Quotes of the Day:
A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual doom. — Martin Luther KingJr.
“This is a travesty of justice. By allowing this appeal, the High Court has chosen to accept the deeply flawed diplomatic assurances given by the U.S. that Assange would not be held in solitary confinement in a maximum security prison,” Amnesty International’s Europe director Nils Muižnieks said. “The fact that the U.S. has reserved the right to change its mind at any time means that these assurances are not worth the paper they are written on.” — Majorie Cohn: British Court Trusts US to Protect Assange Even Though CIA Plotted to Kill Him The U.K. High Court accepted U.S. “assurances” of humane treatment if Julian Assange is extradited.
A nuclear weapons-free zone in the Middle East was proposed again the following year, and the year after, with identical votes. In 2018, two proposals regarding a nuclear weapons-free-zone in the Middle East were voted on: the first resolution passed by a vote of 158-6 (the Marshall Islands joined the “no” votes) and the second resolution passed with a vote of 171-2, leaving the United States and Israel in complete global isolation. This pattern of the United States and Israel persists until the present, while Iran has voted in favor of the international consensus every year, without exception. — The International Consensus on How to Prevent a Nuclear Iran That Is Never Discussed in the US

The United States is not a Democracy (A government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly)! Only the 1%, through. their ownershipof the Reublicrats, who profit from war and the war budget, voted for War and the war budget — A policy, which Gore Vidal called a Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace. — The 99% Should Decide On War — Not Just The 1% Who Profit From War! Under a Democracy, The 99% would have the right to vote on the policy of Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace! The United States takes from the poor and gives to the Rich. Tax the Rich! — They Can Afford To Pay!
Assange Can Be Extradited To USA: Rules Complicit UK Court Journalist and founder of the whistleblower organisation WikiLeaks Julian Assange can now be extradited to the US to face charges of espionage, ruled Her Majesty’s High Court on 10 December. This ruling was in favour of an appeal by the US government to overturn the previous decision by the Westminster Magistrates’ Court from January, which denied the extradition on the grounds that the harsh and restrictive prison conditions that Assange may face could worsen his mental wellbeing, creating a real risk of suicide. The UK government, however, is demonstrably not concerned with the well-being of Julian Assange, who spent seven years isolated in the Ecuadorian embassy in London under prison-like conditions. After which, in response to the US extradition request and as a result of a deal between the Ecuadorian government under Lenin Moreno and the US, he was arrested by the London Metropolitan Police and put in Belmarsh maximum-security prison where he’s being held in solitary confinement to this day: an extremely harsh treatment for a person who poses no threat to the public.
The Government/Business/Revolving Door!: Senator Sander: Why I Oppos e Dr. Robert Califf’s Nomination to Run the FDA At a time when the American people pay the highest prices in the world for prescription drugs and as drug companies continue to be the most powerful special interest in Washington, we need leadership at the FDA that is finally willing to stand up to the greed and power of the pharmaceutical industry. Not only have the drug companies spent over $4.5 billion on lobbying and hundreds of millions of dollars in campaign contributions over the past 20 years, they also have created a revolving door between the FDA and the industry. Shockingly, nine out of the last ten FDA Commissioners went on to work for the pharmaceutical industry or to serve on a prescription drug company’s board of directors. Unfortunately, Dr. Califf is not the exception to that rule. After leaving the FDA in 2017, he received consulting fees from Merck, Biogen and Eli Lilly. According to his financial disclosure form, he owns up to $8 million in the stocks of major drug companies. That is exactly the close relationship Big Pharma has exploited to regulate the FDA, instead of the FDA regulating them.
Current Dispute Over ICBMs Is a Quarrel Over How to Fine-Tune the Doomsday Machinery At the level of national policy, nuclear derangement is so normalized that few give it a second thought. Yet normal does not mean sane. Nuclear weapons are at the pinnacle of what Martin Luther King Jr. called “the madness of militarism.” If you’d rather not think about them, that’s understandable. But such a coping strategy has limited value. And those who are making vast profits from preparations for global annihilation are further empowered by our avoidance.

Getting Closer to the End!: Record-High Arctic Temperature of 38°C ‘More Befitting the Mediterranean,’ UN Warns “This new Arctic record is one of a series of observations… that sound the alarm bells about our changing climate.” The World Meteorological Organization on Tuesday confirmed that a new record-high Arctic temperature was set during this summer’s devastating Siberian heatwave, when the Russian town of Verkhoyansk hit 38°C, or 100.4°F.
Texas Border Town Demands Stronger Action to Tackle Cancer-Causing Chemical Pollution Ten of Laredo, Texas’s schools rank in the country’s top 1 percent of schools where students’ health is most at risk from toxic air pollution, in large part due to emissions from one medical equipment sterilization plant. For Edna Ibarra, it was the realization that with every breath her 11-year-old son was breathing in a little more of an industrial carcinogen that drove her to get involved in the fight against air pollution in Laredo, Texas. And her son isn’t the only child exposed to this risk. Close to Ibarra’s home in the La Bota neighborhood of Laredo, you’ll find the Julia Bird Jones Muller Elementary School, a public school attended by roughly 880 kids from kindergarten to 5th grade, almost all of whom are Hispanic. And about 1.6 miles away is a plant owned by Midwest Sterilization Corp — one of the nation’s largest emitters of the carcinogenic chemical, ethylene oxide (EtO). “How do you say, okay, let them breathe something that I know, that EPA knows, that everyone knows causes cancer?” Ibarra, now a member of the Clean Air Laredo Coalition, asked at a December 8 community meeting held in Lardeo’s Fasken Recreation Center. “He’s been breathing EtO for 11 years. You tell me that’s right. Would you want that for your kids?”
Canada: Federal Energy Modelling Ignores Net-Zero Target, Locks In High-Carbon Investments, Analysts Warn One of the key federal agencies responsible for charting Canada’s energy future is under fire for failing to include a full net-zero scenario in its latest annual modelling report released last week. In Canada’s Energy Future 2021, the Canada Energy Regulator (CER) projected the country’s oil and gas production growing steadily to 5.8 million barrels per day in 2032, before falling off slowly to 4.8 million barrels per day in 2050, just a bit below today’s levels, The Canadian Press reported last week. Now, CBC says, outside analysts are pointing out the CER report included no roadmap to meet Canada’s legislated climate target and contribute to the global goal of holding average global warming to 1.5°C.

World Inequality The world has become more unequal in income and wealth in the last 40 years. That’s according to the World Inequality Report 2022, available here. Produced by the World Inequality Lab, run by Thomas Piketty and a group of over 100 analysts from around the world, the report has the most up-to-date and complete data on the various facets of inequality worldwide: global wealth, income, gender and ecological inequality. The report shows how in 2021, “after three decades of trade and financial globalisation, global inequalities remain extremely pronounced … about as great today as they were at the peak of Western imperialism in the early 20th century.” Although the World Inequality report found inequalities between nations had declined since the end of the cold war (mainly due to the rise in living standards in China), it said inequality had increased within most countries and had become more pronounced as a result of the global pandemic over the past two years. The global concentration of personal wealth is extreme. According to the WIR, the richest 10% of adults in the world own around 60-80% of wealth, while the poorest half have less than 5%.

This Outrageous Global Inequality Is a Political Choice The primary cause of “predistributive” inequality is, in a word, privatization: of finance, the natural commons, the knowledge commons (through intellectual-property rights), and public services and amenities. The reality captured by the World Inequality Report 2022 reflects human choices, which means that it can be changed by making other choices. That is why the report is not just a valuable compendium of useful data and analysis but also a guide to action.
Education, Health, and Welfare:
The government of the United States can pass laws in a few days to spend tens of trillions of dollars for war and the bailout of Wall Street and the bankers. Yet, those who pass universal healthcare for themselves, but cannot spend even one trillion dollars for universal health for those who are ‘governed’! This is what is considered, by the powers to be, a democracy and part of the democratic way. — Roland Sheppard, Let the People Vote on Healthcare
Debunking Pharma Lies, Experts Identify 100+ Firms Ready to Make mRNA Vaccines People are dying for corporate profit—it’s that simple. “There is no dearth of able companies in low and middle-income countries to manufacture mRNA vaccines. It’s time now for Big Pharma to stop using this as a lame excuse and start sharing the tech.” Public health experts on Wednesday unveiled a report spotlighting more than 100 firms in Africa, Asia, and Latin America that have the potential to produce mRNA vaccines for Covid-19, putting the lie to the Big Pharma narrative that developing countries lack manufacturing capacity to make the lifesaving shots.
Student Usury Will Begin Anew!: White House Says Restarting Student Loans Is “High Priority,” Sparking Outrage The Biden administration said that it will allow student loan payments to restart in February. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki recently announced that the Biden administration is not planning on extending the student loan payment pause, sparking outrage among debt advocates and people who have struggled with student loan repayments for years. A video of Psaki promising that the administration will soon reveal its plan regarding student debt payments circulated on Twitter over the weekend, garnering 1.7 million views as of Monday. “We’re still assessing the impact of the Omicron variant,” Psaki said. “A smooth transition back into repayment is a high priority for the administration.” The administration is planning to allow the student debt payment pause to expire at the end of January. The pause, which was implemented to aid borrowers as the economy was rocked by the pandemic, has been in place since March of 2020.
Medicare Privatization Scheme Faced Legal Questions About Profiteering Government attorneys expressed concerns that the Medicare direct contracting model — begun by Trump, and continued under Biden — was geared to benefit specific companies In January 2019, ahead of the launch of a new direct contracting model, the Office of the General Counsel for the Health and Human Services Department warned, in comments on a draft of the proposal, that it appeared as if the new project was being set up to benefit specific companies. “We are concerned based on [Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services]’s regular references to organizations like Chen Med, Oak Street Health, and Verily in the comments and otherwise, that this model has been designed wth specific private sector entities in mind. If accurate, this could create ethics concerns, as the creation of this model would give those entities a leg up in themarket,” read the guidance, a copy of which was obtained by The Intercept.
