New York City – Independent Presidential candidate Dr. Cornel West today urged for peace in the Holy Land upon learning about the situation in Palestine and Israel that has already left 100s dead and even more people injured. “For this to occur on the Jewish Sabbath, on the day when the festival of Sukkot reaches its conclusion and Jewish siblings around the globe celebrate Simchat Torah, the joy associated with their holy book, is heartbreaking and a call for global action” explained Dr. West. He continued, “Until the global community holds up the value of precious Palestinian lives in line with the value of precious Jewish lives, this violent cycle of death and destruction will continue unabated.”     Dr. West called for an immediate cessation of all violence, including violent rhetoric uttered by certain Western nations. He shared, “Western nations and colonial powers from right here in the United States to the European Union must be conscious of their language as this situation unfolds. We need not allow our words to act as fuel to exacerbate a fire that’s been burning for too many decades.” He added, “President Biden, and other world leaders must spend less time conjuring a fog of war with subjective and violent vernacular associated with who does and who doesn’t have the right to defend themselves and more time evoking a language of love and dignity for all people involved.”    A well known Christian with roots in liberation theology, Dr. West called on the global community to immediately commence a discussion that will end the war between Israel and Palestine once and for all. “We all desire to manifest the beautiful scripture of Isaiah 2:4…nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more,” Dr. West declared, “However, this will not be a reality until Israel and Western nations understand that the pathway to and for peace in the Holy Land must be parallel with a pathway to and for liberation and dignity for Palestine.” Dr. West offered his prayers, his love, and his condolences for the lives lost and injured, and his hopes for immediate and lasting deescalation initiatives.

The Gaza Ghetto Uprising The uprising began on the anniversary of another one, which had become a revolution.  The occupying power had had informants throughout the ghetto, but despite their extensive networks of surveillance and control, they were completely blindsided when the uprising began.  Those who did rise up did so primarily with ingenuity and homemade weapons, but they compensated as best they could for what they lacked in resources with bravery and brilliant planning. They had no resources because they were refugees, living in a walled ghetto.  They had come from all around, forced at gunpoint to leave their homes in other places, before ending up in the walled ghetto, where the occupying power kept them in a half-starved state, not allowing imports of food, medicine, or basic construction materials.

The Attack From Gaza Shouldn’t Come as a Surprise An escalation of events was undoubtedly expected, given Israel’s tightening of restrictions and the rise in assaults across the occupied Palestinian territories during the past few months. For the first time in decades, Israel called the conflict with Palestinians a state of war.    “We are at war,” Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a recorded statement on Saturday, following a military attack on Israel launched by Hamas in the early hours.     But for Palestinians, being at war is an enduring reality that has shaped their daily lives for the past seven decades.

Palestinians Have a Legal Right to Armed Resistance Against Israeli Colonialism International law clearly shows that the Palestinian people have a legal right to armed struggle against Israeli colonialism, just as South Africans did against apartheid. Gaza suffers under an illegal Israeli blockade that even a former British prime minister recognized to be a “prison camp”. Journalist Ben Norton looks over the evidence.

Many of the same crimes against humanity committed by the Nazis in the Holocaust also “prevailed in the so-called New World — from the West Indies to California — where millions of indigenous people died from forced labor, starvation and disease that were a direct consequence of military invasion, enslavement and systematic mass murder,” Stannard noted. — What Columbus Day Really Celebrates: The “Most Massive Act 0f Genocide” on World History

From Karl Marx. Capital Volume One: Chapter Thirty-One: Genesis of the Industrial Capitalist:  The discovery of gold and silver in America, the extirpation, enslavement, and entombment in mines of the aboriginal population, the beginning of the conquest and looting of the East Indies, the turning of Africa into a warren for the commercial hunting of black-skins, signalized the rosy dawn of the era of capitalist production.  … If money … comes into the world with a congenital blood-stain on one cheek, capital comes dripping from head to foot, from every pore, with blood and dirt

Climate Crisis Costing $16m an Hour in Extreme Weather Damage, Study Estimates Analysis shows at least $2.8tn in damage from 2000 to 2019 through worsened storms, floods and heatwave The damage caused by the climate crisis through extreme weather has cost $16m (£13m) an hour for the past 20 years, according to a new estimate. Storms, floods, heatwaves and droughts have taken many lives and destroyed swathes of property in recent decades, with global heating making the events more frequent and intense. The study is the first to calculate a global figure for the increased costs directly attributable to human-caused global heating.

What Columbus Day Really Celebrates: The “Most Massive Act 0f Genocide” on World History Christopher Columbus’ arrival marked the beginning of the genocide of Native Americans, history’s largest genocide. . . . Columbus Day might be a federal holiday in the United States, but it marks the onset of one of the worst crimes in all of human history. In fact, some experts, such as American historian David Stannard, have called Columbus’ arrival the beginning of the largest genocide ever. “The destruction of the Indians of the Americas was, far and away, the most massive act of genocide in the history of the world,” Stannard wrote in his book “American Holocaust: Columbus and the Conquest of the New World.”

Angus Deaton on Inequality: ‘The War on Poverty has Become a War on the Poor’ The Nobel prize winner and author of new book Economics in America argues economists must get back to serving society When Angus Deaton arrived in the US four decades ago, he imagined he had something to say about economic inequality and how to tackle it that Americans might want to hear. Instead, the great economic minds of the time told him to shut up.     The Scottish-born winner of the 2015 Nobel prize for economics struggled at first to understand why there was so little interest in a subject most European economists regarded as a central concern of post-war policies to reduce poverty and build more equitable societies.     But, as Deaton describes in his unsparing new book, Economics in America: An Immigrant Economist Explores the Land of Inequality, he soon realized he had run headlong into the libertarian monetarists of the Chicago School of Economics, and they were driving US policy.

For the Working Class No Recovery! (2009-2023)

Since June 2009 Americans have lived in the false reality of a recovering economy.  Various fake news and manipulated statistics have been used to create this false impression.  However, indicators that really count have not supported the false picture and were ignored. For example, it is normal in a recovering or expanding economy for the labor force participation rate to rise as people enter the workforce to take advantage of the job opportunities.  During the decade of the long recovery, from June 2009 through Sepyr, ber 2023, the labor force participation rate consistently fell from 65.7 to 62.8 percent. —Paul Craig Roberts, The Diminishing American Economy (Updated)

Polycrisis Again! At the beginning of this year, I wrote a post on how the capitalist mode of production was in what some call a ‘polycrisis’, where various crises: economic (inflation and slump); environmental (climate and pandemic); and geopolitical (war and international divisions) had come together in the early 21st century.  Polycrisis, the new buzzword among leftists, is in many ways similar to my own description of the contradictions of the Long Depression of the 2010s that have to come to a head in the 2020s.

  • Let’s start with the climate and global warming.  Global temperatures soared to a new record in September by a huge margin. Scientists at the Copernicus Climate Change Service said 2023 was on course to be the hottest on record, after the average global temperature in September was 1.75C degrees warmer than the pre-industrial period of 1850-1900, before human-induced climate change began to take effect. . . .
  • Then there is poverty and inequality.  At this week’s meeting, the World Bank will present a new report on poverty.  According to the World Bank, global poverty has now receded to levels closer to those prior to the pandemic, but this still means that we have lost three years in the fight against poverty. The recovery is also uneven: while extreme poverty in middle-income countries has decreased, poverty in the poorest countries and countries affected by fragility, conflict or violence is still worse than before the pandemic. . . .
  • And then there is inequality of wealth and incomes.  The latest Credit Suisse report on global personal wealth showed that show that in 2022, 1% of adults (59m) owned 44.5% of all personal wealth in the world, slightly higher than before the pandemic in 2019.  At the other end of the wealth pyramid, the bottom 52.5% of the world’ population (2.8bn) had net wealth of just 1.2%.
  • 4.  Longer term is the growing disruption to economies of the rise of AI.  Goldman Sachs economists reckon that if the new AI technology lived up to its promise (which is in doubt), it would bring “significant disruption” to the labour market, exposing the equivalent of 300m full-time workers across the major economies to automation of their jobs. They calculate that roughly two-thirds of jobs in the US and Europe are exposed to some degree of AI automation, based on data on the tasks typically performed in thousands of occupations.

International Bank Study, Using 150 Years of Data, Shows Mega Banks Like the Big Four in the U.S. Produce Financial Instability and More Severe Crises It took eight years of research to compile a data set of annual balance sheets of more than 11,000 commercial banks dating back to 1870 in 17 advanced economies. And in every country, the study arrived at the same finding: concentrating the banking system in the hands of five or less giant banks leads to financial instability and more severe financial crises. The bank balance sheets of the following countries were examined: Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The 150-year banking study is titled: “Survival of the Biggest: Large Banks and Financial Crises.” Its authors are Matthew Baron of Cornell University; Moritz Schularick of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy and Sciences; and Kaspar Zimmermann of the Leibniz Institute for Financial Research SAFE

Horrific. Unjustified. Morally Wrong. But ‘Unprovoked’?  ‘Nothing about today is “unprovoked”‘  Horrific. Unjustified. Morally wrong. But ‘unprovoked’?     After the Palestinian group Hamas launched the biggest attack on Israel in years–with many killed, hostages taken, and fighting raging–many US elected officials released statements Saturday condemning the “unprovoked” attacks.     But many others took to Twitter Saturday to ask incredulously how Israel’s continued brutal occupation of the Palestinian people cannot be considered a provocation. Nothing about today is “unprovoked!”

  1. 75 years of ethnic cleansing
  2. 15 years of blockade
  3. Confiscation of Palestinian lands
  4. Pogroms on Palestinian towns
