Quotes 0f the Day:
When Trump told NFL owners should fire NFL players, who protest police brutality , during the national anthem, Trump was advocating the owner to violate laws laws aginst backlisting. The press was silent! When Barry Bonds was blacklisted by major league baseball the press applauded and openly complicit to this day. The writers have blackballed him from the baseball offame! Employment laws on blacklisting vary by state. But the overall rule is that intentionally preventing a person from getting hired is illegal. At least 29 out of the 50 states have blacklisting statutes, according to legal information provider Nolo. — Employment Laws on Blacklisting President Trump said on Friday night that N.F.L. owners should fire players who kneel during the national anthem, and he encouraged. Trump Says N.F.L. Players Should Be Fired for Anthem Protests
Trump’s chicken coup appears to be a failure, but if we continue with the same political pattern that has prevailed in the post-Vietnam era – of Dems abandoning completely the working class that they only ever halfheartedly embraced, and doing little even when they have the potential power to make reforms (witness the first two years of Obama), then we can expect that what Trump has sown will be reaped by someone smarter and more able than he. Fascism is not going away, because US corporate capitalism is unable to resolve its crises and cannot seem to avail itself of the tools of the past (FDR/Keynes, etc.) Even if some resort were made to these tools, US rulers are intent on continuing to dominate the world. If they cannot do this by capitalist economic competition (against China? What do we manufacture today? Does China need loans from our banks?), they will try to do it militarily. Does this portend a nuclear confrontation? And what in all this will happen to the climate crisis that grows more threatening each year? — Capital, the US Two-Party System and the Chicken Coup

Martin Luther King’s Speech The Other America
United States:
The United States is not a Democracy (A government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly)! Only the 1%, through their ownership of the Reublicrats and who profit from war and the war budget, vote for War and the war budget — A policy, which Gore Vidal called a Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace. — The 99% Should Decide On War — Not Just The 1% Who Profit From War! Under a Democracy, The 99% would have the right to vote on the policy of Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace! The United States takes from the poor and gives to the Rich. Rax the Rich! — They Can Afford To Pay
‘Damning’ New IG Report, Says ACLU, Shows Just How Far Trump Team ‘Was Willing to Go to Destroy’ Immigrant Families” “The incoming administration must reunite the separated families in the United States, but we cannot stop there. These families deserve citizenship, resources, care, and a commitment that family separation will never happen again.” —Lee Gelernt, ACLU Just when you think the Trump administration can’t sink any lower, it does.”As a former leading U.S. Justice Department official on Thursday said he regretted the role he played in the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” migrant family separation policy in the wake of a scathing inspector general report, human and civil rights groups pointed to the probe’s findings as “damning” proof of the administration’s cruelty toward people seeking refuge in the United States. Promise Broken, Before Biden is Even In Office!: ‘$2,000 Means $2,000’: Ocasio-Cortez Says $1,400 Payments in Biden Plan Fall Short of Promised Relief While there is much for progressives to applaud in President-elect Joe Biden’s newly released $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package—from a $15-an-hour federal minimum wage to billions in funding for vaccine distribution—Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said Thursday that the $1,400 direct payments included in the plan fall short of the promise that helped Democrats win control of the U.S. Senate. “$2,000 means $2,000,” the New York Democrat told the Washington Post. “$2,000 does not mean $1,400.” By Jake Johnson

Upper Ocean Temperatures Set a New High Record in 2020 Over 90% of the excess heat due to global warming is absorbed by the oceans Even with the Covid-19-related small dip in global carbon emissions due to limited travel and other activities, the ocean temperatures continued a trend of breaking records in 2020. A new study by 20 scientists from 13 institutes around the world, reported the highest ocean temperatures since 1955 from surface level to a depth of 2,000 meters. The study was published in Advances in Atmospheric Sciences on January 13. It concluded with a plea to the policymakers and others to consider the lasting damage warmer oceans that can be caused as they attempt to mitigate the effects of climate change.
Civil Rights/Black Liberation:
In the final analysis, racism is evil because its ultimate logic is genocide. Hitler was a sick and tragic man who carried racism to its logical conclusion. And he ended up leading a nation to the point of killing about 6 million Jews. This is the tragedy of racism because its ultimate logic is genocide.
White politicians in suburbs talk eloquently against open housing, and in the same breath contend that they are not racist. And all of this and all of these things tell us that America has been backlashing on the whole question of basic constitutional and God-given rights for Negroes and other disadvantaged groups for more than 300 years. So these conditions, existence of widespread poverty, of slums and of tragic conditions in schools and other areas of life, all of these things have brought about a great deal of despair and a great deal of desper-ation, a great deal of disappointment and even bitterness in the Negro communities. And today all of our cities confront huge problems. All of our cities are potentially powder kegs as a result of the continued existence of these conditions. Now one of the answers, it seems to me, is a guaranteed annual income, a guaranteed minimum income for all people and for all families of our country. It seems to me that the Civil Rights Movement must now begin to organize for the guaranteed annual income. Begin to organize people all over our country and mobilize forces so that we can bring to the attention of our nation this need, and this something which I believe will go a long, long way toward dealing with the Negro’s economic problem and the economic problem which many other poor people confront in our nation.

My introduction to King’s, The Other America, for the San Francisco BayView: The Jan. 15 birthday of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be celebrated this year as America’s only ‘Black holiday’ Monday, Jan. 19. On this day, the ruling class and their mass media always feature his 1963 ‘I Have a Dream’ speech, as if he never evolved beyond that point.
During his lifetime, as a leader of the civil rights movement, King was constantly hounded by the government with the most savage malice, the most furious hatred and the most unscrupulous campaigns of lies and slander. Since his death, an effort has been made to convert him into a harmless icon – to canonize him.
Below is one of his last speeches, given over 40 years ago and one year before his assassination, at Stanford University in April 1967 and titled the ‘The Other America.’ Here he speaks not of a dream but of the nightmarish economic condition of Black people. When he talks about ‘work-starved men searching for jobs that do not exist’ and living on a ‘lonely island of poverty surrounded by an ocean of material prosperity,’ the speech remains timely in today’s world.

The government of the United States can pass laws in a few days to spend tens of trillions of dollars for war and the bailout of Wall Street and the bankers. Yet, those who pass universal healthcare for themselves, but cannot spend even one trillion dollars for universal health for those who are ‘governed’! This is what is considered, by the powers to be, a democracy and part of the democratic way. — Roland Sheppard, Let the People Vote on Healthcare
The Latin American School of Medicine, or E.L.A.M., was established by the Cuban government, in 1999, after a series of natural disasters, including Hurricane Mitch, left vulnerable populations in Central America and the Caribbean in dire need of health care. This year, in the aftermath of hurricane season, hundreds of Cuban health workers, many of them E.L.A.M. graduates, will travel to some of the hardest-hit areas of the Atlantic to treat the injured and sick. All of the students who attend E.L.A.M. are international. Many come from Asia, Africa, and the United States. The school’s mission is to recruit students from low-income and marginalized communities, where they are encouraged to return, after they graduate, to practice medicine. In the U.S., black and Latino students represent approximately six per cent of medical-school graduates each year. By contrast, nearly half of E.L.A.M.’s American graduates are black, and a third are Latino. “You would never see those numbers” in the U.S., Melissa Barber, another American E.L.A.M. graduate, told me. — Why African-American Doctors Are Choosing to Study Medicine in Cuba
The Shortage of Black Physicians is a Legacy of Racism and Class-Based Discrimination “Nobody wants to be an emergency at Harlem Hospital but if the Negro surgeon is visiting, pride cuts down the pain.” Author Toni Morrison was alluding to the scarcity of Black physicians in 1926 (Jazz, 1992). Kareem Abdul-Jabbar took similar note almost 100 years later. The basketball legend pointed out that, “Black babies survive more often under the care of Black doctors than white … Black people have a reasonable trust issue with the medical profession dating back to the Tuskegee Experiment.” He explained that U.S. government physicians, studying the natural progression of syphilis, administered inert material to Black men rather than actually treat them. He regards U.S. healthcare as a “more insidious and damaging threat to the health, lives, and economic well-being of Black Americans” than police brutality. He indicates that, “Black men have the lowest life expectancy of any demographic group, living an average of 4.5 years less than white men.” By W. T. Whitney
