Quotes of the Day:
So while much of the pioneering work on mRNA vaccines was done with government money, the privately owned drugmakers will walk away with big profits, while governments pay for vaccines they helped to fund the development of in the first place! The lesson of the coronavirus vaccine response is that a few billion dollars a year spent on additional basic research could prevent a thousand times as much loss in death, illness and economic destruction. At a news conference US health adviser, Anthony Fauci, highlighted the spike protein work. “We shouldn’t underestimate the value of basic biology research,” Fauci said. Exactly. But as many authors, such as Mariana Mazzacuto have shown, state funding and research has been vital to development of such products. What better lesson can we learn from the COVID vaccine experience than that the multi-national pharma companies should be publicly owned so that research and development can be directed to meet the health and medical needs of people not the profits of these companies. And moreover, then the necessary vaccines can get to the billions in the poorest countries and circumstances rather than to just those countries and people who can afford to pay the prices set by these companies. — COVID Vaccines: Calling the Shots
But rather than moving things forward, this has been more often than not a frustrating exercise, with negotiations only watering down language to prevent real progress on access. U.S. negotiators in particular have routinely weakened efforts at the World Health Assembly, the WHO’s decision-making body, by supporting voluntary commitments but not enforcement mechanisms. The third and perhaps most worrying part of the statement may appear the most benign. The Biden administration says that the “negotiations will take time.” How much? The U.S. doesn’t say, despite the clear urgency of the situation. Another troubling element is the reference to the “consensus-based nature of the institution. “This is a clear message to those countries dared to hope the decision would be decided by a vote, at the WHO or elsewhere. This is not the first time that the U.S. has used the concept of “consensus” to basically give itself a veto. The final sour note is the message to industry: “The Administration will continue to ramp up its efforts — working with the private sector.” This is a strange thing to say regarding an intergovernmental negotiation that are supposed to be intended to serve the public interest, rather than the final interests of private companies. Is this the administration’s way of saying it intends to be the mouthpiece of big business? We hope not. That would not be historic. It would be tragic. — What’s Wrong With Biden’s Promise to Waive Vaccine Patents

Barry Sheppard: New Frontal Attack on Abortion The “leak” of the draft decision by Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito to overturn Roe vs Wade, the 1973 Court Decision legalizing women’s right to abortion, signals that the Court’s reactionary wing will probably do so in its final decision. The May 4 New York Times front page headline read “Draft Abortion Ruling Signals Seismic Political Shift.” Previous Court decisions have upheld state regulations (with bipartisan support) that have chipped away at this right in the decades since 1973. This Court has already upheld recent state laws overturning Roe in fact. It is such a law passed by the Mississippi state legislature that is now before the Court, which Alioto’s draft decision.
Jesse Jackscon: Women Set to Experience a Degree of Dred Scott In 1857 the Supreme Court decided Dred Scott, a decision that said African Americans were not citizens and therefore had no rights that a white person must respect. Last night, for the first time in history that anyone can recall, a leaked preliminary Supreme Court decision with respect to completely overturning the 50-year-old precedent of choice for women in Roe v. Wade, if not changed before being issued, will take affect in about two months. Similar to Dred Scott it will say, in essence, women have no rights that a man or the law must respect. It will make no difference if you are the victim of rape or incest you will be forced to give birth. There is even a question among some in the so-called pro-life movement as to even whether the life of the mother should be spared if death is a possibility to save the life of the child. Americans expect to add human rights, not have them taken way. This is really an attack on the human rights of women period!
Century-Old Racist US Supreme Court Cases Still Rule Over Millions of Americans The 4 million inhabitants of five U.S. territories – Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Northern Marianas Islands, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands – do not have the full protection of the Constitution, because of a series of Supreme Court cases dating back to 1901 that are based on archaic, often racist language and reasoning. A call from Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch to overturn more than a century of precedent has been joined by advocates for equal citizenship for everyone born in those U.S. territories. If the court decides to take up the question, it would review a long-standing status quo
Of Barbarians, Breeders, and the Men of the New Old Order The Democrats in Washington—somebody—should be demanding that the courts be taken back from the antidemocratic minority. . . Many people are repeating the line used by then-Sen. Kamala Harris in Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing for the Supreme Court. “Can you think of any laws that give the government the power to make decisions about the male body?” she asked. “I’m not thinking of any right now, Senator,” Kavanaugh replied.
The ’Lesser Evil” Democrat Majority: Supports Welfare to the 1% , But It Enables Child Poverty!: Sanders Blasts Senate’s ‘Strange Priorities’ as It Advances Corporate Welfare “We can’t extend the child tax credit to combat child poverty,” said the Vermont senator. “But somehow, we can provide a massive amount of corporate welfare to a handful of corporations.” Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont blasted the warped priorities of the U.S. Senate on Wednesday as the Democratic-controlled chamber moved to advance legislation that he warned would provide a $53 billion “blank check” to the profitable microchip industry under the guise of promoting innovation, domestic manufacturing, and job creation. “We have strange priorities here in the Senate,” Sanders, the chair of the Senate Budget Committee, said in floor remarks. “We can’t extend the child tax credit to combat child poverty. We can’t deal with the crisis in child care. We can’t provide dental care to seniors on Medicare. We can’t deal with climate change.” “But somehow,” the senator added, “we can provide a massive amount of corporate welfare to a handful of corporations.” Sanders’ comments came as the Senate began holding votes on dozens of motions related to the COMPETES Act, which is currently in conference committee as the House and Senate reconcile their differences on the legislation before final passage. The motions are aimed at instructing the conferees’ work on the bill.

The United States of Crumbling Infrstructure: Chicago Launches ‘Delicious’ Canned Water Brand – Just Don’t Mention the City’s Toxic Water Crisis Launch of Chicagwa met with criticism that the city hasn’t done enough to help thousands of residents drinking lake water through lead pipes On Tuesday, the city’s mayor unveiled the artfully designed cans of Chicago tap water to celebrate their water source, Lake Michigan, in honor of National Drinking Water Week. But the city has been identified as having more potentially toxic lead pipes delivering that water to homes than anywhere else in the US – a fact that concerned locals are now reminding people about.
How the Oil And Gas Industry is Trying to Hold US Public Schools Hostage The oil and gas industry wants to play a word-and-picture association game with you. Think of four images: a brightly colored backpack stuffed with pencils, a smiling teacher with a tablet tucked under her arm, a pair of glasses resting on a stack of pastel notebooks, and a gleaming school bus welcoming a young student onboard. “What do all of these have in common?” a 6 April Facebook post by the New Mexico Oil and Gas Association (NMOGA), asked. “They are powered by oil and natural gas!” Here in New Mexico – the fastest-warming and most water-stressed state in the continental US, where wildfires have recently devoured over 120,000 acres and remain uncontained – the oil and gas industry is coming out in force to deepen the region’s dependence on fossil fuels. Their latest tactic: to position oil and gas as a patron saint of education. Powerful interest groups have deployed a months-long campaign to depict schools and children’s wellbeing as under threat if government officials infringe upon fossil fuel production.

Powell Says Fed Doesn’t Have a Credibility Problem with the American People – Despite Gallup Poll Showing Lowest Confidence Since 2008 Financial Crisis At the Fed’s press conference yesterday, Federal Reserve Chair Pro Tempore Jerome Powell was asked by Mike McKee of Bloomberg Television a series of questions on monetary policy which ended with this: “Are you concerned about Fed credibility with the American people?” Powell answered the monetary policy questions but did not directly address the credibility issue. McKee then repeated the question, phrased as follows: “Do you think the Fed has a credibility problem?” Powell’s answer provides an alarming insight into with whom the Fed seeks to maintain confidence. Powell said this: Powell: No. I don’t. A good example of why would be that—so in the fourth quarter of last year, as we started talking about tapering sooner and then raising rates this year, you saw financial markets reacting, you know, very appropriately. Not to bless any particular day’s measure, but the way financial markets—you know, the forward rate curve has tightened in response to our guidance and our actions really amplifies our policy. I mean, it’s—monetary policy is working through expectations now to a very large extent. We’ve only done two rate increases, but if you look at—if you look at financial conditions, the two year [U.S. Treasury note] has—the two year is at 280 now [2.80 percent]. In September, I think it was at 20 basis points. And that’s all through the economy. People are feeling those higher rates already. And so that is—that shows that the markets think that our forward guidance is credible. And I think that’s—we want to keep it that way.”

The government of the United States can pass laws in a few days to spend tens of trillions of dollars for war and the bailout of Wall Street and the bankers. Yet, those who pass universal healthcare for themselves, but they cannot spend even one trillion dollars for universal health for those who are ‘governed’! This is what is considered, by the powers to be, a democracy and part of the democratic way. — Roland Sheppard, Let the People Vote on Healthcare!
Caoitaliism Let’s The World go Hungry!:
Hunger Is A Racial Equity Issue Throughout History, people of color in the United States have experienced discrimination and maltreatment when it comes to education, employment, housing, healthcare, and mass incarceration, among others. It is through these and other systems that structural racism is maintained as a result of historical actions that continue to be felt today. Because of this, these marginalized communities have dealt with poverty and food insecurity at a much higher rate than white people. In fact, Black people are two times more likely to experience poverty than the overall population of the United States, and the percentage only increases for women of color.
From The CEO’s Desk: The State of Global Hunger On World Food Day Throughout this week every year, participants in over 150 countries celebrate and advocate for food security on World Food Day. One of the most important global holidays each year, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations refreshed the theme for this year: “Grow, Nourish, Sustain. Together.” While every year is challenging for those living in hunger and poverty, the tragedies of 2020 made this year the most important for the hunger crisis in recent history. At the beginning of the year, 820 million people worldwide were affected by hunger. That’s 1 in 9 people. The United Nations estimates that COVID-19 will double the number of people facing acute hunger worldwide. Now is the time to drive action and attention toward both food security and nutrition security.
- According to the USDA, more than 38 million people, including 12 million children, in the United States are food insecure.
- The pandemic has increased food insecurity among families with children and communities of color, who already faced hunger at much higher rates before the pandemic.
- Every community in the country is home to families who face hunger. But rural communities are especially hard hit by hunger.
- Many households that experience food insecurity do not qualify for federal nutrition programs and visit their local food banks and other food programs for extra support.
- Hunger in African American, Latino, and Native American communities is higher because of systemic racial injustice. To achieve a hunger-free America, we must address the root causes of hunger and structural and systemic inequities.
