Quotes of the Day:
The military Bonapartist regime is corrupt from top to bottom, and rules without any significant support in society, except maybe from a very thin layer of more-privileged elements. This explains why it has to inflict such levels of frenzied violence to beat back the masses. It is deeply fearful of the masses exacting revenge upon it for its criminal behaviour and corrupt rule     General Min Aung Hliang in particular planned to become president after retiring as commander-in-chief, hoping that the public office could shield him from being prosecuted for his years of crimes. The massive victory of the National League for Democracy (NLD) in the 2020 election, however, thwarted his ambitions.     The junta’s party, the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), even with its guaranteed 25 percent of the seats in the parliament, did not have sufficient MPs to appoint Min Aung Hliang to the presidency as they wished under the previous constitution. The 2020 election showed how little support the military officers actually have in Myanmar society.      The working class, with a determined leadership, could have toppled the junta through an armed workers’ insurrection. Unfortunately, no such leadership is present in the situation. This in fact is the key factor that explains the present impasse the masses in Myanmar are far. — The Lessons of the Myanmar Revolution

On 700th Day of House Arrest, Allies Rally for Freedom of Steven Donziger “If we do not now stop corporations like Chevron from weaponizing the law, the rights of all earth defenders will be in jeopardy,” said the human rights attorney. On the 700th day of Steven Donziger’s house arrest, supporters of the human rights attorney gathered outside his New York City apartment on Tuesday night to demand his release and to mourn the 2,000 residents of the Amazon rainforest who have died as a result of carcinogenic fossil fuel pollution. Donziger led the legal team, which represented more than 30,000 Indigenous people and farmworkers harmed by over three decades of oil drilling in Ecuador, that won a $9.5 billion judgement against Chevron in 2013 for deliberately dumping more than 16 billion gallons of toxic wastewater and other hazardous pollutants in the delicate Amazonian ecosystem—resulting in a “rainforest Chernobyl” that has caused widespread suffering throughout the local population. U.S.  Government ‘Made a Deal With the Devil’: Free Press Advocates Call on Biden to Dismiss Trump’s Appeal Against Assange Biden has paid lip service to a free press. Will he follow through on this ideal in relation to Assange?  As the father and brother of imprisoned journalist Julian Assange wrapped up their month long “Home Run for Julian” tour through 16 U.S. cities, the government’s principal witness against Assange recanted his testimony. Sigurdur Ingi Thordarson, whom the Department of Justice (DOJ) had recruited to build its case against Assange, admitted to the Icelandic newspaper Stundin that he fabricated key allegations in the indictment in return for immunity from prosecution by the FBI in a quid pro quo.  The admissions of Thordarson — that he lied about Assange being a hacker — threatens to unravel the government’s case. “The factual basis for this case has completely fallen apart,” Assange attorney Jennifer Robinson told Democracy Now! By enlisting Thordarson to construct a case against Assange, the U.S. government “made a deal with the devil,” constitutional law scholar Stephen Rohde stated during the tour’s June 28 Los Angeles panel discussion, in which I also participated. Afghanistan Awaits Uncertain Future After US Withdrawal The recent departure of United States and NATO forces from Bagram Air Base near Kabul is highly significant in advance of the American military pull-out from Afghanistan two decades after an international coalition invaded that country in the wake of al-Qaeda attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001. It has been one of America’s longest foreign wars, beginning at the height of the cold war with the Soviet Union in the 1970s, when President Carter began US assistance to anti-Communist Mujahideen.  As such, America’s military involvement in Afghanistan is comparable to Vietnam before it withdrew in 1975.  By Deepak Tripathi
The War in Afghanistan Will Drone On:  Biden Acknowledges “Over The Horizon” Air Attacks Planned Against Taliban “Over-the-horizon” air operations, possibly directed at the Taliban, may rely very heavily on drone assassination and drone targeting for manned aircraft. On July 2, fleeing questions from reporters about U.S. plans in Afghanistan, President Joe Biden sought refuge behind the July 4th Independence Day holiday, yet obliquely acknowledged that the U.S. will use some level of “over the horizon” air attacks to prevent the Taliban from taking power, attacks that will include drones and manned aircraft, possibly even B-52s. Ecosocialist Bookshelf, July 2021 A People’s Green New Deal, plus 3 new books on pandemics and 2 on the global food crisis   A People’s Green New Deal By Max Ajl Pluto Press, 2021     What — and for whom — is the Green New Deal? Carefully analysing the GND plans proposed by various mainstream environmentalists, Max Ajl argues convincingly that none of them proposes the changes that are desperately needed to solving today’s interlocked social-ecological crises, which are rooted in the imperialist world system. He outlines outlines an alternative GND that is committed to decommodification, working-class power, anti-imperialism and agro-ecology. Modern Epidemics: From the Spanish Flu to COVID-19  By  Salvador Macip   NEW PANDEMICS, OLD POLITICS By Alex de Waal.  THE PREMONITION A Pandemic Story Michael Lewis  THE ECONOMICS OF SUSTAINABLE FOOD nNicoletta Batini, editor

Trampling the Right to Vote  o“Our battle cry is ‘Let My People Vote.’” The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., June 19, 1965, urging the House to pass the Voting Rights Act. Netflix is streaming a movie based on a true story about integrating a White school after an inferior Black school caught fire in Durham, N.C., in 1971. Titled “The Best of Enemies,” it has no big stars but a big, timely and important story to tell. Watching the enmity between Blacks and Whites, I couldn’t help but feel as if nothing has changed in the half century that’s gone by because of the powerful, seemingly unbridgeable, anti-democratic division in this country today. It’s a throwback to harsh times and violence brought on by the anger and bitterness of the Vietnam War and the incendiary civil rights movement. “The American experiment in dictating the course of history has reached a dead-end,” Andrew Bacevich, professor emeritus of international relations and history at Boston University, wrote recently for TomDispatch. Only Originally Meant for White People: The Constitutional Right to Bear Arms Carries a Racist History As gun violence soars in the United States, we look at the Second Amendment and its racist roots with Carol Anderson, author of the new book, The Second: Race and Guns in a Fatally Unequal America. In the book, Anderson details how the Second Amendment was written to empower local militia groups to put down slave revolts and protect plantation owners. She writes the Second Amendment is “rooted in fear of Black people, to deny them their rights, to keep them from tasting liberty.” Carol Anderson joined us from Atlanta, where she is a professor at Emory University.  “Black Liberals” are Aligned with the US Police State State In a BAR article titled “Black Liberal, Your Time Is Up,” York College Africana Studies professor Yannick Marshall described much of the Black political class ensconced in the Democratic Party as “imposters.” “They take the essence and anger of Black rebellion” and lay claim to it themselves, “although their interests are not aligned with the people who are rising,” said Dr Marshall. Instead, this class uses their influence “to extend the police state” that oppresses Black people.
CIA to Blame for History of Congo Catastrophes After Patrice Lumumba, the Democratic Republic of Congo’s first elected leader, was assassinated in 1961, the country was essentially run by the CIA – a situation that prevailed for much of the next 50 years, said Maurice Carney, a co-founder of Friends of Congo. As a consequence, the African continent’s most resource-rich and geographically strategic nation has been plagued by a “physically scarred and corrupt political culture,” said Carney.
African Monarch on the Ropes A democracy movement in the southern African nation formerly known as Swaziland is demanding that King Mswati III step down from the throne, said Abayomi Azikiwe, editor of Pan African News Wire. State Attorney General Files Suit Charging Wall Street Mega Banks with “Multi-Year Bid Rigging and Price Fixing” Conspiracy in Credit Default Swaps Market Last week the New Mexico Attorney General’s office filed a breathtaking, 128-page anti-trust lawsuit in federal court in New Mexico on behalf of the state’s $31 billion investment fund, the New Mexico State Investment Council. The Council manages a permanent endowment along with money for 23 state agencies. The lawsuit alleges, backed by striking evidence, that the following banks have engaged in a 16-year conspiracy of “bid rigging and price fixing” in the Credit Default Swap (CDS) market: Bank of America/Merrill Lynch; Barclays; BNP Paribas; Citigroup; Credit Suisse; Deutsche Bank; Goldman Sachs; JPMorgan Chase; Morgan Stanley; and RBS.By Pam Martens and Russ Martens

Haiti: President Jovenel Moïse assassinated Haitian President Jovenel Moïse was assassinated early this morning at his home by unidentified gunmen. At the time of writing, it is not clear who carried out this attack or to what end. With the country descending daily into a deeper and deeper crisis, there is now the possibility of an intense struggle for power between various actors, including the Prime Minister, the courts, as well as the armed forces and even Haiti’s powerful gangs. The fact of the matter is that Moïse, a corrupt, authoritarian, right wing president who was originally backed by US imperialism, had become increasingly isolated, and there are many different groups that would have an interest in his removal from power. Education, Health, Science, and Welfare:
The government of the United States can pass laws in a few days to spend tens of trillions of dollars for war and the bailout of Wall Street and the bankers. Yet, those who pass universal healthcare for themselves, but cannot spend even one trillion dollars for universal health for those who are ‘governed’! This is what is considered, by the powers to be,  a democracy and part of the democratic way. — Roland Sheppard, Let the People  Vote on Healthcare!
