“It’s starting to become out of control, and we want to rein this in,” Bruce Hicks, Assistant Director of the North Dakota Oil and Gas Division, said in August about companies abandoning oil and gas wells. If North Dakota’s regulators, some of the most industry-friendly in the country, are sounding the alarm, then that doesn’t bode well for the rest of the nation. In fact, officials in North Dakota are using Pennsylvania as an example of what they want to avoid when it comes to abandoned wells, and with good reason. The first oil well drilled in America was in Pennsylvania in 1859, and the oil and gas industry has been drilling — and abandoning — wells there ever since. Pennsylvania’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) says that while it only has documentation of 8,000 orphaned and abandoned wells, it estimates the state actually has over a half million — Will the Public End up Paying to Clean up the Fracking Boom?

It Seems Rich Pedophiles are ‘As American As Apple Pie: Oregon Child Sex Ring Uncovered: “They’re Worth $5000 A Night” Investigators in Oregon have discovered a massive child sex ring in which children were sold as sex slaves to high ranking pedophiles for as much as $5,000 a night. Curry County residents Genevieve Wilson and Jackalene Antunes say they are working to help child victims of human trafficking in Southern Oregon, with very little help from the government. Currypilot.com reports: Soroptimist International, of which Wilson is a member, is trying to educate the public that it’s not just a Third World occurrence, while Antunes, the director of Wally’s House in Gold Beach, interviews children in abusive situations with an ear now fine-tuned to the lingo of the sexually abused. “One thing that always shocks people is that they get hold of these kids — the target group is boys aged 11 to 13 and 10- to 14-year-old girls,” Wilson said. “There’s not as much money in drugs anymore as there is in human trafficking. They take a young child and on a good night, can make $3,000 to $5,000.”

When she broke her hip the first time, she was running, with her son, on a football field. The GM Strike and The Global Class Struggle This week, the strike by 48,000 US General Motors workers has reached a crossroads. The United Auto Workers is trying to shut down the strike on the company’s terms, demanding that workers approve a contract that would shutter the Lordstown, Ohio, assembly plant and two other factories and enable GM to vastly expand its highly-exploited temporary workforce. The bribe-taking UAW officials are hoping they can bully workers into accepting yet another concessions contract. They are prepared to stuff ballots, as they did in 2015, or use any other means to get the contract through. Despite the efforts of “Solidarity House” to make the workers feel isolated and powerless in the face of the giant multinational corporation, the striking workers have immense support.
The Capita;ists Priorities: After fire, Philadelphia refinery paid executives $4,591,500 in bonuses while hundreds were laid off bonuses to eight key executives after a devastating June fire closed the giant Schuylkill River refinery complex, but before the company declared bankruptcy, court records show. Most of the payments were made on July 5, while PES was in the process of closing the East Coast’s largest refinery, according to a filing with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware.
