Capitalism Is to Blame for How Quickly US COVID Deaths Reached 1 Million The idea of obeying science when it might cost multibillion-dollar corporations their market share was heresy. With solemn tone and a truly daunting dot-matrix map of the lost, The New York Times put forth the question that nobody seems prepared to deal with at this juncture: How did this country suffer 1 million COVID deaths, the most of any country in the world, in less than three years?
Our Immigration Police State As I have long argued, a system of immigration controls necessarily comes with an immigration police state. Warrantless searches of farms and ranches near the border. Domestic highway checkpoints. Roving Border Patrol checkpoints. Immigration raids on private businesses. Felonies for hiring illegal immigrants. Felonies for transporting illegal immigrants. Boarding of Greyhound buses to check people’s papers. Forced deportations. Forced separation of children from parents. And on and on.
Rising Authoritarianism and Escalating Climate Change Are Supported by the Same Industries The biggest obstacles, a recent U.N. climate report noted, are national leaders who are unwilling to regulate fossil fuel corporations, reduce greenhouse gas emissions or plan for renewable energy production. Today, it’s easy to find political leaders—on both the political right and left—working on behalf of corporations in energy, finance, agribusiness, technology, military and pharmaceutical sectors, and not always in the public interest.

Massive Kootenai National Forest Timber Sale Challenged by Conservation Groups Conservation groups sued the U.S. Forest Service today to stop a large timber sale in the Kootenai National Forest that threatens a small and imperiled population of grizzly bears near the Montana-Canada border. The groups notified the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service of their intent to sue it, as well. The Knotty Pine Project authorizes the logging of more than 5,000 acres with massive clearcuts — at least one the size of 170 football fields — and allows for more than 45 miles of roads to be constructed or rebuilt in crucial grizzly bear habitat. In approving the timber sale, the Forest Service failed to disclose the damaging impacts of logging and. ew roads on the struggling and isolated grizzly bear population.
Earth’s Atmospheric CO2 Hasn’t Been This High In Millions of Years “Either we drive the fossil fuel industry into extinction—or the human race.” Climate scientists and concerned citizens are sounding the alarm as daily, weekly, and monthly records for atmospheric carbon dioxide levels continue to be shattered while the fossil fuel-powered capitalist economic system responsible for skyrocketing greenhouse gas pollution plows ahead.

Racist Attack in Buffalo Was Crafted to Terrorize Us. Here’s How We Fight Back. We must counter racist attacks with a diversity of tactics from community protection to deradicalizing white Americans. n attacking Black residents at the grocery store, Gendron explicitly sought to terrorize all Black folks with the hopes of rallying other likeminded white Americans to the cause. While law enforcement often kills Black people suspected for minor infractions, if any at all, the white murderer survived his encounter with responding police officers. While I do not condone police violence, law enforcement’s ability to apprehend mass murderers like Dylann Roof rubbed salt into a collective emotional and psychic wound inflicted by Gendron. Gendron’s release of his 180-page racist manifesto explaining his motivation for his racist attack added to the burn.

Michael Roberts Blog : Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has turbocharged existing food insecurity. Ukraine and Russia account for over one-tenth of all calories traded globally. They produce 30 per cent of world wheat exports as well as 60 per cent of its sunflower oil. At least 26 countries rely on Russia and/or Ukraine for more than half of their grains. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, the war will leave 20-30 per cent of Ukraine’s farmland unplanted or unharvested for the 2022 season. Food prices have exploded, up almost 30 per cent on the year in April, according to the FAO food price index. It is a crisis felt most acutely in the developing world. Food purchases account for at least half of total household expenditures in low income countries, and many emerging market governments provide food subsidies. These are getting harder to maintain, as rising borrowing costs limit fiscal space and food prices soar. According to the World Bank, 10mn people are pushed into extreme poverty worldwide for every percentage point increase in food prices Fred Global Price of Food Index
Jerome Powell’s Fed in Two Frightening Charts The March 15-16 minutes of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) of the Federal Reserve show that there was agreement, given “elevated inflation and tight labor market conditions,” that the Fed needed to take decisive action to shrink its balance sheet, with FOMC participants reaffirming “that the Federal Reserve’s securities holdings should be reduced over time in a predictable manner primarily by adjusting the amounts reinvested of principal payments….” But Jerome Powell’s Fed did not actually announce a specific plan to shrink its balance sheet until May 4 and stated at that time that the plan would not go into effect until June 1 – almost three months after the FOMC indicated that the Fed should take decisive action. As a result of this stalling, the Fed’s balance sheet has remained at the $9 trillion level since its March 15-16 FOMC meeting, as inflation has continued to soar.

Argentina: After the Resounding Success of the Federal March, What Next? On 12 May, the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC) reported that inflation in April was 6%, pushing annualised inflation up to 58%, its highest level in thirty years. On the same day, hundreds of thousands of protesters arrived in Buenos Aires from all over the country, filling the Plaza de Mayo to participate in the Federal March organised by the unemployed workers’ organisation, Unidad Piquetera. Kremlin Spokesman Says Russia Now Considers US, European Allies “Hostile States” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Tuesday that Moscow now considers the United States and its European allies “hostile states” as Western governments continue to pour heavy weaponry into Ukraine, which is attempting to beat back Russia’s deadly invasion. The West has also put in place an unprecedented regime of sanctions with the goal of hampering Russia’s economy and undermining the country’s war machine. During an event in Moscow on Tuesday, Peskov characterized the ongoing conflict as “a diplomatic war and a political war” between Russia and the Western nations backing Ukraine with economic and military support as well as intelligence.

Education, Health, and Welfare:
The government of the United States can pass laws in a few days to spend tens of trillions of dollars for war and the bailout of Wall Street and the bankers. Yet, those who pass universal healthcare for themselves, but they cannot spend even one trillion dollars for universal health for those who are ‘governed’! This is what is considered, by the powers to be, a democracy and part of the democratic way. — Roland Sheppard, Let the People Vote on Heslthcare!
