The primary land management activity in which the Forest Service engages is selling public timber to private logging corporations, while keeping the revenue for its budget. It is quite literally in the commercial logging business, like a giant logging corporation that is subsidized by taxpayers. As the Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals put it in one case: “We have noticed a disturbing trend in the [Forest Service’s] recent timber-harvesting and timber-sale activities…It has not escaped our notice that the [Forest Service] has a substantial financial interest in the harvesting of timber in the National Forest. We regret to say that in this case, like the others just cited, the [Forest Service] appears to have been more interested in harvesting timber than in complying with our environmental laws.”

The source of the infections seemed to be everywhere.Even more alarming was that this strain of salmonella, known as multidrug-resistant infantis, was invincible against nearly all the drugs that doctors routinely use to fight severe food poisoning.With a public health threat unfolding across the country, you might have expected federal regulators to act swiftly and decisively to warn the public, recall the contaminated poultry and compel changes at chicken plants. Or that federal investigators would pursue the root cause of the outbreak wherever the evidence led. None of that happened. Instead, the team at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention closed the outbreak investigation nine months later even though people were continuing to get sick. The U.S. Department of Agriculture, which oversees meat and poultry, was not only powerless to act but said nothing to consumers about the growing threat. So supermarkets and restaurants continued selling chicken tainted with drug-resistant infantis. And they continue to do so today.
Young Climate Organizers Are Calling Out Wall Street By going after the banks that are financing fossil fuel extraction, we’re cutting off the money pipeline that is the fossil fuel industry’s only hope of survival in a world that is eager to transition to clean energy. Why are young people going after financial institutions? Because we know that if we can stop the flow of money, we can stop the flow of oil. The pollution from coal, oil, and gas extraction is heating our planet and increasing the severity of natural disasters. Environmental racism and injustice means these impacts are felt first and worst by communities of color, indigenous peoples, and those living with disabilities. Fossil fuel executives and politicians have known this for decades. Yet the fossil fuel industry continues to expand: building and installing massive new oil pipelines like Line 3 and Trans Mountain and facilities like the Tacoma LNG project. In ‘progressive Seattle’, we continue to install new homes and buildings with fossil fuel heating, even when perfectly good alternatives are available and dozens of cities across the country have outlawed this practice.
COP26: Can Capitalism Save the Planet? On Sunday 31 October, negotiations will officially open for COP26, the latest UN Climate Change Conference. Hosted in Glasgow, Boris Johnson will welcome heads of state from around the world to commence two weeks of negotiations, panel-discussions, and press-conferences. Business leaders will also be present to present their ideas on tackling climate change. Under pressure from events, the ruling class and its representatives have been putting the issue further forward on their agenda. Climate change has moved from a distant threat, to a current crisis. Even the most developed parts of the world are already experiencing climate disasters. This year in New York and in parts of Germany we have seen devastation caused by severe floods of such severity that they were once regarded as 1-in-100-year events. These are set to become common occurrences. This has economic and political implications that the ruling class can no longer afford to ignore.

How U.S. Interference in Cuba Creates a False Picture of Its Society U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) appears to be obsessed with Cuba. Every few days he takes to social media or makes remarks to the press about his desire to overthrow the Cuban Revolution. In recent months, Rubio has played a key role in drumming up support for anti-government protests in Cuba. On September 23, 2021, for instance, Rubio tweeted, “The brave people of Cuba lost their fear of protesting against the dictatorship that represses them. Holguín raises its voice against tyranny.” Rubio included an article about the Cuban town of Holguín in his tweet, where “a group of Cuban citizens” are planning to hold a “march against violence” on November 20. This article appeared in Diario de Cuba, a news site based in Miami, Florida, which received substantial funding from the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) from 2016 to 2019, an independent nonprofit that is largely funded by “the U.S. Congress.”

Democrats Add $775 Million Oil and Gas Subsidy to Bill After Lobbyist Campaign In a move that bucks climate advocates’ cries to end fossil fuel subsidies once and for all, House Democrats included a large handout to the oil and gas industry in the newly released draft text of the White House’s dismally low $1.75 trillion reconciliation package proposal. The new methane fee proposal amends an earlier proposal by Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-Rhode Island) that would have curbed emissions of the greenhouse gas, which is about 86 times more potent at warming the atmosphere than carbon dioxide. Upon rumor of its inclusion, the fossil fuel industry waged a desperate disinformation campaign against Whitehouse’s proposal.
