Christopher Weyant: Trump Style ‘Counting’Quotes 0f the Day:

Headline unemployment was understated for the eighth straight month. The BLS acknowledged continuing misclassification of some “unemployed” persons as “employed,” in the Household Survey. An estimated “upside limit” of 562,000 persons was indicated as the number of “employed,” who more properly should have been counted as “unemployed,” reducing a potential October 2020 U.3 headline unemployment rate of 7.2% to the published headline 6.9% (6.88%). That headline rate was down from a headline 7.9% (7.86%) [potentially as high as 8.3% with misclassifications] in September. Broader October 2020 headline U.6 unemployment [including short-term discouraged workers and those employed part-time for economic reasons] declined to 12.10% from 12.84% in September. Including long-term discouraged/ displaced workers, the October ShadowStats Alternate Measure — moving on top of U.6 — was 26.3%, down from 26.9% in September. — Shadow Government Statistics

Currently, the state minimum is a mere $8.56, and advocates of the increase believe that somewhere in the region of 2.5 million individuals and 1.3 million families will actually be lifted out of poverty. Florida’s Stunning Minimum Wage Win Shows Momentum Extends Beyond Blue States

United States:

The United States is not a Democracy (A government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly)! Only the 1%, through their ownership of the Reublicrats and who profit from war and the war budget, vote for War and the war budget — A policy, which Gore Vidal called a  Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace. — The 99% Should Decide On War — Not Just The 1% Who Profit From War!  Under a Democracy, The 99% would have the right to vote on the policy of Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace! The United States takes from the poor and gives to the Rich. Rax the Rich!  — They Can Afford To Pay!

The United States ‘Law and Order’: “Well, they really didn’t have to worry, because the way power politics works, the World Court can’t do anything. Look, there’s one country in the world at the moment which has refused to accept World Court decision —that’s the United States. Is anybody going to do anything about it?”  — Noam Chomsky

A  Very Small Percentage of the 1% Control the U.S.  ‘Fourth Estate;— The Mass Media!

In 1983, 50 corporations controlled the vast majority of all news media in the U.S. At the time, Ben Bagdikian was called “alarmist” for pointing this out in his book, The Media Monopoly. In his 4th edition, published in 1992, he wrote “in the U.S., fewer than two dozen of these extraordinary creatures own and operate 90% of the mass media”— controlling almost all of America’s newspapers, magazines, TV and radio stations, books, records, movies, videos, wire services and photo agencies. He predicted then that eventually this number would fall to about half a dozen companies. This was greeted with skepticism at the time. When the 6th edition of The Media Monopoly was published in 2000, the number had fallen to six. Since then, there have been more mergers and the scope has expanded to include new media like the Internet market. More than 1 in 4 Internet users in the U.S. now log in with AOL Time-Warner, the world’s largest media corporation. — Media Reform Information Center

Victor Pickard: How to Save American Journalism  Publicly-funded media models make a lot of Americans nervous, but Victor Pickard argues on the latest “Scheer Intelligence” episode that it may be the only way to repair our tattered democracy. IIt’s no secret that the U.S. funding model for journalism is broken, and that this had terrible consequences for our democracy, but it may not be without repair. As advertising revenue newspapers once relied on has increasingly ended up in the pockets of big tech companies such as Google and Facebook, many have shut down their presses, while others such as the Washington Post and Los Angeles Times have turned to billionaires to fund their papers, resulting in a model that has turned journalism into a playground for the uber rich that conceals the economic plight of most of the population. Author Victor Pickard’s latest book, Democracy without Journalism?: Confronting the Misinformation Society Hardcove however, offers a simple solution to our media woes: government subsidies. Pickard argues that the era for commercial journalism is over, especially when it comes to the kind of expensive, local journalism that democracies depend on. In his book, the author and Associate Professor at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania urges his readers to see this crisis as an opportunity to reimagine a better, stronger model for journalism. Why Capitalism Was Destined to Come Out on Top in the 2020 Election No matter who “won” the U.S. election, what will not change is the capitalist organization of the country’s economy. The great majority of enterprises will continue to be owned and operated by a small minority of Americans. They will continue to use their positions atop the capitalist system to expand their wealth, “economize their labor costs,” and thereby deepen the United States’ inequalities of wealth and income. Environment:

Lowe has found that not only are there more kid-sharks in the waters, they’re around longer, too. Juvenile white sharks typically leave California waters for Baja California in the fall, and return in the spring, but that pattern has been changing – probably due to warmer waters and an abundance of food. “We may have white sharks here year-round,” he said.— ‘We’re Seeing More Than Ever’: White Shark Populations Rise Off California Coast

Tomorrow Will Be Too Late to Change Course!  A Troubling Discovery in the Arctic A notable satellite-telephonic call to colleagues in late October from Swedish scientist Örjan Gustafsson of Stockholm University briefly described a haunting discovery. On board the research ship R/V Akademik Keldysh, a 6,240-ton Russian scientific research vessel equipped with 17 on-board laboratories and a library, far off the coast of Russia, Dr. Gustafsson reported: “This East Siberian slope methane hydrate system has been perturbed and the process will be ongoing.” (Source: Sleeping Giant Arctic Methane Deposits Starting to Release, Scientists Find, The Guardian, Oct. 27, 2020) That satellite call referenced a sleeping giant that has enough carbon firepower to adversely impact the world’s climate system. The expedition discovered methane (CH4) that had been securely frozen in shallow subsea permafrost waters forever, and ever, and ever, now “stirring.” Colloquially, “The Monster of the North awakened.” (Although, in fairness to accuracy, the ESAS has been perturbed and leaking/seeping into the atmosphere for some time… but, now it’s much worse than ever before, and terrifyingly, it’s more noticeable to passersby, like expeditions of discerning scientists). ‘We’re Seeing More Than Ever’: White Shark Populations Rise Off California Coast CSU Long Beach shark lab has tagged a record amount of white sharks, signaling a healthy ecosystem – and warmer waters  Chris Lowe is no longer surprised when he sees drone footage of juvenile white sharks cruising near surfers and swimmers in southern California’s ocean waters. Workers in Florida Didn’t Trust Biden, But Relied on Themselves tp Raise the Minimum Wage! Florida’s Stunning Minimum Wage Win Shows Momentum Extends Beyond Blue States In passing Amendment 2, Florida joins seven other states with a $15 per hour minimum wage. In a stunning win Tuesday night, labor activists in Florida managed to pass Amendment 2, raising the state minimum wage up to $15 per hour by 2026. From 2026 onward, it will be inflation indexed, so that its value won’t corrode over time. Needing 60 percent support to become law, the amendment, supported by labor unions and by a political committee called Florida for a Fair Wage, notched up 60.8 percent.  By Sasha Abramsky

Economy:Shadow Government Statistics Alternate Unemployment Charts: Shadow Governmen Statistics Unemployment Rate Through Oceber 2020 is 26.3%The seasonally-adjusted SGS Alternate Unemployment Rate reflects current unemployment reporting methodology adjusted for SGS-estimated long-term discouraged workers, who were defined out of official existence in 1994. That estimate is added to the BLS estimate of U-6 unemployment, which includes short-term discouraged workers. The U-3 unemployment rate is the monthly headline number. The U-6 unemployment rate is the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS) broadest unemployment measure, including short-term discouraged and other marginally-attached workers as well as those forced to work part-time because they cannot find full-time employment.

Education, Health, Science, and Welfare:

The government of the United States can pass laws in a few days to spend tens of trillions of dollars for war and the bailout of Wall Street and the bankers. Yet, those who pass universal healthcare for  themselves, but they cannot spend even one trillion dollars for universal health for those who are ‘governed’! This is what is considered, by the powers to be,  a democracy and part of the democratic way. — Roland Sheppard, Let the People  Vote on Healthcare
