The first civil and human rights movement by and for Black people started during the Civil War and the period of Black Reconstruction that followed. It was a time of radical hopes for many freed slaves. But it was also a time of betrayal. Then President Andrew Johnson and the non-radical Republicans, in collusion with the Democratic Party, the party of slavery, sold out the early post-war promises for full equality and “40 acres and a mule”. Instead, the promise of equality was soon replaced by the restoration of the property rights of the former slave owners in the South. This was accomplished by the Compromise of 1877. How did they accomplish this betrayal? The answer is simple—terrorism. They used police and terroristic Ku Klux Klan violence. These extra-legal activities laid the basis for the overthrow of Black Reconstruction and the institutionalization of legal segregation (Jim Crow) in the former slave states. To enforce Jim Crow, Black people were, for decades, indiscriminately lynched and framed. — The Rise and Fall of the Civil Rights Movement
The United States is not a Democracy (A government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly)! Only the 1%, through their ownership of the Reublicrats and who profit from war and the war budget, vote for War and the war budget — A policy, which Gore Vidal called a Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace. — The 99% Should Decide On War — Not Just The 1% Who Profit From War! Under a Democracy, The 99% would have the right to vote on the policy of Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace! The United States takes from the poor and gives to the Rich.
Trump On Earth: A Dark History Of Oil, Power And War Yes, Donald Trump is working closely with the oil and gas industry. He’s hired several former fossil fuel lobbyists and executives to head up federal agencies–including Rex Tillerson, former ExxonMobil CEO, as Secretary of State. One former cabinet member, Department of Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, even told a gathering of industry executives, “our government should work for you.” And yes, Trump has also cultivated close relationships with autocrats in charge of petro-states like Russia and Saudi Arabia. Whoever pays the piper calls the news: Jane Roe Said She Was Paid To Become An Anti-Abortion Crusader Evangelical leaders paid to switch sides in the abortion debate. Norma McCorvey, the woman whose fight for abortion rights manifested in Roe v. Wade, made a shocking admission in an upcoming documentary about her late-in-life conversion into an anti-abortion crusader, The Daily Beast reported Tuesday. In the “deathbed confession,” McCorvey, who died in 2017, revealed to the makers of the FX documentary “AKA Jane Roe” that leaders of the evangelical religious movement paid her to switch sides on the issue. The moment reportedly occurs in the final minutes of the film, which airs Friday. By Lydia O’Connor
Ahmaud Arbery’s Murder Shows Lynching Remains a Reality for Black America On May 4, Ida B. Wells received a posthumous Pulitzer award. The Pulitzer board shared that she was awarded for “her outstanding and courageous reporting on the horrific and vicious violence against African Americans during the era of lynching.” The news rang out internationally and was widely celebrated. A Financial Timesheadline said that Wells’s “overdue” award “helps rebalance history.” Yet shortly after this happened, lynching was a trending topic across the United States. By William C. While 44%of the workimg class struggles to stay alive: “Even as the U.S. economy hums along at a favorable pace, there is a vast segment of workers today earning wages low enough to leave their livelihood and families extremely vulnerable. That’s one of the main takeaways from our new analysis, in which we found that 53 million Americans between the ages of 18 to 64—accounting for 44% of all workers—qualify as “low-wage.” Their median hourly wages are $10.22, and median annual earnings are about $18,000.— Brookings Institution (11/21/2019)
Another Bank Bailout Under Cover of a Virus When the Dodd Frank Act was passed in 2010, President Obama triumphantly declared, “No more bailouts!” But what the Act actually said was that the next time the banks failed, they would be subject to “bail ins” – the funds of their creditors, including their large depositors, would be tapped to cover their bad loans. But bail-ins were tried in Europe, and the results were disastrous. By Ellen BrownEconomists Warn ‘Prolonged Depression Guaranteed’ If GOP Refuse Federal Aid to State and Local Governments The ramifications of the coronavirus pandemic on the U.S. economy will be devastating enough to send the country into a certain and “prolonged depression,” economist Josh Bivens warned Tuesday, unless federal aid is delivered to state and local governments. “State and local governments are currently forecast to be facing revenue shortfalls as large as $1 trillion over the coming years,” Bivens wrote at the Economic Policy Institute blog. “If no help is forthcoming from the federal government to close these shortfalls, the result will be an economic disaster—one that is not confined to these governments.” By Eoin Higgins
Senators Express Outrage at Hearing over Mnuchin’s Sneakiness with $500 Billion of Taxpayers’ Money We’ve been watching Senate Banking Committee hearings for decades. There is typically some level of professional politeness by Senators toward witnesses that are testifying. That didn’t happen yesterday. Both Republicans and Democrats lashed out at Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin for effectively cooking up a deal that put him in charge of $500 billion of taxpayers’ money under the stimulus bill known as the CARES Act and has now left Congress in the dark about how that money is being spent. During the hearing, which was held virtually, Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts summed up the situation to Mnuchin like this: “You are boosting your Wall Street buddies and leaving Americans behind.” By Pam Martens and Russ Martens

Brazil: 13,000 Deaths, Jet Skis And Scandal On 13 May, the officially declared total number of deaths resulting from COVID-19 in Brazil reached 13,149, with 749 deaths registered in the previous 24 hours. The political crisis in the country is also escalating, as our Brazilian comrades report. By Esquerda MarxistaNew revelations about UK government involvement in “regime change” in Venezuela Documents obtained by The Canary under the Freedom of Information Act reveal the existence of a secretive “Venezuela Reconstruction Office” at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. The existence of this office has not been acknowledged publicly and therefore is being kept beyond parliamentary scrutiny. By Jorge MartinThe Growing Outbreak Of Discontent In The US Military The coronavirus crisis is creating dissent within the ranks of the armed forces. This is a worrying development for the capitalist class, and a harbinger of explosive developments to come. It is a well-known feature of revolutionary history that the individual soldiers and sailors who make up the armed forces can be affected by the overarching mood in society and play a key role in the class struggle. The cramped quarters of Navy warships have been likened to “floating factories,” and given the proletarian background of most of their crews, these conditions can breed a fierce class hatred. Health, Science, Education, and Welfare:
The government of the United States can pass laws in a few days to spend tens of trillions of dollars for war and the bailout of Wall Street and the bankers. Yet, those who ‘governn’, pass universal healthcare for themselves, but they cannot spend even one trillion dollars for universal health for those who are ‘governed’! This is what is considered, by the powers to be, a democracy and part of the democratic way. — Roland Sheppard, Let the People Vote on Healthcare
Haves vs. Have-Nots in Healthcare: Why The Haves Are Still WinningProtecting Public Health Requires COVID-19 Treatments to Be Patent-Free he U.S. biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries are furiously mobilizing to develop vaccines and drug therapies against COVID-19, as rapidly as possible. As of May 12, more than 1,400 clinical trials were underway to evaluate potential COVID-19 drugs and vaccines. Unfortunately, the fully privatized nature of U.S. biopharma research and production poses a major barrier that will slow development, despite the acute public health demand. This situation is a legacy of the biopharma companies’ 40-year history of aggressively seeking patent protection for their products in order to secure monopoly intellectual property rights, and thereby guarantee future profit margins. Moreover, as Truthout has reported, “top health officials coordinating the Trump administration’s COVID-19 response indicated to Congress … that they cannot guarantee universal access to vaccines for the highly contagious disease once they are developed.” By Jonathan Alan King
