Quotes of the Day:

Although a pair of U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) initiatives—the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) and the Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP)—have helped some farmers adopt more sustainable methods, IATP showed last year that just 42% of CSP applicants and 31% of EQIP applicants were awarded contracts from 2010 to 2020. IATP’s new report scrutinizes the implementation of EQIP throughout 12 Midwestern states in 2020. Using state-level USDA data, IATP analyzed the number of contracts awarded, the amount of funding allocated, and the types of practices supported by EQIP in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, and North Dakota.     It found that while thousands of farmers are being denied access to federal resources that could help them minimize their negative ecological impacts and improve their economic prospects, EQIP funneled more than $56 million toward industrial agricultural practices that worsened the quality of the land, air, and water in just a dozen states in 2020 alone. — USDA Conservation Program Must Be Reformed to Stop Funding Pollution, Report Shows

 United States:

The United States is not a Democracy (A government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly)! Only the 1%, through their ownership of the Reublicrats and who profit from war and the war budget, vote for War and the war budget — A policy, which Gore Vidal called a  Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace. — The 99% Should Decide On War — Not Just The 1% Who Profit From War!  Under a Democracy, The 99% would have the right to vote on the policy of Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace! The United States takes from th poor and gives to the Rich. Taxthe Rich!  — They Can Afford to Pay!

Hunger and Homelessness Many people conflate hunger and homelessness. Although the issues are closely related, there are several important distinctions we need to be aware of. For starters, a person does not have to be experiencing homeless to be hungry.  More than 42 million Americans are food insecure, meaning they don’t have access to an adequate supply of nutritious, affordable food.  According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, over 580,000 Americans experienced homelessness on a single night in 2020. Hunger often precedes homelessness because people who are forced to decide between paying for housing or groceries will, more often than not, choose the former.      Both hunger and homelessness often have distinct causes and can have disparate impacts on different segments of the population. Let’s look at the facts!

Hunger Facts

Causes

  • Poverty – In 2020 over 37 million people lived in poverty. According to Feeding America, 72% of the householdsserved by its affiliated food banks live at or below 100% of the federal poverty line. While unemployment is certainly a significant factor, nearly 60 percent of food-insecure U.S. households have at least one working family member. 72% of the households the Feeding America network serves live at or below the federal poverty level with a median annual household income of $9,175.
  • Income Inequality –  An estimated 40 percent of the total U.S. population(140 million people) are either poor or low-income. By almost any measure, income inequality has increased exponentially over the past 30+ years. Since 1980, most of the growth in wages has been concentrated among top earners, while wages for the average worker have stagnated.
  • Lack of Affordable Housing – There is not one state or county in the United States where a minimum wage, full-time worker can afford a two-bedroom apartment.
  • Food Deserts– Food Deserts are areas or neighborhoods where residents do not have access to a grocery store that provides the wholesome and nutritious foods that are necessary for a healthy diet.

Chris Hedges:American Commissars Social media platforms are aggressively censoring all who challenge the dominant narrative on Ukraine, the ruling Democratic Party, the wars in the Middle East and the corporate state.  The ruling class, made up of the traditional elites that run the Republican Party and the Democratic Party, is employing draconian forms of censorship on its right-wing and left-wing critics in a desperate effort to cling to power. The traditional elites were discredited for pushing through a series of corporate assaults on workers, from deindustrialization to trade deals. They were unable to stem rising inflation, the looming economic crisis and the ecological emergency. They were incapable of carrying out significant social and political reform to ameliorate widespread suffering and refused to accept responsibility for two decades of military fiascos in the Middle East. And now they have launched a new and sophisticated McCarthyism. Character assassination. Algorithms. Shadow banning. De-platforming.

Environment —Ecosocialism or Ecocide!:

USDA Conservation Program Must Be Reformed to Stop Funding Pollution, Report Shows “The more money that goes toward harmful, industrial practices, the less that goes toward good conservation,” said a researcher from the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy. Family farmers and rural communities are disappearing in Iowa and across rural America. Farmers are told that biofuels programs will help them, but biofuels entrench pro-agribusiness farm policy and encourage environmentally and economically destructive overproduction.

Economy:

The IMF/World Bank spring meetings start this week and IMF chief Georgieva set a pessimistic tone for the world economy. “To safeguard global economic recovery and build resilience, the immediate priorities are to end the war in Ukraine, confront the pandemic, and tackle inflation and debt”      “The outlook has deteriorated substantially since the IMF released its previous projections in January, largely because of the war and its repercussions.     “We know from global experience that conflict is the enemy of development and prosperity, the high cost of war has crippled and continues to cripple so many countries.”     Georgieva said the IMF will be projecting a further downgrade in global growth for both 2022 and 2023, with the war contributing to forecast downgrades for 143 economies this year—accounting for 86 percent of global gross domestic product. World:

Mass demonstrations spread worldwide as food, gas costs spiral Two years into a pandemic that has killed 20 million people and still rages on, social anger that has been building up around dinner tables and on shopfloors across the world is now boiling over into the streets.

Sri Lanka: For a General Strike! The most spectacular struggle of the Sri Lankan people since the 1953 Hartal is presently unfolding. The power of this struggle has forced the resignation of the cabinet. The government’s allies had declared their ‘independence’ in parliament. Meanwhile, Cabraal, the governor of the central bank, has resigned. Those groups whose “opposition” has consisted only of day-dreaming about taking the next presidency, first tried to delegitimise the struggle by raising such questions as, “Who will take the leadership? Who will take responsibility?” etc. But the strength of the movement is such that they too have had to now join the movement. Now they even appeal to the protesters not to stop!

Health, Education. and Wealfare:

The government of the United States can pass laws in a few days to spend tens of trillions of dollars for war and the bailout of Wall Street and the bankers. Yet, those who pass universal healthcare for  themselves, but they cannot spend even one trillion dollars for universal health for those who are ‘governed’! This is what is considered, by the powers to be,  a democracy and part of the democratic way. — Roland Sheppard, Let the People  Vote on Healthcare!
