10 Reasons Why Climate Activists Should Not Support Nuclear The world needs safe, non-exploitive technologies. Nuclear doesn’t qualify. In a recent Guardian article, Jacobin magazine’s founding editor Bhaskar Sunkara declared that “If we want to fight the climate crisis, we must embrace nuclear power.” He praised nuclear as a clean and reliable and suggested that opponents of nuclear power are either gripped by “paranoia … rooted in cold war associations” or are relying on “outdated information.” I disagree entirely. Here are 10 reasons why nuclear power is still no solution for climate change. 1. Nuclear is dangerous. Building many new nuclear power plants around the globe means a higher risk of unpredictable Fukushima-type accidents. We know more extreme weather events are locked in due to climate change, adding to the danger as time passes. What if a nuclear power plant had been in the path of Australia’s huge bushfires in 2020? What nuclear power plant could withstand super typhoons like the one that flattened Tacloban City in the Philippines in 2013? Greenwashing and Sustainable Investment: Why Capitalism Can’t Solve the Climate Crisis Under pressure to address the climate catastrophe, politicians and investors are cynically putting a green spin on their exploitative activities. In truth, capitalism is killing our planet. Only socialist planning can end this destruction. Addressing the G7 earlier this month, Boris Johnson urged fellow world leaders to unite and “build back better”. This exhortation marked the launch of the Build Back Better World (B3W) Partnership: a project instigated by the Biden administration, and backed by the G7 governments, to funnel private capital into climate, health, digital technology, and gender equality projects in developing countries. EPA Inaction Blamed as US Bees Suffer Second Highest Colony Losses on Record “The worrisome part is we see no progression towards a reduction of losses. Beekeepers lost nearly half of their colonies between April 2020 and April 2021, according to the Bee Informed Partnership survey. Beekeepers this year in the United States reported the second highest annual loss of managed honey bee colonies since records began in 2006, according to results of a nationwide survey released Wednesday. Bad Drought and Dead Trout: a Foreseeable and Avoidable Tragedy Well, here we are. The brown trout are disappearing from Montana’s fabled streams and rivers and all of Montana’s coldwater fisheries may soon follow. Unfortunately, it takes a crisis before our politicians and agencies decide to do what’s necessary instead of what’s politically expedient. So now our streams will be shut down, fish will die, national news will once again wonder “what’s gone wrong in Montana?” Our citizens will lament the loss of these natural assets for which we call Montana home—and if our politicians had a shred of foresight or knowledge, this drought and trout tragedy would have been avoidable. Drought and Famine Stalk Desperate Madagascar Erratic rainfall, locusts and cyclones are causing havoc in desperate Madagascar. Now the climate crisis adds to the misery. Dense swarms of locusts ravage croplands. Starved of food, local people are forced to eat the locusts and other insects. Changes in climate threaten famine across large areas of increasingly desperate Madagascar, an island nation of 27 million people off the east coast of Africa. The outlook is stark. Amer Daoudi, a senior director of the UN’s World Food Programme, (WFP) says people are desperate, particularly in the semi-arid south of the country, where there’s been a prolonged drought. “Famine looms in southern Madagascar as communities witness an almost total disappearance of food sources, which has created a full-blown nutrition emergency”, says Daoudi. “People have had to resort to desperate survival measures, such as eating locusts, raw red cactus fruits and wild leaves.” By Kieran Cooke

King’s role in African Americans’ struggle to earn the right to vote as sanctioned by the Constitution of the United States. The movie’s sanitized scenes of violence perpetrated and egged on by white law enforcement personnel and politicians (including a semi-literate, bible thumping, full-of-hate rural white citizens) on Black Americans were merely the tip of the iceberg of the vast panorama of bigotry, racism, lynchings, violence, and brutality perpetrated on American citizens whose ancestors were forcibly bought and brought, in chains, holding pens, and cages to help make America the economic power of the 19th and 20th centuries, and the world bully since the 1950s. 1% Own 45% of the World’s Personal Wealth While Nearly 3bn People Have Little or No Wealth At All Just 56m or 1% of adults out of 5.3bn globally are millionaires in net wealth terms. And they own 45% of all global personal wealth. The other 99% own the rest and there are nearly 3bn people in the world that have little or no wealth at all (after debts are deducted). Every year I report on the results of the annual Credit Suisse Global Wealth Report. Produced by economists Anthony Shorrocks (with whom I graduated at university), James Davies and Rodrigo Lluberas, this is the most comprehensive study of global personal wealth and inequality between adults around the world. In the 2021 report, the economists find that the global wealth gap widened during the Covid pandemic, swelling the ranks of the world’s millionaires by 5.2 million as the rich cashed in on surging stock and house prices. I quote “During the pandemic, emergency interest rate cuts and government stimulus measures often benefited those least in need of state support, helping their assets grow in value despite the economic downturn.” The report finds that dollar millionaires now account for more than 1% of the global population for the first time in history: 56.1 million individuals had assets worth more than $1m (£720m) in 2020. That compares with the mean average wealth per adult in the world of just under $80,000. By Michael Roberts
