An apparent cluster of childhood cancers near a nuclear power station on the river Severn has been blamed on radiation from the plant. Chris Busby, a scientist, said he had uncovered evidence of significant levels of leukemia among children under four years old living near the aging Oldbury reactor. He believed cancer statistics for an area in and around nearby Chepstow, south Wales, between 1974 and 1990 revealed excessive numbers of myeloid leukemia, a condition usually linked to older people, and sometimes involving exposure to radiation. Three cases were recorded when there might have been expected either one or none. In all there had been seven cancers among under fours, one and a half times the national average. This mirrored a previously accepted leukemia cluster at Seascale, near the Sellafield nuclear plant in Cumbria, where there were four deaths of children under 14 from 1950 to 1983. Dr. Busby, a member of the campaign group Green Audit, and adviser to the European parliament’s green group, said: “This is the discovery of a new nuclear site child leukemia cluster. The high level of myeloid leukemia suggests that radiation is the cause.” He believed older people living downstream from Oldbury were also more likely to suffer cancers. Defenders of the nuclear industry accept the existence of clusters but point out these also occur in areas where there are no plants. “British Nuclear Fuels said no one knew the cause of the Seascale cluster, but Dr. Busby’s work was never peer reviewed, and if his previous work was anything to go by, the study could be discounted. — Cancers Blamed on Nuclear Power Plant

Biden/Obama Execuive War: US Bombs Syria Two Weeks After House Vote Against Withdrawing Troops “We are at war in Syria, but American lawmakers haven’t debated it and the public barely knows,” said one foreign policy writer. The U.S. launched airstrikes in Syria on Thursday after one American contractor was killed and five service members were injured in an attack by a drone that the Pentagon claims was of “Iranian origin.” The drone attack on a maintenance facility in northeast Syria and the U.S. response came two weeks after the House of Representatives voted down a bipartisan resolution that would have required President Joe Biden to withdraw all American troops from Syria within 180 days.

The operator of a Minnesota nuclear power plant said the facility would be taken offline Friday to repair a new leak near the Mississippi River, an announcement that came a week after the company and state officials belatedly acknowledged a separate leak that occurred in November. Xcel Energy insisted in a statement Thursday that the leak at its Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant poses “no risk to the public or the environment,” but a team of federal regulators is monitoring the groundwater in the area amid concerns that radioactive materials—specifically tritium—could wind up in drinking water

The Silent Return of Segregation: UCLA Study Ginds Schools Across the Country are Becoming Increasingly Segregated American public schools are increasingly segregated along the lines of race and income, a study found. A report from the Civil Rights Project at UCLA and the Center for Education and Civil Rights at the Pennsylvania State University, which was published in May, found racial and economic segregation is intensifying and spreading among American public schools due to demographic changes and a stall in desegregation regulations. The report examined segregation in American schools in observance of the 65th anniversary of the Brown vs. Board of Education Supreme Court decision, which deemed racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional.

Behind all the law enforcement mumbo-jumbo is a commitment to racist broken-windows policing. . . .The Rutgers Center for Security, Race and Rights’ (CSRR) recent report Shining a Light on New Jersey’s Secret Intelligence System shows how the ROIC wastes limited state resources doubling down on “broken windows policing” – a method consistently rebuked by legal and criminal justice scholars as a tool of mass incarceration. Broken windows models emphasize aggressive enforcement of misdemeanor and non-violent “quality of life” offenses. ROIC intelligence gathering focuses on these methods, as the example of the City of Camden attests. There, ROIC intelligence has given rise to open season on privacy and petty offenses, with police issuing fines for offenses like riding a bicycle without a bell. Invariably, such tactics overwhelmingly target minority communities. Rather than fight terrorism, ROIC intelligence furthers the overreach of the carceral state with little benefit.
‘Less Lethal’?: Militarization Of Police ‘Ramped Up’ After 9/11, ‘Rise Of The Warrior Cop’ Author Says: Police Use “Less Lethal” Weapons to Crush Social Movements Across the World A new report finds that more than 121,000 people globally were injured or killed by crowd-control weapons since 2015. This week, the City of Philadelphia agreed to a $9.25 million settlement with protesters who were brutalized with tear gas and pepper spray during demonstrations following the murder of George Floyd in late May 2020. Such accountability for police who crush protests with crowd-control weapons is rare both in the United States and across the world. The settlement comes as researchers report that police in dozens of countries have routinely injured and even killed demonstrators with crowd-control weapons since 2015 as governments cracked down on protests.

Credit Suisse Collapse: The Whole System is Broken – Expropriate the Banks! The takeover of Credit Suisse (CS) by UBS exposes the massive instability of the global financial market. It is an expression of the rottenness of the world capitalist system. As always, while the bankers gamble away, the working class has to pay. The bankruptcy of CS would probably have led directly into the global financial and eventually economic crisis. Federal Councillor Keller-Sutter refers to the UBS takeover as a “commercial solution”. With the use of an emergency law and state guarantees of 209 billion francs, this is tantamount to a bald-faced lie. The state, which according to the liberal myth “should not intervene in the economy”, had to rescue by decree the capitalists from themselves – for the second time in 15 years!
Powell and Yellen Say the Banking System Is Sound as Another Global Bank Teeters The reassurances of Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell and U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen that the U.S. banking system is sound, stand in sharp contrast to what is happening in markets. This week, the shorts have found another easy new global bank target to try to take down after making a bundle of money betting against Credit Suisse, which was taken over for 82 cents a share on Sunday by its Swiss competitor, UBS.This time the global banking target is Deutsche Bank, a global behemoth we have warned about ad nauseum here at Wall Street On Parade. Deutsche Bank was a $120 dollar stock prior to the financial crisis in 2008. It closed yesterday at $9.65 in New York and is down another 10 percent in early morning trading in Europe.

500,000 Rally in Support of Mexican President and Against US Intervention Protesters heeded the Mexican president’s call to defend the nation’s sovereignty following attacks by U.S. politicians. Ricardo Valdez Ponce left his house late Friday night in his hometown of Matamoros, Tamaulipas to board a bus for the 15-hour journey to Mexico City in order to take part, the next day, in the mass demonstration called by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, known widely as “AMLO,” in defense of Mexican national sovereignty. “I do it with great pleasure because we’ve never had a president like the one we have now. I am very proud and motivated to be here accompanying our president,” said Valdez. Valdez was one of an estimated 500,000 people who heeded López Obrador’s call to fill the Zócalo, the giant square at the heart of the Mexican capital, to defend Mexican national sovereignty in the face of recent attacks.
