Quotes of the Day:

In the present world, the rights of the capitalists to make a profit are in direct conflict with our basic rights. In this sense, the capitalist system has become a threat to humanity.     Jefferson’s words, from the Declaration of Independence, that human rights are unalienable, mean that these rights can never be superseded. At all points of conflict, the rights of humanity to survive must supersede the right of the few to make a profit. The right to a safe environment is an unalienable human right!     Since environmental illness and destruction are a global concern, it requires all of humanity to act collectively, in our overall interests for our survival as a species, to correct the problem and to remove the obstacle of capitalism. It requires a society where humanity has social, economic, and political control over the entire environment. Such a society, a socialist society, is needed to ensure that all decisions affecting the environment are under the democratic control of humankind so that the production of goods will be done for the needs and survival of humanity instead of the production and the destruction of humanity and other species for profit.     With common ownership of the means of production, and common control and protection of all property and wealth, science and society will be in harmony with the ecosystem and humanity’s future. — Whither Humanity? The Environmental Crisis of Capitalism We Don’t Need a Green New Deal! — We Need a Green Industrial Revolution!

But here is something that can be said with equal certainty. Israel’s apologists – whether Jews or non-Jews – cannot deny all responsibility for Israel’s war crimes when they actively aid and abet Israel in committing those crimes, or when they seek to demonise and silence Israel’s critics so that those war crimes can be pursued in a more favourable political climate.    Such apologists – which sadly seems to include many of the community organisations in Britain claiming to represent Jews – want to have their cake and eat it.    They cannot defend Israel uncritically as it commits war crimes or seek legislative changes to assist Israel in committing those war crimes – whether it be Israel’s latest pummelling of civilians in Gaza, or its executions of unarmed Palestinians protesting 15 years of Israel’s blockade of the coastal enclave – and accuse anyone who criticises them for doing so of being an antisemite.  But this is exactly what has been going on. And it is only getting worse. — Groups That Aid Israel’s War Crimes Can’t Deny All Responsibility for Those Crimes

“The capitalist agribusiness factory farms are breeder grounds for epidemic and pandemics. The coronavirus is the latest virus that had been factory farm bred. “‘ The emergence of this new virus was predictable, even inevitable. To understand why requires looking back to an earlier virus that emerged in China, SARS. Like the new illness, SARS was caused by a coronavirus. In 2003, it exploded out of a “wet market’” in Guangdong where civet cats, raccoon dogs and multitudes of other animals were caged together in tight, squalid conditions.   It appears the new virus has similar origins.    The initial victims were all connected to a huge wholesale market in Wuhan, where a thousand stalls housed untold numbers of live animals kept in crowded, filthy conditions. Such “wet markets” are widespread in China, providing a newly affluent upper class with status-enhancing exotic animals to serve at dinner. Some people also believe that eating wild animals has health benefits.   The problem with the markets is that the unsanitary and tightly packed conditions in which the animals are held create perfect environments for the evolution of viruses that can jump from one species to another. The Chinese government shut down wet markets after the SARS outbreak,   but that ban was short-lived.” —Op-Ed: This New Coronavirus Was Preventable. Rape in the Military: The Inviisible War (2012): An investigative documentary about the epidemic of rape of soldiers within the US military. Congress Promised Action.     After Congress Did Nothing for 9 Years,  the Epidemic, Its Now A Pandemic! Pandemic of Sexual Assault in the Military?    Given the more than 60 Democratic and Republican votes lined up, the Senate is poised to move forward with a new bill that would change the way the military handles sexual assault and other felony crimes by service members. Sponsored by Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and Joni Ernst (R-IA), the new law would assign decision-making on sexual-assault cases and a host of other felonies, including some hate crimes, to a specially trained team of uniformed prosecutors. While the bill will indeed inch the military away from its antiquated practice of allowing commanders to decide whether to prosecute their own officers and soldiers on sexual-assault allegations, if baffles me that it’s still allowed to handle its own violent crimes rather than having them dealt with through our criminal justice system.   Why should our troops enjoy such protected status, as though they exist in a separate reality from the rest of society? Arguably, in these years, the face of America has indeed been militarized, whether we like it or not. After all, we’ve just lived through two decades of endless war, American-style, in the process wasting significantly more than $6.4 trillion dollars, more than 7,000 uniformed lives, and scores of health- and safety-related opportunity costs. Shell: Netherlands Court Orders Oil Giant to Cut Emissions A court in the Netherlands has ruled in a landmark case that the oil giant Shell must reduce its emissions.  By 2030, Shell must cut its CO2 emissions by 45% compared to 2019 levels, the civil court ruled.   The Shell group is responsible for its own CO2 emissions and those of its suppliers, the verdict said. It is the first time a company has been legally obliged to align its policies with the Paris climate accords, says Friends of the Earth (FoE).

All Environmental Laws are a Compromise With Business — To Our Detriment!:      When It Comes to Protecting America’s Rivers and Streams, There’s No Room for Compromise on Science Michael Regan, President Biden’s EPA administrator, must prioritize science and water quality over the demands of big industry. With its “Waters of the United States” rule, President Obama’s administration enacted unprecedented protections of rivers and streams. The Trump administration, ignoring science and the importance of wetlands, tried to return many of those waterways back to polluters by rolling back the Waters of the US rule. Now Michael Regan, President Biden’s EPA administrator, says he wants to forge a compromise. “We don’t have any intention of going back to the original Obama ‘Waters of the U.S.’ [rule] verbatim and we don’t necessarily agree with everything that was in the Trump administration’s version as well,” Regan told a House Appropriations Committee last month. “We’ve learned lessons from both, we’ve seen complexities in both, and we’ve determined that both rules did not necessarily listen to the will of the people. Racist Education System Prevails:   Board of UNC-Chapel Hill Denies Tenure to Distinguished Journalist The faculty at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill selected the highly accomplished Nikole Hannah-Jones to serve as the Knight Chair in Race and Investigative Journalism at the UNC Haussmann School of Journalism and Media. She was quite a catch: she has won a Pulitzer Prize, a coveted MacArthur Fellowship, has worked for major newspapers. She’s even an alumna of UNC. The committee that interviewed her was impressed. They offered her the chair and tenure. All previous holders of the chair at UNC were awarded tenure. But the board of the university withdrew the offer of tenure. They said she lacked academic qualifications. They made that lie up on the spot, because the position is designed not for academics but for people with real world experience of journalism. Twenty-two holders of the Knight Chair at other universities wrote a joint letter in support of Hannah-Jones and told the UNC-Chapel Hill board that they should be ashamed of themselves. The NC Policy Watch boiled the issue down to one word: Race. The Trumpian right is abuzz with fear about the 1619 Project and critical race theory. Nikole Hannah-Jones was in charge of producing the 1619 Project for the New York Times. it seeks to place slavery and racism at the center of the American experience. White traditionalists prefer to think only about the grand achievements of the Founding Fathers. This is the culture war issue that they have put front and center. They are not letting go. This Is What Jamie Dimon Will Tell the U.S. Senate Today (With Annotated Text) Below are selected remarks from Jamie Dimon’s prepared statement for the Senate Banking Committee hearing today, which will take testimony from a total of six Wall Street bank CEOs. Wall Street On Parade’s annotated remarks appear in brackets and italics. “Chairman Brown, Ranking Member Toomey and distinguished members of the Committee, I appreciate the invitation to appear before you to talk about JPMorgan Chase, the strength and resilience of the U.S. financial system, and the people, businesses and communities we serve.” [The strength of the U.S. financial system would, of course, be a lot safer and sounder if the largest bank in the U.S., at which Dimon serves as Chairman and CEO, had not been charged with five felony counts since 2014, all occurring under his leadership. The bank admitted to all five counts.]   By Pam Martens and Russ MartensWorld:

Israeli Police Target Palestinian Journalists at Al Aqsa Mosque Journalists at the Jerusalem holy site documented police arbitrarily denying access, delivering beatings, and firing on reporters with rubber-coated bullets. On may 7, as tensions mounted in Jerusalem, a Palestinian photojournalist at Al Aqsa Mosque, in the Old City, trained his video camera on an Israeli police officer. The police had begun their incursions into the site as protests against evictions of Palestinians in East Jerusalem were growing. The Palestinian journalist at Al Aqsa filmed as the police officer yelled a threat — “One more time and I’ll break your cameras — get out!” — then lunged, causing the journalist to drop their camera. In another video, police are seen attacking another Palestinian journalist, even as the reporter is telling them that he has authorization to be at the compound. And last Friday, police beat Ahmad Gharabli, a Palestinian photojournalist with Agence France-Presse, with a baton.  By Oren Ziv

‘There Needs to Be a Global Outcry’: Palestinians and Allies Decry Israeli Mass Arrests  (There Has Been! —R.S.)”Apartheid inside Israel is when Jewish Israeli mobs chant ‘Death to Arabs’ and brutalize Palestinians in their neighborhoods, while the cops do nothing, only for those same cops to conduct mass arrests of Palestinian citizens two weeks later.” —Remi Kanazi, poet and activist Human rights defenders on Tuesday continued to condemn the ongoing mass arrests of hundreds of Palestinian citizens of Israel who have participated in recent protests against forced displacement and settler attacks in occupied East Jerusalem and the West Bank, as well as the Israeli bombardment of Gaza that killed 248 people.  According to Israeli police, 1,550 Palestinians have been arrested since May 9 during “Operation Law and Order,” a campaign targeting majority Arab cities and towns in Israel. West Bank officials say Israeli forces have killed 25 Palestinians, including four under the age of 18, in the occupied territory since May 10. Israeli authorities claim five of the victims tried to attack Israeli security forces.   By Brett Wilkins

Zionists are Baby Killers: — Attacks on water and sanitation infrastructure are attacks on children.”—Manuel Fontaine, UNICEF: Israel’s Assault on Gaza Left 400,000 Without Regular Access to Clean Water “We stay up all night looking for water to fill plastic buckets,” said one mother in northern Gaza. Israel’s deadly 11-day assault on the Gaza Strip left an estimated 400,000 of the occupied territory’s roughly two million people without access to a regular supply of clean water, a humanitarian nightmare that is driving calls for immediate international aid and an end to the 14-year Israeli blockade. In addition to killing more than 240 Palestinians—including dozens of children—and displacing tens of thousands, Israel’s aerial and artillery bombardment further devastated Gaza’s infrastructure, from sewage systems to electricity lines that power the coastal enclave’s water desalination plants. Education, Health, Science, and Welfare:

The government of the United States can pass laws in a few days to spend tens of trillions of dollars for war and the bailout of Wall Street and the bankers. Yet, those who pass universal healthcare for themselves, but cannot spend even one trillion dollars for universal health for those who are ‘governed’! This is what is considered, by the powers to be,  a democracy and part of the democratic way. — Roland Sheppard, Let the People  Vote on Healthcare

Health Systems of Dozens of Countries Near ‘Total Collapse’ Due to Oxygen Shortages “If oxygen capacity is there for mining companies to extract, the capacity must be there for the health system to save lives.” Persistent inequalities in healthcare have left many health systems in the Global South on the brink of collapse as Covid-19 case numbers climb and vaccinations lag, according to a new study of countries that are lacking oxygen supplies for patients.   The Bureau of Investigative Journalism analyzed data from the Every Breath Counts Coalition, the NGO Path, and the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) and found that at least 19 countries need more than 13 million liquid gallons of oxygen per day to cope with rising case numbers.   India, Nepal, Argentina, Colombia, Pakistan, South Africa, and Iran are among the countries most at risk, the report showed, with fewer than one in 10 people having been vaccinated and the need for oxygen supplies rising more than 20% since March.  By Julia Conley
