However, in the final analysis, the union gambled that, in spite of massive opposition to the contract, autoworkers did not see a way forward once it became clear that the union was determined to force through all of GM’s demands. Undoubtedly, many workers who opposed the contract voted “yes” or abstained because they knew that the UAW would punish workers if they rejected the deal by stringing them out for several more weeks before making them vote on the same contract again. — UAW rams through sellout, shuts down strike at General Motors

Gorgeous sandy beaches are fundamental to Florida’s economy. A record 116.5 million tourists visited Florida in 2017, up 3.6% from 2016, generating commerce valued at $67bn. But holding back the effects of hurricanes and high water is a project on an industrial scale – and one that’s only becoming bigger and more fraught. Some are even talking about “sand wars” in the Sunshine state. Since the 1950s Florida authorities have spent $1.3bn “nourishing” the beaches – periodically buying in supplementary sand. Despite a huge effort, nearly half the state’s 825 miles of beaches are now considered “critically eroded”. UAW rams through sellout, shuts down strike at General Motors After a week-long balloting process marked by intimidation, lies and dubious balloting procedures, the United Auto Workers declared on Friday that its sellout agreement with General Motors had been ratified by GM workers. The shutdown of the strike, the longest national walkout in the American auto industry in 50 years, exposes the UAW as an agent of corporate management, organically hostile to the interests of autoworkers. The sellout at General Motors is the greatest warning to workers at Ford and Fiat Chrysler, who are next in line in the UAW’s “pattern bargaining” process. The UAW announced on Friday that it had selected Ford as its next “target” company. Ford is already demanding even deeper cuts than General Motors, in particular to healthcare. By Tom Hall

UAW Bureaucracy Moves to Defend it ‘Concession Stand’ Negoiations: GM Workers Denounce UAW Moves To End Strike On Management’s Terms “The UAW Officials Can’t Be Trusted, They’re Greedy Just Like The Company”. The UAW is acting as if the strike is already over. Workers in Arlington, Texas reported that the UAW began dismantling equipment on the picket lines Thursday before voting concludes on Friday. Workers in Flint, Michigan were told to get ready to return to work as early as the weekend, since GM had already scheduled production. “They’re already taking down generators and other equipment,” an Arlington worker told the WSWS Autoworker Newsletter. “They’re calling it quits before the vote is even over.” He said that there was widespread opposition to the sellout deal but that the UAW was exploiting the economic distress workers were in due to the poverty level strike pay doled out by the UAW itself. Remembering Mark Pittman, the One Journalist Who Would Have Been All Over the Fed’s Latest Wall Street Bailouts Today would have been Mark Pittman’s 62nd birthday. Pittman died of a heart attack at age 52 on November 25, 2009 in the midst of a pitched court battle with the Federal Reserve to obtain data on its secret loans to Wall Street. Writing for Bloomberg News, Pittman was one of the preeminent chroniclers during the financial crisis of the Federal Reserve’s hubris in refusing to shed any light on what eventually turned out to be an astounding $29 trillion of money it created out of thin air to bail out Wall Street’s mega banks and their foreign bank derivatives counterparties. Pittman had appeared in the documentary, American Casino, produced by Leslie and Andrew Cockburn. In that documentary, the Cockburns brilliantly pieced together for the American people the wealth transfer scheme concocted by the mega banks on Wall Street, which minted corrupt billionaires almost overnight while causing the greatest economic suffering by Americans since the Great Depression. Quietly, U.S. and Foreign Banks Have Increased their Borrowings from U.S. Money Market FundsMemories are apparently very short at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The SEC seems to have forgotten that a run on money market funds holding bank commercial paper set off a panic after the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy filing on September 15, 2008. The government had to step in and guarantee the funds. Despite those disastrous days, the SEC has allowed money market funds being sold in the U.S. to hold a staggering $642 billion in the instruments of foreign banks, as of September 30, 2019. It categorizes those instruments as: certificates of deposits, time deposits, sponsored asset-backed commercial paper, and repurchase agreements (repos) where the bank is the counterparty. The government of the United States can pass laws in a few days to spend tens of trillions of dollars for war and the bailout of Wall Street and the bankers. Yet, those who ‘govern’, pass universal healthcare for themselves, but they cannot spend even one trillion dollars for universal health for those who are ‘governed’!
