United States:

The United States is not a Democracy (A government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly)! Only the 1%, through their ownership of the Reublicrats and who profit from war and the war budget, vote for War and the war budget — A policy, which Gore Vidal called a  Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace. — The 99% Should Decide On War — Not Just The 1% Who Profit From War!  Under a Democracy, The 99% would have the right to vote on the policy of Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace! 82% of US Voters Believe Inflation Is Fueled by Corporations ‘Jacking Up Prices’ New survey data shows that voters “want elected officials to challenge corporate greed to lower prices,” said one advocate. On the heels of fresh data showing that the U.S. inflation rate jumped to a new 40-year high last month, a new survey found that more than 80% of American voters believe costs are rising in part because “big corporations are jacking up prices” while raking in record profits

Malik Miah and Barry Sheppard: United States: Why We Should Oppose Russia’s War With Ukraine Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine is a violation of that nation’s sovereignty and must be opposed by anti-war forces in the United States.      At the same time, we should continue to oppose the actions of Presdent Joe Biden’s administration, which are the main cause of the current crisis.     Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, despite its promise not to do so, the US has marched forward, enlisting former Soviet Republics into the NATO military alliance aimed at Russia. Even if Russia were the most liberal capitalist democracy, it would see the expansion of NATO’s armed forces — which have nuclear weapons and missiles in Western Europe aimed at Russia, up to its borders — as an existential threat.

Environment —Ecosocialism or Ecocide!:

Tens of Thousands March in ‘Look Up’ Climate Rallies Across France Inspired by the allegorical film “Don’t Look Up,” tens of thousands of people across France hit the streets in multiple cities this past weekend to demand climate action. In addition to earning four Oscar nominations, “Don’t Look Up”—Adam Mckay and David Sirota’s political satire about elite indifference and profiteering in the face of imminent but preventable catastrophe—inspired tens of thousands of people in multiple cities across France to march this past weekend at “Look Up” rallies to demand climate action.

US Military Aims For Net Zero By 2050 But With A Carbon Footprint Greater Than Some 140 Countries Critics Say It Needs Radical Change. Among other tactics, the army aims for net-zero emissions by 2050, to electrify its combat and non-tactical vehicles, to power its bases with “carbon-free” electricity and to develop clean global supply chains. Wars, like the one Russia has unleashed on Ukraine, are extreme polluters, and while the army’s plan would significantly reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, experts say it does not do nearly enough.

Western US’s Worst Drought in 1,200 Years Brings Year-Long Fire Season The faster we get “firewise,” the less destruction our fires will bring. Ten weeks after the wind-whipped Marshall fire blasted through Boulder County, Colorado, on December 30, taking with it one man’s life and over 1,000 houses, some residents with the means to do so are now preparing to build back. The instinct to return home, and the planning, saving and grappling with underinsurance that requires, is unfolding amid the backdrop of the western United States’ worst drought in 1,200 years and what’s morphed into a year-long fire season. Winter wildfires by the names of Emerald and Airport have scorched thousands of acres in California; led to the destruction of over 100 structures in Kansas; and amid this writing, prompted the evacuation of 1,100 houses in the Florida Panhandle — at a time of year when those with intimate knowledge of the cycles of burning and regeneration once relied on wetter and cooler conditions to keep blazes at bay.

Michael Roberts: The Three Contradictions of the Long Depression One of my basic theses about modern capitalism is that since 2008, the major capitalist economies have been in what I call a Long Depression.  In my book of 2016 of the same name, I distinguish between what economists call recessions or slumps in production, investment and employment; and depressions.  Under the capitalist mode of production (ie production for profit appropriated from human labour (power) by a small group of owners of the means of production), there have been regular and recurring slumps every 8-10 years since the early 19th century.  After each slump, capitalist production revives and expands for several years, before slipping back into a new slump.  However, depressions are different.  Instead of coming out of a slump, capitalist economies stay depressed with lower output, investment and employment growth than before for a longish period.

As the Cold/Hot War Escalates: Russia Calls Western Arms Shipments to Ukraine ‘Legitimate Targets’ Russia’s Deputy Foreign minister said Moscow has Warned the U.S. That Pouring Weaponry Into Ukraine is a “Dangerous Move.”  A top Russian diplomat said Saturday that Moscow has informed U.S. officials that it views Western arms shipments to Ukraine as “legitimate targets” for military attacks, heightening fears of a direct confrontation between the nuclear-armed powers.     “We warned the United States that the orchestrated pumping of weapons from a number of countries is not just a dangerous move, it is a move that turns these convoys into legitimate targets,” Sergei Ryabkov, Russia’s deputy foreign minister, told a state television outlet Saturday morning.

Why Russia’s Hypersonic Missiles Can’t Be Seen on Radar The age of Russian superweapons is upon us — at least that’s what President Vladimir Putin wants us to believe.    And they are cause for concern because the United States’ traditional early warning systems might not be able to see those weapons coming. Hypersonic weapons such as Russia’s 3M22 Zircon fly so fast and low — at speeds of up to Mach 6 and at a low atmospheric-ballistic trajectory  that they can penetrate traditional anti-missile defense systems.

Education, Health, and Welfare:

The government of the United States can pass laws in a few days to spend tens of trillions of dollars for war and the bailout of Wall Street and the bankers. Yet, those who pass universal healthcare for  themselves, but they cannot spend even one trillion dollars for universal health for those who are ‘governed’! This is what is considered, by the powers to be,  a democracy and part of the democratic way. — Roland Sheppard, Let the People  Vote on Healthcare!
