Quotes of the Day:
Modern sport is but a revival of ancient barbarism that has seen elites exploiting and corrupting human physical abilities. In a 2018 article, Anna McCullough quotes Oscar Robertson, a former student-athlete and first president of the NBA Players Association comparing modern sportspersons to gladiators: “Student-athletes are treated like gladiators—revered by fans and coveted by [NCAA] member institutions for their ability to produce revenue, but ultimately viewed as disposable commodities. They are given no ability to negotiate the contents of their scholarships, often punished severely for even the smallest NCAA violations, and discarded in the event they suffer major injuries.” Professional sportspersons are indeed treated as gladiators whose sole role has been reduced to entertaining the cheering crowds, all to the total disregard of the sportspersons’ self-actualisation and wellbeing. Like gladiators, whose primary role was to entertain the ruthless emperor and his royal cohorts, with the cheering crowds serving only as sound effect and visual props, modern sportspersons are indirectly in the employ of sports marketing companies who make billions of dollars from bringing together the administrators, sponsors and advertisers, and broadcasters, each of these making further billions of dollars out of the sweat of other human beings. —

For years, researchers, environmentalists, and community members living near horizontal hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”) sites have argued that this questionable method of extracting natural gas contaminates drinking water. In 2011, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published a controversial draft report regarding an investigation of groundwater pollution related to fracking operations near Pavillion, Wyoming. After examining above- and belowground instances of contamination, the report found that fracking processes can contaminate drinking water. However, EPA scientists were unable to show a widespread, systemic pattern of risk, and the investigation was prematurely withdrawn. Eventually, one of the EPA scientists leading the original investigation, Dominic C. DiGiulio, left the agency for a job at Stanford University. This year, he and Robert B. Jackson published findings from the Pavillion study in Environmental Science & Technology. Their published findings show that not only did fracking operations pose an above- and belowground risk to drinking water, they strongly affected both. Most significantly, the report showed that natural gas companies in Pavillion have failed to maintain aboveground, unlined pits known as “legacy wells,” resulting in local well contamination. Further, the report shows that current fracking in the region can impact and has affected underground sources of drinking water. The natural gas industry has refuted that fracking could affect the water supply, but this research provides evidence to the contrary. Wenonah Hauter, executive director of the environmental nonprofit Food & Water Watch, says, “Had the EPA finalized its own study with similar findings on Pavillion years ago, we might have already turned the corner toward a clean energy future. — New Study on Fracking and Water Contamination

Oil Change International calls out G7 Failure to End All Fossil Fuel Finance G7 Leaders Fail to Raise Ambition on Necessary Climate ActionOil Change International calls out failure to end all fossil fuel finance Today the Group of 7 (G7) leaders released a statement at the close of their summit in Cornwall, UK. In it, they reiterate a commitment to achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change as well as previous commitments to phase out financing for coal projects around the world. However, the leaders failed to follow the advice of the International Energy Agency and call for an end to fossil fuel finance of all sorts, including oil and gas as well as coal. Last week, over 100 Economists as well as over 350 civil society organizations released a pair of letters calling on G7 nations to end all fossil fuel finance. In response to the G7 statement today, Oil Change International experts released the following statements:
G7 Meeting: World Capitalists to the World— Burn Baby Burn! On Climate and Covid-19 Emergencies, G7 Judged a ‘Colossal Failure’ for All the World to See “Never in the history of the G7 has there been a bigger gap between their actions and the needs of the world. In the face of these challenges the G7 have chosen to cook the books on vaccines and continue to cook the planet.” Anti-poverty groups, climate campaigners, and public health experts reacted with outrage and howls of disappointment Sunday after the G7 leaders who spent the weekend at a summit in Cornwall, England issued a final communique that critics said represents an extreme abdication of responsibility in the face of the world’s most pressing and intertwined crises—savage economic inequality, a rapidly-heating planet, and the deadly Covid-19 pandemic. By Jon QueallySolve Nature and Climate Together or Not at All! Sink or swim as one, says science. Solve nature and climate together, or neither of the twin crises will be soluble. Two of the world’s leading scientific institutions have joined forces to arrive at a not very surprising conclusion: solve nature and climate together, or forget them both. If the world does not work to tackle the climate crisis and the extinction threat confronting millions of wild species together, it has little hope of solving either of them separately. So says a report published by the snappily-titled Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), each respected for their commanding knowledge in their own fields. -
Fracking is the process of drilling and injecting fluid into the ground at a high pressure in order to fracture shale rocks to release the natural gas inside.
-
Dozens of wells are fractured daily, and use an average 1.5 million gallons of water per well.
-
Sources vary on the exact “mixture” in the water (and drilling experts say it always varies from well to well), but the injected water contains both sand and chemicals, which can include hydrochloric acid, benzene, synthetic glycols and alcohols, and methane.
-
Water is the universal solvent, so ground water supplies as well as municipal water supplies will always contain traces of any elements, sediments or chemicals that the water runs over or through. This can include iron or copper from water pipes, or magnesium or calcium from rock sediment.
-
Our water supplies will also include trace elements that are flushed or disposed of, like cleaning products, waste run-off or even pharmaceuticals or personal care products (PPCPs).
-
Municipal water suppliers do their best to filter and “clean” water, but the acceptable allowable range of many contaminates may be more than recommended or desired (such as fluoride)

$20,000 Dollars is less than $15 Per Hour Wage!: Only 3 Percent of Jobs on Tennessee Government Website Pay Over $20,000 GOP Gov. Bill Lee has ended extra pandemic unemployment benefits in the state, touting jobs listed on the website. Earlier this month, Tennessee’s Republican Gov. Bill Lee announced that he, like many other Republican governors across the country, would be ending extra unemployment benefits for workers as provided by the federal government. The spurious justification given by Lee and other GOP governors was that people were making too much money off unemployment to want to return to work. But new findings from Tennessee Senate Democrats shows that the real reason for people not being able to or wanting to return to work may be because the available jobs pay far too little. Wall Street’s $3 Billion Political Investment is a Bargain Wall Street has been making huge investments — not in businesses or stocks, but in the American political process. At nearly $3 billion, the financial sector spent record sums on campaign contributions and lobbying during the 2019-2020 election cycle. Wall Street has one goal: to maximize profits. By using wealth as leverage, Wall Street wields immense power over the electoral and legislative processes, to the detriment of ordinary people and American democracy. One part of the answer to this problem is pending legislation to reinvigorate the laws that underpin our self-governance. By Elisa Mccartin
Senator Elizabeth Warren Has One Word for Cryptocurrencies: “Lousy” Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts chairs the Senate Banking Committee’s Subcommittee on Economic Policy. On Wednesday the Subcommittee held a hearing on a topic that is becoming ever more timely with each new Bitcoin extortion attack on an essential U.S. business. The hearing was titled: “Building A Stronger Financial System: Opportunities of a Central Bank Digital Currency.” To set the stage for the need for a regulated alternative to the crime network now trafficking in cryptocurrencies, Warren explained all the ways that cryptocurrencies are simply “lousy” for any socially-redeeming purpose. Warren stated: “Cryptocurrencies have turned out to be a fourth-rate alternative to real currency. First, cryptocurrencies are a lousy way to buy and sell things. Unlike the dollar, their value fluctuates wildly depending on the whims of speculative day traders. You know, in just the last two months, the value of Dogecoin increased by more than ten-fold and then declined by nearly 60 percent. Now that may work for speculators and fly-by-night investors, but not for regular people who are looking for a stable source of value to get paid in and to use for day-to-day spending By Pam Martens and Russ Martens

Sustainable Peace Must End Israeli Apartheid. Anything Else Is Just a Ceasefire. The situation is grave for Palestinians, who only a few weeks ago experienced under Netanyahu’s orders yet another massive assault on Gaza, which ended in the death of more than 200 people including dozens of children, and widespread damage to the enclave’s infrastructure. The person to replace Netanyahu as prime minister is a religious extremist who has been a vocal advocate of Israeli settlements and a fervent opponent of a Palestinian state. By C.J. The government of the United States can pass laws in a few days to spend tens of trillions of dollars for war and the bailout of Wall Street and the bankers. Yet, those who pass universal healthcare for themselves, but cannot spend even one trillion dollars for universal health for those who are ‘governed’!
