United States Capitalism Moves Closer to WWIII!: U.S. Cluster Bombs Kill Russian Children at Beach The bombing severely escalates tensions for the U.S. in Russia, but it barely makes the news here at home.The war in Ukraine is escalating with terrifying rapidity. On Sunday, Ukrainian forces fired five U.S.-supplied ATACMS missiles — carrying U.S.-supplied cluster bombs — at the Crimean city of Sevastopol. The exact target is unclear. But as Russian air defenses shot them down, one of the missiles with its multiple cluster bomblets accidentally rained down upon Russian families enjoying a day at the beach, killing at least four people (including two children) and injuring more than 150.
Will Biden’s Saudi Security Pact Spark a Nuclear Arms Race? The Biden administration is reportedly close to finalizing a controversial security agreement with the Saudi kingdom. Beyond a contractual obligation to defend Saudi Arabia with American troops, the agreement also offers Riyadh American assistance in developing the nuclear fuel cycle. This would grant the Saudis access to sensitive enrichment technology, which critics argue would put the kingdom on the brink of acquiring nuclear arms. Given Washington’s long-standing policy of restricting the spread of enrichment technologies, Biden’s proposed deal is raising concerns in the global non-proliferation community. What are the non-proliferation implications of the Saudi security pact? New Report Finds Nearly All Deaths in ICE Custody Over 5 Years Were Preventable None of the private prison corporations involved have faced any meaningful consequences. Nearly all of the deaths in U.S. immigration detention facilities over a five-year period were preventable, but no officials have faced serious accountability, a new report found. Of the 52 people who died in detention under the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from January 2017 to December 2021, 49 of the deaths, or 95%, were preventable or possibly preventable if appropriate medical care had been provided.

They are the world’s most widely used insecticides, also known as neonicotinoids. In use since the 1990s, these neurotoxic chemicals have been linked to massive bee losses, vast water and soil contamination, ecosystem-wide harms, and human health concerns, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council. As you know, I get emails everyday from all over the country (and the world) asking for help. This email from Michigan really upset me. We are at a loss to protect our small bee business and our bees. We have had our entire business decimated last October (more than 3 million bees poisoned) due to a neighbors multiple (11) applications of chemicals. We supply beekeepers with queens, nucs, and boxes and honey to many local businesses. We have reached out to our local township officials, the Department of Agriculture, local news outlets, EPA, and have retained an attorney to fight for our pollinators. So far, we have had no results and fear our bees will again be poisoned this year. These noxious chemicals will be the death of us all! We are ready and willing to fight for our pollinators, be them natives or not. Any assistance would be so greatly appreciated.

Bigger Than Dobbs: The War on Women is a War on Democracy The war on women is everywhere: in the home, locally, nationally and globally. In 2018, the US National Sexual Violence Resource Center published that 81% of women reported experiencing some form of sexual harassment and/or sexual assault in their lifetime. Further, the majority of violence against women is perpetrated by male intimate partners and acquaintances. There are myriad other misogynist wars on women worldwide – including military wars; sex trafficking, prostitution and pornography; the theft of female and lesbian sexual identity by some in the trans movement; child marriage, female genital mutilation, and so on. But none at this moment is so intensive as Israel’s and the US’ genocidal war on Gaza: 70 percent of those killed are women and their children. Israel’s bombing of hospitals with maternity wards; the starvation of pregnant and breast-feeding women and the record-acute malnutrition among newborns and young children speak loud and clear — End Palestinian women’s potential to give life and the survival of Palestinian babies and children.

Congressman Andy Barr Stacks a Hearing on the Fed’s Stress Tests with Lobbyists for Megabanks Yesterday the House Financial Institutions and Monetary Policy Subcommittee held a hearing titled “Stress Testing: What’s Inside the Black Box?” The hearing was convened to examine the manner in which the Federal Reserve conducts its stress tests of the megabanks. The witnesses called to testify included the following: an employee of the Financial Services Forum, a registered lobbyist for banks; an employee of the Bank Policy Institute, a registered lobbyist for banks; Jonathan Gould, a lawyer from Jones Day, whose clients are banks; and one lonely soul, Greg Feldberg, Research Director of the Yale Program on Financial Stability, who was the only credible voice on the witness panel.

‘Democracy Must Be Respected’: Bolivian Leader Replaces Military Chiefs Over Coup Attempt Leftists and political leaders around the world slammed the coup effort as Bolivia’s trade union federation called for an emergency mass mobilization and a general strike.Bolivian President Luis Arce replaced top military leaders on Wednesday in response to an attempted coup d’état in which troops took over Plaza Murillo in La Paz and rammed an armored vehicle into the doors of the presidential palace so soldiers could storm the building. “We denounce irregular mobilizations of some units of the Bolivian army,” Arce, a member of the Movement for Socialism (MAS) party, said on social media. “Democracy must be respected.”

Los Angeles County supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to buy up and forgive millions of dollars in medical debt as part of a comprehensive plan to tackle a $2.9 billion burden that weighs on almost 800,000 residents.
