Trump Has Pushed Ahead With Drone Strikes, Putting US Citizens in the Crosshairs Continuing the targeted killing program created by Bush and expanded by Obama, Trump loosened restrictions further. President Donald Trump is (almost) out of office. Yet, there still needs to be reckoning with his record on drone strikes, assassination and militarism. Here’s How Big Oil Wants The(ir) Supreme Court to Help Delay and Derail Climate Lawsuits On January 19, 2021 — just one day before President-elect Joe Biden takes the oath of office — the U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments in a climate change accountability lawsuit brought by Baltimore, Maryland, against almost two dozen fossil fuel corporations. Like over a dozen other climate lawsuits, Baltimore’s case seeks to hold major oil and gas companies including Chevron and ExxonMobil accountable for fueling the climate crisis through the extraction and sale of their products and for spreading climate disinformation and downplaying the dangers of fossil fuels to the public and shareholders in order to boost corporate profits. This Loophole in New Mexico’s Methane Rules Is a Gift to Big Oil and Gas In October, New Mexico announced new rules that propose slashing the massive volumes of methane which the oil and gas industry is releasing into the atmosphere. However, the proposed regulations contain a major loophole that will directly benefit large oil and gas producers, as well as some of the world’s largest investment groups. In addition, an Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) analysis shows the rules wouldn’t make a meaningful dent in emissions of this potent greenhouse gas. New Mexico, along with West Texas, is home to the nation’s most prolific, and polluting, oil and gas field, the Permian Basin. Even industry leaders have acknowledged that the Permian needs to address its wasteful practices of flaring (burning) and venting (directly releasing) natural gas, which is primarily methane. According to New Mexico’s new methane rules, the goal is to push oil and gas producers to capture 98 percent of gas production by 2026. But an analysis of the proposed regulations by EDF concludes that the rules, as written, would exempt 95 percent of the oil and gas wells in the state, and thus reduce overall methane emissions by only 21 percent. Various fake news and manipulated statistics have been used to create this false impression. However, indicators that really count have not supported the false picture and were ignored. For example, it is normal in a recovering or expanding economy for the labor force participation rate to rise as people enter the workforce to take advantage of the job opportunities. Shadow Government Statistics Alternate Unemployment Charts The seasonally-adjusted SGS Alternate Unemployment Rate reflects current unemployment reporting methodology adjusted for SGS-estimated long-term discouraged workers, who were defined out of official existence in 1994. That estimate is added to the BLS estimate of U-6 unemployment, which includes short-term discouraged workers. The U-3 unemployment rate is the monthly headline number. The U-6 unemployment rate is the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS) broadest unemployment measure, including short-term discouraged and other marginally-attached workers as well as those forced to work part-time because they cannot find full-time employment. Under Capitalism Wealth ‘Trickles’ Up — It Does’t ‘Trickle’ Down! The Top 1% of Households Own 43% of Global Wealth, 10% Owns 81%, While the Bottom 50% Have Just 1%. The top 1% of households globally own 43% of all personal wealth while the bottom 50% have only 1%. The 1% are all millionaires in net wealth (after debt) and there are 52m of them. Within this 1%, there are 175,000 ultra-wealthy people with over $50m in net wealth – that’s a miniscule number of people (less than 0.1%) owning 25% of the world’s wealth! This information comes from the 2020 Credit Suisse Global Wealth report which has just been released. The report remains the most comprehensive and explanatory analysis of global wealth (not income) and of the inequality of personal wealth. Every year the CS global wealth report analyses the household wealth of 5.2 billion people across the globe. Household wealth is made up of the financial assets (stocks, bonds, cash, pension funds) and property (houses etc) wned. And the report measures this, net of debt. The report’s authors are James Davies, Rodrigo Lluberas and Anthony Shorrocks. China Prepares Large-Scale Rollout Of Coronavirus Vaccines More than 1 million people in China have already received experimental vaccines under emergency use permission. By Provincial governments across China are placing orders for experimental, domestically made coronavirus vaccines, though health officials have yet to say how well they work or how they may reach the country’s 1.4 billion people. Developers are speeding up final testing, the Chinese foreign minister said during a U.N. meeting last week, as Britain approved emergency use of Pfizer Inc.’s vaccine candidate and providers scrambled to set up distribution.
