Since World War I, ‘the war to end all wars’, there have been perpetual wars for perpetual peace, this Laura Gray’s cartoon from the front page of The Militant August 18, 1945, under banner headline: “There Is No Peace” Could Still Be Published Today!During This Economic Crisis, Capitalism’s Three Point Political Program: Austerity, Scapegoat Blacks, Minorities, and ‘Illegal’ Immigrants for Unemployment, and  The Iron Heel.

Commercial banks are supposed to be making safe and sound business loans to keep the U.S. economy humming, creating good-paying jobs and making America competitive around the world. But according to the latest OCC report, of the $38.57 billion held in precious metals deriva-tive contracts by all Federally-insured banks and savings associations in the U.S., JPMorgan Chase Bank NA held $17.509 billion and Citibank NA held $11.691 billion. JPMorgan Chase is currently under a criminal probe by the U.S. Department of Justice involving precious metals trades.    Equally concerning, the trading of precious metals derivative contracts by Federally-insured banks has grown exponentially since 2001. At that time it represented less than $5 billion. During the financial crisis in 2008 and 2009, precious metals derivative contracts at the banks were less than $15 billion. They have more than doubled since that time. — OCC Report: JPMorgan Chase and Citibank Control 76 Percent of all Precious Metals Contracts at 5,362 Federally-Insured Banks

The same Wall Street banks that collapsed the U.S. economy a decade ago in a hybrid form of a tulip bubble called subprime mortgage backed securities, are today allowed by their regulators to run their own secret stock exchanges called Dark Pools, where they are also allowed to trade the shares of their own bank stock as well as companies they brought to the public markets without any earnings history. To pump up the value of these stocks, the same banks are allowed to shill for the companies by issuing “buy” recommendations, which are then duly transmitted to the public by the tens of thousands of stockbrokers (called financial advisors) that are employed by these same banks. — Today’s Wall Street Has All the Hallmarks of Tulip Mania

Trump Is Deepening the ‘Economic War’ Against Iran – Wilkerson

How a Baltimore Billionaire Won a Tax Cut Trump Said Would Help the Poor  This may not come as a huge shock, but it turns out that even the provisions of Trump’s tax cuts that were supposed to help the poor, are going to the wealthy instead.

‘They Despise Diplomacy, and Thirst for War’: Iran Accuses Trump Administration of Closing Path to Peace With New Sanctions“Trump’s desperate administration is destroying the established international mechanisms for maintaining world peace and security.” By Jake Johnson

Our Anal Retentive Government: With Puerto Rico Still Waiting on Approved Emergency Food Aid, Sanders Condemns Trump for ‘Holding Funds in Red Tape Limbo’“Congress passed emergency nutrition assistance for Puerto Rico weeks ago. The administration should immediately release these funds.”  Amid reports that Puerto Rico has still not received the $600 million in emergency food stamp aid that President Donald Trump reluctantly signed into law more than two weeks ago, Sen. Bernie Sanders on Monday accused the White House of “holding the funds in red tape limbo” and said the money must be released “immediately.” By Jake JohnsonInstigators of a Persian Gulf Crisis  Recent weeks have seen tensions between the United States and Iran soar, initially after a May 2019 incident in which four commercial vessels were struck in the Gulf of Oman (two Saudi oil tankers, one Norwegian and an Emirati ship), ebb thereafter and escalate yet again when a similar attack took place a month later on the Japanese Kokuka Courageous and Norwegian Front Altair tankers, also in the Gulf of Oman. Tellingly, when it appeared the war rhetoric had subsided after the first incident it quickly ratcheted up, and by several degrees, after the second, as if the May episode had failed to achieve its goal. President Trump’s apparent last-minute change of heart in calling off planned airstrikes when Iran downed a U.S. military surveillance drone last Thursday highlights the war footing Washington is on. I’m A Journalist But I Didn’t Fully Realize The Terrible Power Of U.S. Border Officials Until They Violated My Rights And Privacy I should have kept my mouth shut about the guacamole; that made things worse for me. Otherwise, what I’m about to describe could happen to any American who travels internationally. It happened 33,295 times last year. My work as a journalist has taken me to many foreign countries, including frequent trips to Mexico. On May 13, I was returning to the U.S. from Mexico City when, passing through immigration at the Austin airport, I was pulled out of line for “secondary screening,” a quasi-custodial law enforcement process that takes place in the Homeland Security zone of the airport. By Seth HarpTrump Signs Order Imposing Sanctions on Iran Supreme Leader  President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday targeting Iran’s supreme leader and his associates with financial sanctions, the latest action the U.S. has taken to discourage Tehran from developing nuclear weapons and supporting militant groups. The sanctions follow Iran’s downing of a more than $100 million U.S. surveillance drone over the Strait of Hormuz that has ratcheted up tensions. Trump pulled back from the brink of retaliatory military Strikes On Iran Last Week, But Is Continuing His Pressure Campaign. By Deb Riechmann and Kevin Freking

Analysis: Iran’s Attack on U.S. Drone Is Just a Preview of What’s to Come in Mideast  Aborting the retaliatory strike is praise-worthy, but it doesn’t seem to have convinced Tehran that it’s better off stopping its provocations By Amos Harel

A True Public Health Emergency’: 70+ Medical Groups Sound Alarm on Climate Crisis Groups lay out action agenda to advance climate solutions and strengthen resiliency Scores of medical groups on Monday called the climate crisis “a health emergency” and laid out what they framed as a blueprint for the public and private sector to take swift action. The agenda is signed by over 70 groups, including the American Medical Association, American Heart Association, Physicians for Social Responsibility, and the National Association of Social Workers. Wages and Social Security Benefits Have Not Kept Up Withe The Increases  in the Cots of Living For Years:   Shadow Government Statistic Alternate Inflation Charts The CPI chart on the home page reflects our estimate of inflation for today as if it were calculated the same way it was in 1990. The CPI on the Alternate Data Series tab here reflects the CPI as if it were calculated using the methodologies in place in 1980. In general terms, methodological shifts in government reporting have depressed reported inflation, moving the concept of the CPI away from being a measure of the cost of living needed to maintain a constant standard of living. Further definition is provided in our  CPI Glossary. Further background on the SGS-Alternate CPI series is available in our Public Comment on Inflation Measurement.

OCC Report: JPMorgan Chase and Citibank Control 76 Percent of all Precious Metals Contracts at 5,362 Federally-Insured Banks As of March 31 of this year, there were 5,362 Federally-insured commebnzrcial banks and savings associations in the United States. Just two of these banks, JPMorgan Chase NA and Citibank NA control 75.7 percent of all precious metals derivatives contracts held by all of the 5,362 Federally-insured banks and savings associations. This finding comes from a report released last week by the regulator of national banks, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC). (See Table 9 in the Appendix of the OCC report.) Farcical Thai election prepares future crises A massive ten-and-a-half weeks after Thailand’s first general election since 2014’s military coup, the leader of said coup, Prayut Chan-o-cha, was voted in as Thailand’s prime minister by the new parliament on 5 June. His victory was about as surprising as discovering that the next pope will be Catholic, since the military junta has spent the last five years engineering the Thai constitution to guarantee they are never out of power. The process has been as bizarre as it was farcical. By Daniel MorleyFor a better Honduras: let’s overthrow the dictatorship, not just the dictator! The class struggle is intensifying in Honduras as the dictatorship increases the level of repression. Just yesterday, our comrades on the ground were witnesses to an attack on the main university campus of UNAH (National Autonomous University of Honduras) in the capital of Tegucigalpa. Since the armed police have refused to repress the people, the military was sent into the university and fired live rounds on unarmed students, injuring four. As the comrades state, this is a clear violation of “the university’s autonomy and an attempt against the lives of the students.” By Fabricio Varela

Biggest demonstration in Czech Republic since 1989 marks the end of political stability  In the last period, the Czech Republic seemed to be a relatively politically stable country in the eyes of the global ruling class; with sufficient economic growth, very low unemployment, and even rising wages. This relative stability, sustained mainly by strong German investments, propped up the support for oligarch prime minister and second-richest Czech, Andrej Babiš, and his Berlusconi-style party ANO 2011. But things have changed, and the masses are moving. By Mirko Honcovic Puerto Rican Activists Reiterate Independence Call at UNhe request for independent Puerto Rico was re-iterated at the United Natns Monday as many petitioners from the island came for a hearing as part of a special committee of the international body. Jocelyn Velasquez, one of the leaders of the resistance movement said the only solution to Puerto Rico’s problems is independence. “Every year we go to the UN Decolonization Committee to raise this problem, but there is no progress,” said Velasquez who is a member of the Socialist Front of Puerto Rico.Capitalism’s/Briton’s Corporate Preditors:  Burning Down the Future The hulk of Grenfell Tower, its charred sides covered by sheets of white plastic, stands as a mute and ominous testament to the disposability of the poor and the primacy of corporate profit. On June 14, 2017, a fire leaped up the sides of the 24-story building, clad in highly flammable siding, leaving 72 dead and 70 injured. Almost 100 families were left homeless. It was Britain’s worst residential fire since World War II. Those burned to death, including children, would not have died if builders had used costlier cladding that was incombustible and if the British government had protected the public from corporate predators. Grenfell is the face of the new order. It is an order in which you and I do not count. By Chris Hedges Yemeni Rebels Strike Saudi Airport Ahead of Pompeo Visit One person was killed and seven others were wounded in an attack by Iranian-allied Yemeni rebels on an airport in Saudi Arabia Sunday evening, the Saudi military said, as the U.S. secretary of state was on his way to the country for talks on Iran. Regional tensions have flared in recent days. The U.S. abruptly called off military strikes against Iran in response to the shooting down of an unmanned American surveillance drone on Thursday.By Aya Batrawy and Darlene Superville

Health, Education, and Welfare:

The government of the United States can pass laws in a few days to spend tens of trillions of dollars for war and the bailout of Wall Street and the bankers. Yet, those who ‘govern’, pass universal healthcare for themselves, but they cannot spend even one trillion dollars for universal health for those who are ‘governed’! This is what is considered, by the powers the to be,  a democracy and part of the democratic way. — Roland Sheppard, Let The People Vote on Healthcare!

‘Modified’: A Film About GMOs and the Corruption of the Food Supply for Profit Parts of the documentary Modified are spent at the kitchen table. But it’s not really a tale about wonderful recipes or the preparation of food. Ultimately, it’s a story of capitalism, money and power and how our most basic rights are being eroded by unscrupulous commercial interests. By Colin Todhunter
