Cate Jenkins, PhD, a 22-year specialist with the EPA’s Hazardous Waste Identification Division and the author of a 432-page memo to the EPA’s Inspector General as background documentation for the recently released IG report.On January 11, 2002, a memorandum was sent by Cate Jenkins, Ph.D., the head EPA hazardous waste investigator in lower Manhattan after 9/11. This memorandum compared the asbestos levels in the Montana, Libby Hazardous Waste Superfund Site to the levels she found in Lower Manhattan! (In Libby, Montana almost 30% of the Libby residents were hurt by asbestos.) Three months after 9/11, the levels of asbestos found in lower Manhattan were higher than the Libby Superfundsite! Movie Review: 911 Dust and Deceit at the WTC “Epa adminstatrator Christine Todd Whitman announced to New Yorkers, shortly after the 911 attacks on the World Trade Towers that ‘I am glad to reassure the people of New York and Washington DC that their air safe to breathe’ and that we ‘ . . . need not be concerned about environmental issues as [we] return to [our] homes and workplaces’”
9-11 World Trade Center Dust Cloud: How Many Will Die? The “dustification” and the implosion of the World Trade Center (WTC) towers sent clouds of carcinogenic dust across New York City. These towers were built in the late 1970s and asbestos was one of many carcinogenic materials that were used in their construction. Everyone familiar with construction and the carcinogens that are contained in high rise structures, immediately knew that there was a grave risk for all who were downwind from the dust cloud which was formed from the burning and crumbling of the building. Despite the obvious, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Christie Whitman said a week after the attacks: “I am glad to reassure the people of New York … that their air is safe to breathe and their water is safe to drink.”
General Failure: How the U.S. Military Lied About the 9/11 Wars For generals like David Petraeus and Lloyd Austin, there has been no punishment for 20 years of disinformation on Afghanistan and Iraq. Pretty much every day since 9/11, the U.S. military has disciplined soldiers who failed to do their jobs properly. They have been punished for minor offenses, like being late for duty, and for serious crimes, such as murder or assault. Since 2001, there have been more than 1.3 million cases of discipline in the armed forces, according to the Pentagon’s annual reports on military justice. But the generals who misled Congress and the American public about the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have not needed to worry about negative consequences for their careers. After 20 years of conducting a disinformation campaign about what was really happening on the ground, not a single U.S. general has faced any punishment. The reverse happened — they were praised for their deceptively upbeat assessments and given more stars, and when they retired with generous military pensions, they landed high-paying jobs on corporate boards, further profiting from their disingenuousness.
‘Tax These Moochers’: Top 1% Dodge $163 Billion in Taxes Each Year “We can no longer tolerate a rigged tax system that allows the top 1% to avoid $163 billion in taxes that they owe,” said Sen. Bernie Sanders. A Treasury Department report released Wednesday estimates that the richest 1% of Americans are responsible for more than $160 billion in unpaid taxes per year, a finding that comes as Democratic lawmakers are working to bolster IRS enforcement capacity in their emerging reconciliation package.
Record-Breaking Disasters Across World Have Root Cause in Common: Human Activity “The solutions we conceive of as a global society,” a new report states, must “allow for interconnected ways of solving multiple problems at once.” A slew of recent record-breaking disasters that took place in faraway places across the world shouldn’t be seen in isolation but as interconnected events for which human activity is a major root cause, according to a United Nations report released Wednesday. The study (pdf), released by the UN University’s Institute for Environment and Human Security, took a “deep dive” into 10 extreme events that occurred in 2020 and 2021 that “were not only disastrous for people and the environment but were also the symptoms of underlying processes ingrained in our society.”

Noam Chomsky: The US-Led “War on Terror” Has Devastated Much of the World Twenty years ago this week, the terrorist organization al-Qaeda, whose origins date back to 1979 when Soviet troops invaded Afghanistan, hijacked four airplanes and carried out suicide attacks against the Twin Towers and the Pentagon in the United States. Shortly thereafter, the administration of George W. Bush embarked on a “global war on terror”: It invaded Afghanistan and, a year later, after having toppled the Taliban government, raised the specter of an “Axis of Evil” comprising Iraq, Iran and North Korea, thereby preparing the stage for more invasions. Interestingly enough, Saudi Arabia, whose royal family, according to certain intelligence reports, had been financing al-Qaeda, was not included on the list. Instead, it was Iraq that the U.S. invaded in 2003, toppling a brutal dictator (Saddam Hussein) who had committed most of his crimes as a U.S. ally and was a sworn enemy of al-Qaeda and of other Islamic fundamentalist terrorist organizations because of the threat they posed to his secular regime.

Amazon Fires Are Rising Threat to Brazil’s Great Rainforest Brazil’s great rainforest is a reservoir of global richness. Its government has reduced that wealth and burned a resource. For at least 12,000 Amazon species, extinction has just got a little closer. In this century alone, more than 100,000 vital square kilometres of Brazil’s great rainforest have been damaged by fire. In the course of that burning and degradation, up to 85% of all those Amazon plants and vertebrates already listed as threatened have lost precious habitat.The Amazon basin is home to at least 40% of the planet’s remaining rainforest. It is a vital functioning part of the planetary climate machine. It is one of the world’s richest ecosystems: a tenth of all known species on the planet live under its canopy. In just one square kilometre of forest, there could be 1,000 species of tree.

Belarusian Border Crisis Highlights the Reactionary Nature of the Eu Over the past few months, a rising number of migrants have attempted to cross from Belarus into the EU via Lithuania, Latvia and Poland. The numbers are small – amounting to a few thousand people at most (roughly 4,000 entering Lithuania, 340 Latvia and 870 Poland). What has been the response of the EU, which presents itself as a paragon of democratic humanitarianism? It has given its member states on the Belarussian border the green light to meet the innocent victims of imperialism with barbed wire, the deployment of soldiers, imprisonment in prison camps and the construction of a wall along the border.

It Looks Heroic, But You Broke Us Grisly milestones, one after the other. On Tuesday, the U.S. hit 40 million COVID cases since the start of the pandemic, with four million in the last four Delta-inundated weeks, over a quarter of them kids. T
his Labor Day weekend, the number of hospitalized COVID patients was nearly 300% higher than the same time last year, and the number of deaths was over 86% higher. Today, some 100,000 Americans are hospitalized, almost as many as during January’s COVID peak; we are at over 1,500 deaths per day – almost a 9/11 a day – and climbing. Surges are still spreading across GOP states, many of them southern, where vaccination rates are about 40% lower than in the Northeast and malignant “stooge hack dickdrip” idiots like Gym Jordan are still saying things like, “Vaccine mandates are un-American,” never mind George Washington ordering smallpox vaccines for the Continental Army.
With Delta now spreading into western and Midwestern states, COVID-swamped Idaho officials on Tuesday announced they’ll start rationing health care – aka GOP death camps – by activating protocols for “crisis standards of care.” Meanwhile, the usual GOP suspects continue to infect and kill their constituents at unfathomable rates. Texas, despite being so busy suppressing voting, banning abortion and magically “eliminating” rape, has seen over 3.7 million COVID cases and this weekend hit an all-time high in pediatric hospitalizations.
Florida, thanks to its death-dealing, anti-mask-and-vaccine governor, now represents almost 25% of U.S. deaths; in Miami-Dade County alone, 15 teachers died in the last 10 days, including a longtime, much-loved mentor who “leaves behind a wife, son and countless men he inspired,” after which The Miami Herald eviscerated DeSantis as an inept “portrait in selfishness.” In Mississippi, there were 900 deaths in August that included multiple pregnant women; doctors in the ICU were performing emergency C-sections on women hooked up to ventilators to “get the baby out before the mom dies.
” “This never happens,” said one doctor. “Never.” Given all these horrors are both unprecedented and largely preventable – virtually all COVID hospitalizations and deaths are people who inconceivably declined to take a free, safe, readily available vaccine because goddamn the stupid is killing us – PTSD is soaring among doctors and nurses, and many are leaving the field. Mississippi now has at least 2,000 fewer nurses than at the beginning of the pandemic, a growing trend that only adds more strain to already maxed-out health care systems. “It looks heroic, (but) it’s sweaty and hard and chaotic and bloody,” said one Mississippi ICU nurse who recently resigned. “And it’s hard to live in this every day and then go home and live a normal life.” Asked if the system is reaching a breaking point, one nursing manager said, “I think we already broke.”
