South African President Nelson Mandela addressed a joint session of Congress only months after being released from 27 years in a South African apartheid prison. He reminded the political leadership of the United States that “to deny people their human rights is to challenge their very humanity. To impose on them a wretched life of hunger and deprivation is to dehumanise them.” Three decades later, Congress would do well to finally heed that warning.      In a moment of unprecedented crisis, when 140 million people in the richest country on the planet are poor or low-income, when tens of millions of them are on the verge of eviction and millions more have lost their healthcare in the midst of a pandemic, at a moment when Congress and the president are debating the next Covid-19 relief package, isn’t it finally time for human rights and guarantees to become the standard for any such set of policies? — Whose Rights Matter in Pandemic America?

An analysis of a major increase in the minimum wage is different. CBO can correctly analyze some of the mechanical consequences of such a measure, and it does so in this report. Those consequences include a major increase in the total income of low-income families, especially minorities, a large reduction in poverty, an increase in total demand for goods and services, higher payroll tax revenues, and changes in eligibility for and use of various federal programs in health care, nutrition, and the EITC. None of these, taken together, have much net effect on the budget.     As for the effect on jobs, CBO does not know. Its estimate has no valid foundation. Its deficit score for the fifteen-dollar minimum wage is therefore also meaningless. The blatant contradictions, cited above, in the macroeconomic inferences concerning the Raise the Wage Act are sufficient proof that CBO should not have published this report, and no one should rely on it. — Congressional Budget Office Not Competent to Assess Economics of Minimum Wage

President Harry Truman once asked, “How Many Times Do You Have To Get Hit Over The Head Until You Figure Out Who’s Hitting You?” What happened last Saturday was a disgrace to the cause of freedom and truth, yet another humiliation for a Democratic Party that never seems to miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity. Instead, they stand there, backs turned, while the hits just keep on coming.     Anyone who calls themselves a Democrat today should be embarrassed, and the Democratic leadership should be made to hear of it. Attempts to spin the conclusion of that trial as some sort of moral victory are laughable. The managers got right where they needed to be, and then gave away the game ball because it was the easier thing to do. Too many more “victories” like that, and we’ll be inaugurating Donald Trump again in four years. — Democrats Threw Away the Chance to Call Witnesses. I’m Still Not Over It.

United States:

The United States is not a Democracy (A government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly)! Only the 1%, through their ownership of the Reublicrats and who profit from war and the war budget, vote for War and the war budget — A policy, which Gore Vidal called a  Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace. — The 99% Should Decide On War — Not Just The 1% Who Profit From War!  Under a Democracy, The 99% would have the right to vote on the policy of Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace! “He is Guilty” Said 57 Senators, But Trump Walks But video evidence showed Trump cheering on the mob during the violent riot inside the building, not merely exercising his right of “free speech.”     The cynicism of the Republicans afterwards was on full display. Mitch McConnell, the minority leader of the Senate who voted to “acquit,” said Trump was “practically and morally” guilty for the January 6 insurrection but because he is a private citizen, he should not be convicted.     McConnell himself as the then Majority leader of the Senate prevented the Senate from beginning the trial while Trump was still president.     At the end, both the Republican and the Democratic leaders agreed to get the trial over with quickly, for their own reasons.     The Establishment Democrats wanted January 6 put behind them, to “get on” with compromising with Republicans in Congress to “get things done.”     Trump’s lawyers wanted to get the evidence over with.     The Democrats’ House managers at the trial took less than a week to present their case. They called not a single witness. By Malik Miah and Barry Sheppard

‘He Is Lying. People Are Dying’: Calls for Texas Governor to Resign as He Blames Power Outages on Wind and Solar“Five million Texans are without power tonight and temperatures are below freezing. People will most certainly die tonight because of it. But Gov. Abbott had time to go on Sean Hannity to blame the Green New Deal.” As millions of Texans struggled desperately to keep warm amid power outages stemming from the devastating winter storm sweeping the nation, the state’s Republican governor late Tuesday blamed solar and wind for the blackouts—despite the fact that Texas relies overwhelmingly on fossil fuels—and claimed the crisis shows that the Green New Deal would be a “deadly deal” for the United States.  By Jake Johnson

Refugees and Wildlife Face Risk From Border Walls Not only humans but four-legged migrants are at risk from  border walls. Other species can be climate refugees too. Something there is, wrote the American poet Robert Frost, “that does not love a wall.” Thanks to British researchers we now know that something is the white-lipped peccary, the jaguar and the southern spotted skunk. All of them − and many other species − could be affected by border walls like that separating  the US from Mexico.    The barrier between India and Myanmar, too, creates problems for the sloth bear, the Indian pangolin and the large spotted civet. And a fence along the Sino-Russian borders could be hard on the desert hare, the Tibetan antelope, the goitered gazelle and the Tibetan fox. When things become harsh on one side of the wall, none of them can move to a better home.     Which could be bad news because, as the planet heats up, and regional climate zones begin to shift, around one in three mammals and birds could by 2070 be forced to look for more welcoming habitat in another country.     Around 3,200 kilometres of man-made barrier now extend along national boundaries, precisely to prevent the unauthorised movement of refugees. But those same barriers could create problems for some of the 700 or so mammals that may have to shift home as regional climates change, according to a study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.     The US-Mexican border wall alone could obstruct the migration of 122 species of four-legged animal refugee. Patrick Cockburn: The Arab Spring Failed But the Rage Against Misery and Injustice Continues Today The odds were always against the revolutionary upsurge of 2011 succeeding but the protesters can learn from past mistakes There was nothing phoney about this mass yearning for liberty and social justice. What Monroe Doctrine?: Argentina Strengthens Economic and Financial Ties With China Over the last year, Argentine exports to China increased by 50.6 percent, making that Asian country its main trading partner. To face the recession created by Mauricio Macri’s administration (2015-2019) and deepened by the COVID-19 pandemic, Argentina has chosen to further strengthen its economic and financial relations with China, a country with which it shares a “comprehensive strategic partnership” since 2014.Education, Health, Science, and Welfare:

The government of the United States can pass laws in a few days to spend tens of trillions of dollars for war and the bailout of Wall Street and the bankers. Yet, those who pass universal healthcare for themselves, but cannot spend even one trillion dollars for universal health for those who are ‘governed’! This is what is considered, by the powers to be,  a democracy and part of the democratic way. — Roland Sheppard, Let the People  Vote on Healthcare
