Quotes of the Day:

Assange is charged in the US under 17 counts of the Espionage Act and one count of hacking into a government computer. The charges could see him sentenced to 175 years in prison, even though he is not a US citizen and WikiLeaks is not a US-based publication. If found guilty it will effectively criminalize the investigative work of all journalists and publishers, anywhere in the world and of any nationality, who possess classified documents to shine a light on the inner workings of power. This mortal assault on the press will have been orchestrated, we must not forget, by a Democratic administration. It will set a legal precedent that will delight other totalitarian regimes and autocrats who, emboldened by the United States, will gleefully seize journalists and publishers, no matter where they are located, who publish inconvenient truths. — Hedges: The Execution of Julian Assange

United States:

The United States is not a Democracy (A government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly)! Only the 1%, through. their ownershipof the Reublicrats, who profit from war and the war budget, voted for War and the war budget — A policy, which Gore Vidal called a  Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace. — The 99% Should Decide On War — Not Just The 1% Who Profit From War!  Under a Democracy, The 99% would have the right to vote on the policy of Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace! The United States takes from the poor and gives to the Rich.  Tax the Rich!  — They Can Afford To Pay!

The Judicial Kidnapping of Julian Assange “Let us look at ourselves, if we have the courage, to see what is happening to us” – Jean-Paul Sartre   Sartre’s words should echo in all our minds following the grotesque decision of Britain’s High Court to extradite Julian Assange to the United States where he faces “a living death”. This is his punishment for the crime of authentic, accurate, courageous, vital journalism. Miscarriage of justice is an inadequate term in these circumstances. It took the bewigged courtiers of Britain’s ancien regime just nine minutes last Friday to uphold an American appeal against a District Court judge’s acceptance in January of a cataract of evidence that hell on earth awaited Assange across the Atlantic: a hell in which, it was expertly predicted, he would find a way to take his own life,  Sartre’s words should echo in all our minds following the grotesque decision of Britain’s High Court to extradite Julian Assange to the United States where he faces “a living death”. Nor will it be decided by the existence of voter suppression laws, the ubiquity of the big lie, massive structural inequality, or the rise of white nationalism to the centers of power, and a politics dominated by white supremacist ideology. Nor will it be decided by the rhetorical accelerant endlessly produced by former President Trump with his frequent allusions to violence and armed revolt.[i] It will be decided by the increasing collapse of conscience, the undermining of truth, and a mass consciousness that supports violence as a central weapon for social change. To the degree that the public can be convinced, as Judith Butler argues, that the “call for democracy is interpreted as sedition [and] the call for freedom is taken to be a call to violence” democracy will suffer from a legitimation crisis and will disintegrate. Under such circumstances, it will be easier for the abyss of fascist politics to gain more legitimacy and prevail in the United States.

Biden Lies Like Trump!: Roaming Charges: King of Tides Biden told many stammering whoppers during the primary campaign, but perhaps none more ludicrous than this one back on November 20, 2019: “And I would make it very clear we were not going to, in fact, sell more weapons to them [Saudi Arabia], we were going to, in fact, make them pay the price and make them, in fact, the pariah that they are. There’s very little social redeeming value of the — in the present government in Saudi Arabia.”

U.S. Travel Restrictions  in Africa Reflect History of Colonialism David A. Love Even as South Africa leads in the scientific war against COVID and developing vaccines, it is a reflexive response for the U.S. and other White-dominated countries to ban African nations in the face of disease. In response to the discovery of the omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus by South African scientists, the U.S. has restricted travel from eight southern African nations. This punishment of an African country for identifying the variant, rather than praising it for its contributions to medicine, science and public health, is emblematic of a long history of colonialism on the continent. We should be outraged, yet sadly not surprised about this.

“Don’t Look Up” is as Funny And Terrifying About Global Warming As “Dr. Strangelove” Was About Nuclear War Adam McKay’s new movie may be the first film in 57 years to equal the comedy and horror of Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece. if you’re wondering whether we’ll do anything about global warming before it destroys civilization, think about this ominous fact: It occupies barely any space in popular culture. This contrasts with the gusher of movies and books in the 1960s, ’70s, and ’80s about nuclear war. Anyone old will remember “The Day After,” “War Games,” “The Planet of the Apes,” “99 Luftballons,” and many, many more in which nuclear terror was the central subject or background.

Campaigners Say Biden ‘Deserves Lump of Coal This Christmas’ for Broken Climate Promises Twelve days of “Biden’s Oily Christmas” events conclude with classic holiday movie parodies. Friends of the Earth on Monday concluded its campaign calling out U.S. President Joe Biden for breaking his promise to end new leasing of public lands and waters to fossil fuel companies with the release of three parody movie trailers based on classic Christmas films.

Amid Tornado Devastation, Sunrise Says ‘Call It What It Is: A Climate Disaster’  As emergency workers and local residents sifted through the wreckage of towns left devastated by the tornado system that hammered six U.S. states over the weekend, the youth-led Sunrise Movement implored policymakers to “call it what it is: a climate disaster”—and act accordingly. “People’s homes have been demolished, 40,000 people are without power, and there are so many unanswered questions that the government should have solutions for,” said Rachael Fantasia, hub coordinator of Sunrise Bowling Green, a Kentucky city where more than 500 houses were reportedly destroyed by tornadoes that left dozens dead in the state.

$9.2 Billion in Federal Tax Breaks Deliver Boost to Canadian Fossils Canada missed out on nearly C$9.2 billion in foregone revenue between 2015 and 2019 thanks to income tax breaks to oil, gas, and coal mining companies, according to a Parliamentary Budget Office analysis produced at the request of Sen. Rosa Galvez (ISG-QC). The government also left behind $179 million in 2019 due to a carbon levy exemption for agriculture, the PBO reported Friday. That amount is expected to increase to more than $1.5 billion in 2030, when the federal floor price on carbon hits $170 per tonne, though the analysts say that figure doesn’t account for the “behavioural response by farmers” that will see them reducing their emissions as the cost rises.

Civil Rights/Black Liberation:

Defining Racism: Individuals and Institutions, Systems and Structures We are at a tipping point in the racial history of the United States — perhaps the most important moment since the civil rights and more radical black/brown/indigenous movements of the 1960s and ’70s. Two dramatically different currents in American life are gaining strength: white supremacy has reasserted itself in the mainstream of public life; and at the same time, a significant segment of white America is joining the struggle for racial justice.

For years now, Wall Street On Parade has been reporting on the probing letters that Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) has sent to Wall Street firms and their regulators in an effort to ferret out the details of systemic corruption and the looting of the American people. Imperialist Hypocrites Impose Blanket Travel Ban on Southern Africa Less than 24 hours after South African scientists announced the discovery of the new Omicron COVID-19 variant, rich countries in Europe, as well as Canada and the United States, slapped highly damaging, blanket travel bans on a swathe of southern African countries. The imperialists are reacting in a haphazard fashion to the discovery of this new strain, whose emergence they facilitated to begin with through hoarding the world’s vaccine supply.

Tory Partying as the Alpha Covid Variant Took Hold is a Grim Symbol of Their Pandemic Response  The most interesting anniversaries are often those which governments fail to publicise and people are unaware of or would like to forget. This is certainly true of 8 December, when it will be one year since the “Kent variant” of coronavirus (aka Alpha and B.1.1.7), was first identified. By then this new, more infectious virus was ravaging the north Kent coast and was to lead to tens of thousands of deaths in Britain between October 2020 and 31 March 2021. I still think of it as the Kent variant because the Covid-19 Genomics UK Consortium said that the key sample came from “near Canterbury”, where I live. A local medical source, who wanted to remain anonymous, gave me more precise information, saying that the first patient suffered from a weak immune system and lived in Margate on the Isle of Thanet, which is 15 miles from Canterbury.

Israel Pushes Hardline in Iran Nuclear Talks After a 5-month hiatus, indirect negotiations between the U.S. and Iran resumed last week in Vienna in an attempt to revise the 2015 Iran nuclear deal (formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action or JCPOA). The outlook isn’t good. Less than a week into negotiations, Britain, France, and Germany accused Iran of “walking back almost all of the difficult compromises” achieved during the first round of negotiations before Iran’s new president, Ebrahim Raisi, was sworn into office. While such actions by Iran certainly aren’t helping the negotiations succeed, there is another country — one that is not even a party to the agreement that was ripped up in 2018 by then President Donald Trump —whose hardline position is creating obstacles to successful negotiations: Israel.

Serbia: Protesters Repel Reactionary Law! The Struggle Must Continue! Most citizens fear that these changes in the law are closely related to the announced arrival of the multinational company, Rio Tinto, which has intentions of mining lithium in western Serbia. This company is notorious throughout the world for the natural destruction it has caused wherever its operations are carried out. Since the announcement of the company’s arrival, there have been local mobilisations in western Serbia and beyond, but the adoption of these amendments to the law, which went ahead without public debate, triggered mass mobilisations on the streets on Saturday 27 November.Education, Health, and Welfare:

The government of the United States can pass laws in a few days to spend tens of trillions of dollars for war and the bailout of Wall Street and the bankers. Yet, those who pass universal healthcare for themselves, but cannot spend even one trillion dollars for universal health for those who are ‘governed’! This is what is considered, by the powers to be,  a democracy and part of the democratic way. — Roland Sheppard, Let the People  Vote on Healthcare
