But if the size of the debt rises, it will increase the amount of debt servicing costs, if government bonds are used to increase and service the debt. That will eat into available funds for government to spend on services over time. If interest rates are held down and the Bank of England ‘’monetises’’ the debt, then foreign investors will start to take their money out of sterling and the pound will slide, driving up inflation. There is no ‘free lunch’ in debt and no country is an island, including the British Isles. It all depends on whether the UK economy can ‘’grow out’’ of its debt burden as it did after the second world war through a combination of high public investment and rising inflation (that eventually forced the devaluation of the pound). Given that the profitability of capital in the UK is at an all-time low and the business investment rate worse than in any other major economy, the prospects of achieving that are small. Chris Hedges: The Age of Social Murder The ruling elites, despite the accelerating and tangible ecological collapse, mollify us, either by meaningless gestures or denial. The two million deaths that have resulted from the ruling elites mishandling of the global pandemic will be dwarfed by what is to follow. The global catastrophe that awaits us, already baked into the ecosystem from the failure to curb the use of fossil fuels and animal agriculture, presage new, deadlier pandemics, mass migrations of billions of desperate people, plummeting crop yields, mass starvation and systems collapse. The science that elucidates this social death is known to the ruling elites. The science that warned us of this pandemic, and others that will follow, is known to the ruling elites. The science that shows that a failure to halt carbon emissions will lead to a climate crisis and ultimately the extinction of the human species and most other species is known to the ruling elites. They cannot claim ignorance. Only indifference.

What We Got in Biden The wrenching appeals by some on the political left to vote for Biden must sting for some of those who actually did cast their vote for him, or at least against Trump in November 2020. This is the game that plays itself out again and again and again, ad nauseam, in US politics, the politics of the ruling elite. The electorate can’t have even those mild reformers among US leaders such as Bernie Sanders or Ralph Nader. That was made clear during both the 2016 and 2020 election cycles. After 2000, the ruling elite’s errand boys and girls made a pariah out of Nader, a hero in my book! The Democratic Party coalesced around Biden in 2020, even though most knew that his domestic and foreign policies of the past would lead in a direct line to what now seems obvious. The political and economic elite won’t allow for any kind of significant changes to the status quo, even if it means that the entire system goes down the proverbial tubes. They, the elite, would rather have a kinder, gentler face to front for their policies, rather than the bald-face ugliness of a Trump, but in the end they’ll support a Trump and worse if need be. If Biden Wants to Protect Troops, He Should Bring Them Home — Not Bomb Syria Biden seems determined to continue the failed policies of his predecessors, regardless of their illegality. The United States has bombed Syria more than 20,000 times over the past eight years, so last week’s attack on a border post in northeastern Syria, which killed 22 militiamen and apparently no civilians, may not seem surprising to some. However, taking place barely five weeks into his presidency, it is nevertheless disappointing that President Biden appears determined to continue the failed policies of his predecessors, regardless of their illegality. Democracy Is More Than the Vote. It’s Also Our Health and Reproductive Rights. Framed as a battle to save democracy, the 2020 election and its aftermath only exposed the vulnerabilities within the U.S. political system. While millions of voters overcame the “big lie” at the national level, the focus on federal elections has overshadowed the ongoing struggle at the state level to protect democracy. Republicans responded to historic turnout by introducing a wave of legislation restricting voting rights in states across the country. Repeatedly debunked lies about fraud and election administration continue to fuel the proposed changes to a manufactured problem. In Georgia, where a multiracial coalition sent shock waves through the political world, Republicans introduced several dozen bills aimed at limiting the turnout seen in the general and runoff elections. Advocates have recently honed in on two bills, calling them the worst voting legislation since the Jim Crow era. Georgia Senate Bill 241 would end no-excuse absentee ballots and add witnessing and ID requirements for those using absentee ballots.manufactured problem. By Anoa Changa

Public Sector Unions Mean Middle-Class Jobs for Black Workers Government jobs have been an important source of economic mobility for Black workers and their families for many years. The federal government was an early adopter of anti-discrimination provisions, and today about a fifth of federal workers are Black. This includes those employed by the United States Postal Service, which provided well-paying jobs and career pathways to formerly enslaved people well before the rest of government, and in 2020 employed just under a fifth of Black federal workers. State and local governments have similarly emerged as wellsprings of relatively stable and well-paying employment for Black workers and pensions for Black retirees. The public sector’s legacy as a path to the middle class for the Black community persists today; government workers are disproportionately Black, and the pay gap between Black workers and white workers is smaller in the public sector than in the private sector. Senator Ossoff Drops a Bombshell: “The 12 or 13 Largest Banks” Got the Trillions from the Fed’s Repo Loans Last Year The new, 34-year old Democratic Senator from Georgia, Jon Ossoff, let a very big cat out of the bag at yesterday’s Senate Banking hearing. For at least a year, from September 17, 2019 through at least September 30, 2020, the New York Fed, acting as an agent for the Federal Reserve, doled out a cumulative $9 trillion or more in repo loans. The Fed would say only that the money was going to some of its 24 Primary Dealers on Wall Street, without naming any specific bank receiving the money. In June of 2020, the New York Fed abruptly stopped reporting the dollar amounts it was pumping out each day. The most ancient structure on earth is reportedly the megalithic temples in Malta, carbon dated to 3500BCE. Right up until now these were known as the first advanced civilizations. Michael Tellinger and Johan Heine have discovered a sight in Mozambique’s Maputo that dates back 200,000 years. The site is thought to be part of an ancient city that spans 10,000km’s. UK Budget: Coming Out of COVID The UK economy was the hardest hit of the top G7 economies in the year of the COVID. Real GDP fell 9.9%, which the multi-millionaire and richest man in the British parliament, Conservative Chancellor, Rishi Sunak admitted was the worst contraction in national income in 300 years! The UK government also failed to protect the people from COVID-19. Following a resurgence of infections over the winter, around 1 in 5 people in Britain have so far contracted the virus, 1 in 150 have been hospitalised, and 1 in 550 have died, the fourth highest mortality rate in the world. While output partially recovered in the second half of 2020, the latest lockdown and temporary disruption to EU-UK trade at the turn of the year will deliver yet another fall in GDP in Q1 2021.
