Mary Mallon, better known as Typhoid Mary, was an asymptomatic carrier of Salmonella typhi, the organism known to cause typhoid fever. Mallon worked as a cook for eight different families in and around New York city, infecting seven of the families she worked for. There were a number of deaths in these families as typhoid had a 10% mortality rate at the time. George Soper, a sanitary engineer enlisted by one of the families affected, is credited with discovering Mallon as the source of this outbreak and he followed her around, collecting samples of her urine and fecal matter for testing. — Typhoid Trump a Public Health Threat

The Federal government and each individual state have laws that serve to protect the general well-being of their citizens. In many instances this includes language allowing for observed quarantine, compulsory treatment and even detention. Trump is a public health threat and should be under mandatory quarantine until he is no longer a risk to the general public. The message from the White House should be congruent with science and encourage mask wearing and social distancing, as the right to free speech does not extend to circumstances that create a public threat. If he cannot adhere to these measures, the very measures that ensure the safety of millions of Americans, there is a little cottage in New York that is currently vacant and ready for its next occupant.  — Typhoid Trump a Public Health Threat

Thought Police: Faux Outrage, Intimidation, and the Threat to Free Speech There’s a long history of faux outrage in reactionary U.S. media regarding the alleged threat of “leftist propaganda” in higher education. It’s common to hear laments on the right against “cultural Marxists” in the academy who indoctrinate America’s youth and poison their minds. And far-right media have developed a tried-and-true formula for how to stoke mass outrage within their base, centering on active misrepresentations of faculty speech and stoking support for authoritarian efforts to suppress dissent. By Anthony Dimaggio

Environment:

Radioactive Waste Could Be Killing Residents in Missouri Community In Missouri, federal scientists are finally linking today’s cancers to the nation’s nuclear warfare legacy. n Bridgeton, on the northern edge of St. Louis County, Missouri, a fire burns underground in a vast landfill, creeping closer and closer to a pile of radioactive waste from the World War II era that was dumped there back in the 1970s. This “subsurface smoldering event,” as these odorous, high-temperature chemical reactions are called, at the West Lake Landfill has burned continuously for almost a decade now, keeping nearby residents all too aware of the Superfund site in their backyard. For years, many of these residents have filed lawsuits against Cotter Corporation and Mallinckrodt, the companies responsible for dumping the radioactive nuclear waste in the unlined landfill (a former limestone quarry) as well as in open piles on a field near what’s now the Lambert-St. Louis International Airport. These residents say that this waste has contaminated their homes. Many have sparred in open forums with officials from the Environmental Protection Agency. Others have met personally with EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler. All want answers to an unending list of questions. As Dawn Chapman, co-founder of the grassroots advocacy group Just Moms STL and a mother of three who lives 2 miles from landfill, told me, “The battles at this site never end.” By Austin PriceFederal Court Ruling in Rhode Island Suit Targeting Polluters Called ‘More Evidence of the Momentum Behind Climate Accountability Cases’ The appeals court decision dealt a blow to the fossil fuel giants named as defendants in the Ocean State’s historic climate liability lawsuit. Health Workers Sue Trump Labor Secretary, OSHA Over ‘Unconscionable Delay’ of Protections Against Infectious Disease “Doctors, nurses, respiratory techs, and other healthcare professionals have been treating Covid-19 patients for the better part of a year without basic workplace protections.” —Randi Weingarten, AFTThe Trump administration has refused to resume work on new federal regulations—tabled in 2017—despite the coronavirus pandemic. After months of healthcare professionals battling—as well as contracting and dying from—Covid-19, a coalition of labor unions on Thursday sued the U.S. Labor Secretary and the federal workplace safety agency over the “unconscionable delay” in issuing strong protections from infectious diseases for frontline workers. Despite Its Five Felony Counts, the Federal Reserve Has Entrusted $2 Trillion in Bonds to JPMorgan Chase Imagine that your neighbor across the street had been criminally charged with five felony counts for financial crimes in the past six years and admitted to committing each and every crime to the U.S. Department of Justice. Would you put one-third of all of your money in a safe, give that neighbor the combination, and ask him to hold the safe in his house for you? You would probably be suited up for a straight jacket if you did something like that. That’s effectively what the Federal Reserve, the central bank of the United States, has done when it comes to JPMorgan Chase. As of this past Wednesday, the Fed has a $7 trillion balance sheet and $2 trillion of its agency Mortgage-Backed Securities are sitting at JPMorgan Chase, the bank that the Department of Justice has charged with five criminal felony counts since 2014 – all of which it admitted to. How Venezuela Has Held Back COVID-19 in Spite of the U.S. Sanctions Stranglehold on Its Economy Not for one minute during this pandemic has the United States stopped trying to overthrow the government of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela. A seam of cruelty runs through U.S. policy, which by its sanctions regime prevents Venezuela from open trade of its oil to import key medical equipment to help break the chain of the virus and heal those infected by it. Billions of dollars of Venezuelan government money have been seized by banks in the North Atlantic world, money which President Maduro says is needed to fight COVID-19; even though Maduro’s government says that the money held by the Bank of England can be turned over to the United Nations to buy goods for Venezuela, the government of the UK refuses to part with the funds. Despite this, Venezuela’s people have been able to hold down the rate of infection, and its medical workers have been able to heal large numbers of those who have been infected with COVID-19. Former Venezuelan Ambassador to Mexico María Lourdes Urbaneja Durant was the second health minister in the government of former President Hugo Chávez. She is trained in the fields of social medicine and public health, training which made her a natural leader in the Bolivarian Revolution’s attempt to shift the foundation of medical care from the private to the public sector. In mid-October, I spoke to Ambassador Urbaneja, who left her embassy post in Mexico last year to return to Venezuela, where she has been weathering the storm of this pandemic. By Vijay Prashad

CITGO Medical Aid Funds Used for Terrorist Plans in Venezuela The Simon Bolivar Foundation was used as a front for sending money to right-wing politicians. The candidate for the National Assembly Jorge Rodriguez denounced that the financial resources of the Citgo Petroleum Corporation (CITGO), which the Simon Bolivar Foundation (SBF) supposedly managed for medical aid, were used to finance terrorist plans in Venezuela.

Britain: Corbyn Suspension – This Means War! By suspending Jeremy Corbyn, the right wing has thrown down the gauntlet. A full on witch-hunt is underway – to purge the left and make Labour a reliable party for big business. The left must mobilise and boldly fight back. The suspension of Jeremy Corbyn is a declaration of war. In reality, the Labour right wing has been ruthlessly fighting a war against the left for years now. In this time, the Blairites and bureaucrats have made several declarations of war. Their aim is nothing short of a total liquidation of the party’s left wing. We must not allow this. We must fight back immediately, mobilizing the hundreds of thousands of left-wing Labour Party members who are shocked and appalled at this brazen attack.Editorial: Jeremy Corbyn’s Suspension is a Declaration of War  “Jeremy Corbyn’s suspension from the Labour Party is a declaration of war by the leadership against all socialists. It throws down the gauntlet to the entire left to rally in defence of the leader who brought socialism back as a major force in British politics.” The ostensible reason for Corbyn’s suspension rests on a sleight of hand by which anyone who dares to query contentious allegations is deemed guilty of the claims under dispute. So for making the widely shared observation that “the scale of the problem [of anti-semitism in the Labour Party] was dramatically overstated for political reasons,” Corbyn is labelled “part of the problem.”Education, Health, Science, and Welfare:

The government of the United States can pass laws in a few days to spend tens of trillions of dollars for war and the bailout of Wall Street and the bankers. Yet, those who pass universal healthcare for  themselves, but they cannot spend even one trillion dollars for universal health for those who are ‘governed’! This is what is considered, by the powers to be,  a democracy and part of the democratic way. — Roland Sheppard, Let the People  Vote on Healthcare

Oregon Universal Pre-K Ballot Measure Could Be Watershed Moment in US Education Measure 26-214 would create a tuition-free universal preschool system for 3- and 4-year-olds in Multnomah County. Thanks to the efforts of a committed coalition of local organizers, unions and educators, residents of Oregon’s Multnomah County will soon vote on Measure 26-214, which, if passed, will create a tuition-free, year-round, full-day universal preschool system. Its schools will be open to all 3- and 4-year-olds in the county, which comprises Portland and surrounding areas. The program will be funded through a progressive income tax on high earners, and will pay preschool teachers and assistants a living wage, significantly above the local minimum. The passage of this measure would symbolize truly exemplary progress for early childhood education in the United States, as circumscribed access and systemic underfunding have ensured that, for U.S. preschools, success has been scattered and failures widespread. By Tyler WalicekExperts Warn Trump HHS ‘Endangering People’ by Covering Up Key Covid-19 Hospitalization Data “We’re now in the third wave, and I think our only way out is really open, transparent, and actionable information.” As surging coronavirus hospitalizations across the U.S. push already-strained medical facilities to the brink of full capacity, internal documents obtained by NPR show that the Trump administration is withholding from the public critical hospital data that experts say would be extremely useful in helping communities prepare for, track, and overcome Covid-19 outbreaks.NPR reported Friday that the documents—which are based on hospital data collected and analyzed daily by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)—”highlight trends in hospitalizations and pinpoint cities nearing full hospital capacity and facilities under stress. They paint a granular picture of the strain on hospitals across the country that could help local citizens decide when to take extra precautions against Covid-19.” By Jake Johnson
