Quotes of the Day:

The press is so powerful in its image-making role, it can make a criminal look like he’s the victim and make the victim look like he’s the criminal. This is the press, an irresponsible press. If you aren’t careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressedand loving the people who are doing the oppressing. — Malcolm X, Audubon Ballroom, December 13, 1964

As the Biden administration releases funding to remediate communities where homes were once sacrificed to make room for highways, the case of Sandridge shows how the impacts of new road developments are still disproportionately falling on Black communities.     Using highways to divide Black communities has a long history in the United States. Take virtually any city in the country and overlay demographic data over highways, and you can see that the largest burden of construction falls on African American communities, according to Julian Agyeman, a critical urban planner and professor at Tufts University.“These highways were not accidents,” he said. “Urban planning is the spatial toolkit of racial segregation.” — Why s South Carolina Still Building Roads On Top of Black Communities?

Tina Cordova, whose hometown of Tularosa lies just 45 miles from ground zero, remembers her grandmother’s stories about wiping that infernal dust off every nook and cranny of her childhood home. No one knew what had happened quite yet, but they figured it must have been something special. After all, a local paper reported that the explosion was so bright that a blind woman had actually seen it. — Oppenheimer Ignores the First Victims of the Nuclear Era The movie repeats the myth that the New Mexico bomb site was in a desolate area with “nothing for 40 miles in either direction.”

COVID-19: The Media Monopoly Lied About Its Origns!

US Capitalism Ignores Its’ Own Science!: Factory Farms Cause Pandemics! End Factory Farms! Primary Pandemic Prevention Abstract: Over the last few decades, hundreds of human pathogens have emerged at a rate unprecedented in human history. Emerged from where? Mostly from animals. The AIDS virus is blamed on the butchering of primates in the African bushmeat trade, we created mad cow disease when we turned cows into carnivores and cannibals, and SARS and COVID-19 have been traced back to the exotic wild animal trade. Our last pandemic, swine flu in 2009, arose not from some backwater wet market in Asia, however. It was largely made-in-the-USA on pig production operations in the United States. In this new Age of Emerging Diseases, there are now billions of animals overcrowded and intensively confined in filthy factory farms for viruses to incubate and mutate within. Today’s industrial farming practices have given viruses billions more spins at pandemic roulette. How can we stop the emergence of pandemic viruses in the first place? Whenever possible, treat the cause. The largest and oldest association of public health professionals in the world, the American Public Health Association, has called for a moratorium on factory farming for nearly two decades. Indeed, factory farms are a public health menace. In addition to discontinuing the intensive confinement practices of animal agriculture, we should continue to research, develop, and invest in innovative plant-based and cultivated meat technologies to move away from raising billions of feathered and curly-tailed test tubes for viruses with pandemic potential to mutate within.

Harvard Report: US Meat Supply Could Start the Next Global Pandemic “At every turn marginalized communities are at increased risk,” an animal law expert told Truthout. Anew report from Harvard Law School and New York University argues that the next global pandemic could originate from the U.S. meat supply.     “Covid has infected more than 100 million Americans and killed over a million of them. But the next pandemic may be far worse and might happen sooner than we think,” Ann Linder, one of the report’s lead authors, said in a statement. “The stakes are simply too high for the problem to be ignored.”     In the past decade, many diseases — including HIV/AIDS, Ebola, Zika, and COVID-19 — have originated from animals. Corporate media and right-wing lawmakers have frequently alleged, without evidence, that these zoonotic diseases are due to supposedly poor hygiene or unsafe cultural practices in the Global South, claims that are based on anti-Asian or anti-African stereotypes. But despite this racist discourse, zoonotic diseases are actually as likely — if not more likely — to spring from commercial factory farms in the U.S., where millions of animals are pushed into close contact with each other with very little government regulation.

Cancer Alley: Insurance for Residents/Victims Vanishing— But Not the Polluters: Property Insurance Disappears for Louisianans – But Not for Gas Facilities Oil and gas facilities along the Gulf coast have long been a major market for speciality insurance carriers Residents of coastal Louisiana are facing growing risks from flooding and extreme weather, with options for home insurance vanishing as insurers leave the state. But the fossil fuel industry operating nearby has no such worries.      Liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals have been springing up along the fragile Gulf coast, securing insurance even as their product contributes to the climate crisis and its growing risks, including more intense hurricanes and increased coastal flooding that are driving away residents.s

Lawsuit Says US Environmental Agency Ignores Harm of Biofuel Production New suit charges that the EPA disregards ethanol production’s impact on endangered species as it is directed to study under law The US biofuel program is probably killing endangered species and harming the environment in a way that negates its benefits, but the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is largely ignoring those problems, a new federal lawsuit charges.  The suit alleges the EPA failed to consider impacts on endangered species, as is required by law, when it set new rules that will expand biofuel use nationwide during the next three years, said Brett Hartl, government affairs director with the Center for Biological Diversity (CBD), which brought the litigation.

United States:

The United States is not a Democracy (A government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly)! Only the 1%, through their ownership of the Republicrats and who profit from war and the war budget, vote for War and the war budget — A policy, which Gore Vidal called a  Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace. — The 99% Should Decide On War — Not Just The 1% Who Profit From War!  Under a Democracy, The 99% would have the right to vote on the policy of Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace! The United States takes from the poor and gives to the Rich. Tax the Rich!  — They Can Afford To Pay! Both Parties Support U.S. Capitalism’s Wars! (The Only War the Democrats Opposed was the Civil War!)

Sanders Says He Opposes $886 Billion in Military Spending Amid Healthcare and Climate Crises “As a nation, the time is long overdue for fundamental changes to our national priorities. Cutting military spending is a good first step.     Sen. Bernie Sanders announced Monday that he intends to vote against legislation authorizing $886 billion in military spending for the coming fiscal year, arguing the Pentagon budget should be cut in favor of investments in healthcare, education, housing, climate action, and other priorities.      “As a nation, the time is long overdue for fundamental changes to our national priorities,” Sanders (I-Vt.) wrote in an op-ed for The Guardian. “Cutting military spending is a good first step.”

As Book Bans Sweep the US, Incarcerated People Face the Worst Censorship The freedom to read for everyone requires an end to prisons. Organized pro-censorship activism has produced double-digit increases in documented censorship attempts in public and school libraries, prompted state and federal legislation aimed at restricting the right to read, and animated the presidential campaign as Ron DeSantis runs on the issue while Joe Biden looks to coordinate a federal response against book bans by naming a “book ban” czar. For anti-carceral activists and librarians working in prisons and jails, efforts by the state to limit access to information are old news.

Norfolk Southern Wants to Buy the Only Municipally Owned Railroad in the US. Voters Can Stop It. “The citizens of Cincinnati would be wise to hold onto their railroad infrastructure as their forefathers understood the perils of private rail ownership. They would not be well served by this sale.”     The company responsible for the toxic train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, is on the verge of buying up the only municipally owned interstate railroad in the United State.

American Anthropological Association Endorses Academic Boycott of Israeli ‘Apartheid Regime’ “The discipline of anthropology, as the study of humanity, bears a distinct and urgent responsibility to stand against all forms of racism and racist practices,” the AAA said in response to the BDS movement’s boycott call.

Los Angeles Set To End Most Pre-trial Detention The move comes amid a nation-wide push to end cash bail. On July 18, Los Angeles County announced a plan to drastically reduce its reliance on cash bail. Effective October 1, the majority of people arrested for misdemeanors and nonviolent felonies will no longer be required to post bail in order to be released from county jail while they await arraignment. The new bail schedule determines eligibility for pre-trial release based on perceived risk to the public.     The LA County jail system is the largest in the world. There are currently around 14,000 people in the county’s nine facilities; more than half are awaiting trial.

 Labor:

A Catastrophic Flood on California’s Central Coast Has Plunged Already Marginalized Indigenous Farmworkers Into Crisis Cascading climate disasters and unjust labor and immigration policies leave undocumented farm laborers without a safety net.     . . .“The water is coming!”      Vasquez and his wife, undocumented Indigenous Mexican immigrants who speak Mixteco, understood just enough Spanish to bolt out of bed, grab their two young children and race to their car. They headed south out of town, wondering why water was threatening their rental in Pajaro, an impoverished, unincorporated farmworker community, about 95 miles south of San Francisco, that helps power Monterey County’s $4 billion agriculture industry.      Vasquez, who asked not to use his real name for fear of retaliation, did not learn until the next morning that the storm-swollen Pajaro River—which forms the border between Monterey and Santa Cruz County to the north—had demolished a section of the levee on its long-neglected southern side. The levee’s deficiency was clear soon after it was built in 1949. It failed twice in the fifties, prompting Congress to authorize millions to fix it, then again several times in the 1990s, when a catastrophic flood killed two.      The poorly maintained levee proved no match for a waterway transformed by winter’s relentless succession of monsoon-like atmospheric rivers

Economy:

Trillions of Dollars in Uninsured Deposits Are Now a Serious Albatross Around the Necks of the Mega Banks on Wall Street In June, Reuters reported that JPMorgan Chase was expanding the reach of its commercial bank into two additional foreign countries – Israel and Singapore – bringing its foreign commercial bank presence to a total of 28 countries. Those plans could potentially add billions of dollars more to its already problematic uninsured deposits.    Why federal regulators are allowing JPMorgan Chase to continue to expand, despite it admitting to five criminal felony counts since 2014 and currently facing three lawsuits in federal court for facilitating Jeffrey Epstein’s sex trafficking of underage girls is drawing attention from watchdogs.

Spain Elections: ‘Progressive Bloc’ Resists Onslaught of the Right, But Receives a Final Warning The Spanish early elections of 23 July produced unexpected results. The right wing PP and far-right VOX failed to get the overall majority which opinions predicted. A last minute mobilisation of the left vote to prevent the entry of the far right in the government for the first time meant the vote for the social-democratic PSOE held up better than anticipated, leading to a hung parliament. The formation of a new government will be complicated and might even lead to repeat elections, just at a time when the Spanish ruling class needs a strong government to face the oncoming recession. The article by the Spanish comrades of Lucha de Clases analyses the reasons for this scenario.

Health. Welfare, and Education:

The government of the United States can pass laws in a few days to spend tens of trillions of dollars for war and the bailout of Wall Street and the bankers. Yet, those who, pass universal healthcare for themselves, but cannot spend even one trillion dollars for universal health for those who are ‘governed’! This is what is considered, by the powers to be,  a democracy and part of the democratic way. — Roland Sheppard, Let the People  Vote on Healthcare
