Who’s a Bigger Threat to Democracy—Immigrants, or Billionaires? When President Joe Biden said in a phone call to MSNBC’s Morning Joe recently, “I’m getting so frustrated with the elites… the elites of the party. I don’t care what the millionaires think,” former Labor Secretary Robert Reich wrote that, “It was the first time any modern president has admitted that the elites of the party are the millionaires (and billionaires) who fund it.” While Biden’s comments were in reference to the movement to oust him from the 2024 Democratic presidential nomination, it was an important admission about who really wields power in our democracy. We may think of elections in terms of one person, one vote. But, not only do undemocratic structures such as the electoral college dilute our votes, the money that elites flaunt places a hefty thumb on the scales of who represents us. Yet, we hear more about the threat of, say, immigrants than the threat of billionaires, to our democracy.

United Auto Workers Join Mobilization Against Netanyahu Congressional Visit The United Auto Workers (UAW), one of the largest trade unions in the US, just announced that it will be joining a mass mobilization to protest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Congress. Tens of thousands are set to mobilize to DC to denounce the visit on July 24. The UAW, which represents more than 400,000 workers in various sectors, has taken many historic steps to mark its support for the Palestine solidarity movement in the United States. In December, the UAW became one of the first major labor unions to call for a ceasefire. And following the brutal crackdown against the Gaza solidarity encampment at the University of California – Los Angeles (UCLA), UAW Local 4811, which represents academic workers within the University of California system, went on strike for the right to protest for Palestine. Brandon Mancilla, a member of the UAW’s International Executive Board will be speaking at the mass mobilization on behalf of the union. In regards to the UAW joining the demonstration, the union stated, “Since December, the UAW has been calling for a ceasefire in Israel and Palestine, and for an end to the war on Gaza. This week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to come to Congress to ask our government to keep supporting this war. We reject this insult to all those calling for peace and justice. On Wednesday, July 24th, the UAW, along with the National Labor Network for Ceasefire, is joining a mass mobilization in Washington, DC to oppose Netanyahu’s visit, and to call for an end to all US military aid to this war.”

July 21 Was Earth’s Hottest Day on Record As of June 2024, the past 13 months have all been the hottest on record. July 21 was Earth’s hottest day on record, overtaking the record set last July during the hottest year in millennia. The European Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) found that Sunday’s average air surface temperature soared to 17.09°C , or 62.76°F, according to preliminary data. While that is only 0.1°C warmer than the previous record — set on July 6, 2023 — it was nearly 3°C higher than the pre-2023 record, set at 16.8°C on August 13, 2016. “What is truly staggering is how large the difference is between the temperature of the last 13 months and the previous temperature records,” C3S Director Carlo Buontempo said in a statement. “We are now in truly uncharted territory and as the climate keeps warming, we are bound to see new records being broken in future months and years.”

In addition, significant heat waves were observed both in the West (early in the month), and then in the central and eastern parts of the country during the second half of the month. As is often seen during hot summer months, rainfall was below normal across much of the western and eastern parts of the nation, with above-average precipitation falling only in parts of the upper Midwest and southern Plains. In January 2019, the GAO published a report on the astronomical costs that were being incurred to attend to the travel needs of a billionaire president and his jet-setting adult children. The GAO found that in just a four-week span of February 3 through March 5, 2017, taxpayers spent $13.6 million protecting the President on four trips to his luxury resort and residence, Mar-a-Lago, in Palm Beach, Florida. That works out to $3.4 million per trip. Multiply that by the 145 trips the President took to Mar-a-Lago during his four years as President and you’re looking at a $495 million taxpayer tab.

UK Covers Up Gaza Spy Footage from Day of Aid Worker Massacre

Britain’s Ministry of Defence holds video surveillance footage of Gaza from the day that Israel killed seven international aid workers but is refusing to publish the tape. Among those killed in the World Central Kitchen convoy on 1 April were three British military veterans: John Chapman, James Kirby and James ‘Jim’ Henderson. The footage was taken by a Royal Air Force (RAF) surveillance plane which spent approximately five hours above Gaza that day. It seemingly returned to base in Cyprus minutes before the airstrikes were launched. The RAF may therefore have collected footage of events leading up to the tragedy, which could provide clarity over Israeli claims that “Hamas gunmen” were seen near the convoy. World Central Kitchen founder Jose Andres criticised Israel’s investigation into the incident, in which two senior officers were fired over what was deemed a “grave mistake”. Andres told ABC: “The investigation should be much more deeper…we need more information. We need to see better quality videos.” Britain has now emerged as an unlikely source of such footage, having sent more than 200 spy flights over Gaza supposedly to help Israel locate hostages held by Hamas. The UK military confirmed in a Freedom of Information (FOI) response to Declassified that “video footage of Gaza from the Shadow R1 [surveillance] flight on 1 April is held.” However the Ministry of Defence (MoD) claims the tape is exempt from disclosure on security grounds and hinted that its contents may relate to UK special forces or MI6.

Just Stop Oil (JSO) co-founder Roger Hallam – alongside defendants Cressida Gethin, Louise Lancaster, Daniel Shaw, and Lucia Whittaker-De-Abreu – have been found guilty of “conspiracy to cause a public nuisance”. Shockingly, Hallam was sentenced for five years in prison, and the other co-defendants for four years. This is the longest sentence for peaceful protest in British history.
Harehills riot: The Product of a Sick System Last night, rioting erupted in a deprived Leeds suburb, sparked by a disturbance involving the West Yorkshire Police. Social explosions like this are the direct product of a sick system, and offer a taste of what is to come under Starmer’s government. Last night, rioting broke out in the Leeds suburb of Harehills following a disturbance involving the police. The explosive response from members of the local community provides a snapshot of the rage developing across Britain. The spark that lit the blaze was the heavy-handed removal, by police and social services, of kids from their family home. A shocking video of the removal shows two police officers dragging screaming children away from their house, with dozens of officers standing guard to hold back the growing crowd. The response from the youth of Harehills was immediate. Videos of children, young men and women throwing stones and whatever else they could get their hands on have been shared widely on social media.
