is a former Goldman Sachs banker, former head of the Italian central bank and then President of the European Central Bank, before becoming briefly the prime minister of Italy. So, in the eyes of the Commission, he was clearly suited to look for ways of saving European capital from falling behind the rest of the world. This week Draghi’s report was published. This is at a time when the major European economies are either in recession (Germany, Sweden, Austria) or stagnating (France, Italy). Hardly any EU economy is growing more than 1% a year and the EU/EZ area average is just +0.2%.

The fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces started in April 2023. It was sparked by two generals competing for power after a failed political transition. Since then, the conflict has taken on a regional and international dimension. Several external actors are supporting the two warring parties with arms, ammunition and money. The United Arab Emirates is emerging as one of the foreign players most invested in the war.
