Quotes of the Day:

In The Part Played by Labor in the Transition from Ape to Man, Friedrich Engels wrote:“Let us not, however, flatter ourselves overmuch on account of our human victories over nature. For each such victory nature takes its revenge on us. Each victory, it is true, in the first place brings about the results we expected, but in the second and third places it has quite different, unforeseen effects which only too often cancel the first. …”In December 1999, when I first wrote my essay Whither Humanity? (The Environmental Crisis of Capitalism), there were some doubters, on the left, about the science of the article. However, the essay has held up quite well in the past eight years. Since that time , we now know that “Carbon dioxide rates have been accelerating — that the rate of increase in carbon dioxide emissions has more than doubled since the 1990s”!

Attempts to locate and examine the total of 900 tons of melted reactor fuel (which possibly burned through the wrecked “containments” and foundations of the three units) have failed, because robotic cameras have repeatedly been destroyed by the ferociously hot and radioactive melted wastes. Eleven years after the catastrophe, the condition and location of the melted fuel masses, known as “corium,” is still uncertain because Tepco has yet to develop a robust enough camera.     The reactors’ concrete found-ations were so severely broken up by the record 9.0 magnitude earthquake, that groundwater rushes through cracks and broken pipes, pours over the three huge masses of corium and becomes highly contaminated with a mix of at least 62 radioactive materials. Tepco’s installation of an expensive “ice wall” that was dug into the ground behind the wrecked reactors, was intended to divert the groundwater keeping it away from the foundations. United States:

The United States is not a Democracy (A government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly)! Only the 1%, through their ownership of the Reublicrats and who profit from war and the war budget, vote for War and the war budget — A policy, which Gore Vidal called a  Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace. — The 99% Should Decide On War — Not Just The 1% Who Profit From War!  Under a Democracy, The 99% would have the right to vote on the policy of Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace! The United States takes from the poor and gives to the Rich. Rax the Rich!  — They Can Afford To Pay!

We can have democracy in this country, or we can have great wealth concentrated in the hands of a few, but we can’t have both.”  ― Louis Brandeis

Host ‘Censored and Fired’ by The Hill Over Segment on Tlaib Naming Israeli Apartheid “Sadly, Israel is an apartheid state and we have to push back,” said progressive commentator Katie Halper. “And when we encounter censorship, we can’t just run away with our tails between our legs.”     Progressive commentator Katie Halper said Thursday that she was “censored and fired” by the corporate-owned media outlet The Hill over a segment defending Rep. Rashida Tlaib’s characterization of Israel as an apartheid state, a label that mainstream human rights organizations have used to describe the government’s grotesque treatment of Palestinians.

Lies and Dishonor Plague America’s War Machine Despite the lies, the U.S. war machine has suffered no consequences for their mendacity and malfeasance. As a military professor for six years at the U.S. Air Force Academy in the 1990s, I often walked past the honor code prominently displayed for all cadets to see. Its message was simple and clear: they were not to tolerate lying, cheating, stealing, or similar dishonorable acts. Yet that’s exactly what the U.S. military and many of America’s senior civilian leaders have been doing from the Vietnam War era to this very day: lying and cooking the books, while cheating and stealing from the American people. And yet the most remarkable thing may be that no honor code turns out to apply to them, so they’ve suffered no consequences for their mendacity and malfeasance.

Compromised Talking Heads War and Spy Masters for Democracy It’s instructive to look behind the veil of people that liberal media bring forward as champions of democracy on cable news. Look at some of the imperial war and spy masters that MSNBC has long featured in denouncing the crimes of Donald Trump and his Republic-fascist allies as well as Vladimir Putin. “Left” MSNBC’s roster includes former Central Intelligence Director John Brennan, who oversaw and lied about the United States drone war program under Barack Obama. Another MSNBC favorite is Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, who in 2013 perjuriously told a congressional committee hearing that the National Security Agency did not collect data on millions of Americans. Then there’s frequent MSNBC guest retired General Barry McCaffery, who ordered the criminal slaughter of retreating and surrendered Iraqi troops in after the ceasefire had been declared in Operation Desert Storm and who then failed to properly investigate his troops’ reported massacre of hundreds of Iraqi POWs.

Italy Has a Far-Right Government, But the Real Danger of Fascism Exists in the US At the present historical juncture, the danger of European societies becoming fascist is far less than the one facing the United States. The victory of Giorgia Meloni’s far-right coalition in Italy’s election is yet the starkest evidence of the dramatic consequences that the neoliberal policies of the European Union (EU) are having on the member states. Indeed, the return of old demons in Italy and the spread of far-right movements and parties across Europe are directly linked to the reactionary economic dogmas and shallow integration strategies pursued by the euro masters in Brussels and Frankfurt.

Fukushima: Novel Fixes Fail, Waste Dumping Threatens Pacific Ocean During the 11-year-long, estimated $57.4 billion (partial) decontamination efforts at the destroyed Fukushima-Daiichi reactor site in Japan, almost every novel program invented to deal with the complex, unprecedented triple catastrophe has initially failed and then needed to be re-invented. Unworkable schemes instigated to repair, decontaminate, plug-up, or prevent ongoing radioactive contamination, along with cover-ups and corruption by the Tokyo Electric Power Co. which runs the operation, have left the Japanese public wary of the company’s plans and of safety assurances from the government.     Japan’s extensive bull-dozing and mass collection of contaminated topsoil and debris, poisoned by the meltdowns’ radioactive fallout, has filled approximately 20 million one-ton bags. These millions of tons of cesium-contaminated waste are standing outdoors in mountainous stacks scattered across seven states. Some of the heavy bags have been jostled and broken open by torrential rains during typhoons.

Eight Reasons Why There Hasn’t Been a Global Climate Revolt Yet We are marching and meeting, but our levels of organization and resistance are vastly disproportionate to the anger and concern we feel, and the urgency of the situation.

Environmental Defender Killed Every Two Days Over Last Decade, Report Finds “All over the world, Indigenous peoples and environmental defenders risk their lives for the fight against climate change and biodiversity loss,” said the head of Global Witness. The advocacy group Global Witness on Thursday marked 10 years of collecting data on slain environmental defenders by publishing a new report revealing that at least 1,733 people have been killed over the past decade—a rate of one murder every two days.

Sea Level Acceleration This article addresses the most current research on sea level rise, as well as adaptation measures being taken around the world. Of special interest, brilliant adaptation measures are taking place in the face of higher seas.     “Sea level has been fairly stable for 6,000 years, which is most of human civilization… but its risen eight (8) inches or twenty (20) centimeters in the last century, and the rate is tripling right now.” (Source: John Englander, Expert on Sea Level Rise, Talks with US Harbors About Changing Coastal Waters, July 5, 2022).     This article addresses the most current research on sea level rise, as well as adaptation measures being taken around the world. Acidification of Arctic Happening Up to 4 Times Faster Than Other Oceans The research followed reports that the Arctic is warming nearly four times faster than the Earth as a whole. Researchers in China and the U.S. said Thursday they were “shocked” to discover that the Arctic Ocean is acidifying three to four times faster than the rest of the world’s oceans.     The faster rate of change is due to the speed with which ice in the ocean is melting, according to Wei-Jun Cai of the University of Delaware and Liqi Chen of the Third Institute of Oceanography in China.

Sharks in the Wave Pool The City Council of La Quinta CA last week unanimously cancelled the Coral Mountain project, “a wellness resort community” featuring a 16-acre surf-wave pool. The locals, who prefer “quiet, tranquility, and dark skies” as one opponent said, had more persuasive experts, better publicity, and the worst drought in 1,200 years on their side.     The idea that the final spurt of Colorado River water at the end of the Coachella Canal, which branches off the All-American Canal less than a mile from the Mexican border, would be a pool for machine made surf waves offended the tastes of many La Quinta residents. Or as TV comedian John Oliver put it after an earlier hearing, the project is “monumentally stupid.” Or as Alena Callimanis, one of the organizers of La Quinta Residents for Responsible Development, put it in the Los Angeles Times two days before the final hearing, “There’s got to be a moratorium on this type of building, this type of excess water use…Why do we have to reproduce an ocean wave experience in the middle of the desert? This is the desert, for Pete’s sake.”

Chris Hedges: The Disappearance of Meghan Marohn There is a national epidemic of missing girls and women. This is the story of a friend who has become one of these grim statistics. . . . Over a quarter of a million girls and women go missing in the U.S. every year. Male-perpetrated violence, especially domestic violence, is intimately linked to missing girls and women. The FBI reports more than 80 percent of violent crimes are committed by men. That is 99.1 percent of rapes committed by men and 88.7 percent of murders and manslaughters committed by men.

‘Time to Take to the Streets’: Working Class Hold ‘Enough Is Enough’ Rallies Across UK  “Does a CEO need an extra zero at the end of their salary—or should nurses, posties, and teachers be able to heat their homes?” said one supporter ahead of the #EnoughIsEnough National Day of Action. Weeks of economic justice rallies organized by the Enough Is Enough campaign across the United Kingdom over the past six weeks have been building to a National Day of Action, set to take place Saturday in more than four dozen cities and towns as hundreds of thousands of people protest the country’s cost-of-living crisis.     The campaign, whose roots lie in the trade union and tenants’ rights movements, has outlined five specific demands of the U.K. government as renters have seen their average monthly housing costs skyrocket by 11% on average since last year and household energy bills approaching $4,000 (£3,582) per year.

Shadow Government Statistics Daily UpdateSeptember 30th to August 3rd September 30th to August 3rd

  • Final September 2022 Consumer Sentiment notched back minimally from its Preliminary September reading, still holding shy by 42.0% (-42.0%) of recovering pre-Pandemic levels.

  • Yesterday’s GDP Annual Benchmark Revisions showed the Pandemic’s economic collapse to have been a bit shallower than previously indicated, but the First- and Second-Quarter 2022 consecutive Real GDP, GDI and GNP quarterly contractions all held in place, with minimal change in magnitude, still showing the onset of what now should gain formal recognition as a “new” Recession.
  • August 2022 Money Supply growth suggested no inflation relief. Amidst a continuing and intensifying 52-year peak flight to liquidity in August 2022, Basic Money Supply (Currency plus Demand Deposits) — the best leading indicator of money-driven inflation — surged anew to an unprecedented 122.1% of its pre-Pandemic level, up from July’s 114.4% reading, up 12.7% year-to-year in August from 10.4% in July, while the broader money measures M2 and M3 began to stagnate.
  • The Monetary Base increased as previously estimated by ShadowStats in August, although it appears to have pulled back some in September and a similar early assessment of that series, with a decline in Bank Reserves, nonetheless with another historic high level for Currency in Circulation.

Two Senators – a Republican and a Democrat – Testify to Senate Banking Committee on China’s Threat to U.S. National Security and CompetitivenessYesterday, Senator Robert (Bob) Casey, Jr. (D-PA) and Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) testified before the Senate Banking Committee. At a time when there is little that the two political parties can agree on in Congress, it was refreshing to hear these two Senators from different parties earnestly explain the threat that China’s ambitious agenda poses to the U.S.; how outward investment by U.S. corporations is furthering China’s agenda; and outline legislation to deal with the threat.     Senator Casey explained the problem as follows: “For decades, the United States has steadily ceded its manufacturing power to other countries, particularly foreign adversaries, like the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the Russian Federation. Outsourcing our manufacturing and supply chains has put our economic and national security at risk. Unfortunately, the pandemic exacerbated this problem, as we experienced acute shortages of things like PPE and computer chips, simply because we were reliant on other countries to manufacture them and a broken supply chain to get them to us.

Huge Turnouts’ Reported at UK Cost of Living Protests Organisers describe gatherings as largest wave of simultaneous protests in Britain for years.   Thousands have gathered in dozens of towns and cities across the UK to register their anger at the cost of living crisis in what organisers describe as the largest wave of simultaneous protests seen in Britain for years.

Just Stop Oil Activists Blockade Four London Bridges Climate and cost of living campaigners converged in London protests …. The climate activists took to the streets in London as cost of living campaigners Enough Is Enough also held rallies . . . The protests come as 200,000 union members walked out of work, with rail unions RMT, Aslef and TSSA, and postal workers’ union the CWU, striking over pay and conditions.    Enough Is Enough, which has been supported by senior figures in the RMT and CWU, as well as prominent leftwing MPs, claims 800,000 have signed up to support its demands.

Chaos in Britain: From Bad to Worse There is a common saying that people get the government they deserve. This saying is actually incorrect, as Trotsky points out in his masterly article, The Class, the Party and the Leadership. The same people can, and do, get very different governments in a very short space of time.    But what is certainly true is that the ruling class of every country is now getting the leaders that it richly deserves. These leaders are pushing the whole situation ever nearer to a deep and dangerous precipice.     The case of Britain is very clear in this respect. A long time ago, Trotsky pointed out, the British ruling class did not think in terms of years but centuries. In saying this, he recognised the farsightedness shown by many (though by no means all) of the leaders of British imperialism. How otherwise could a tiny island off the coast of Europe succeed in dominating a quarter of the globe?

Education, Health, Science, and Welfare:

The government of the United States can pass laws in a few days to spend tens of trillions of dollars for war and the bailout of Wall Street and the bankers. Yet, those who ‘:’, pass universal healthcare for themselves, but they cannot spend even one trillion dollars for universal health for those who are ‘governed’! This is what is considered, by the powers to be,  a democracy and part of the democratic way. — Roland Sheppard, Let the People  Vote on Healthcare
