Under Capitalism, The ‘Drug War’ Cannot Be Won’! In the ‘Drug War’ The Real ‘Winners’ are the Mega Wall Street Banks That Make $Trillions From Drug Addiction! Banks Have Been Profiting From  “The Drug Trade” Over 20 Years!  In the 2001 article: War on Drugs Dirty Money Foundation of US Growth and Empire Size and Scope of Money Laundering by US Banks by James Petras, Professor of Sociology, Binghamton University, he explains that 500 Billion to a Trillion dollars gets added to world capitalist economy through “illegal means.” he concludes the article with the following: “The increasing polarization of the world is embedded in this organized system of criminal and corrupt financial transactions. While speculation and foreign debt payments play a role in undermining living standards in the crisis regions, the multi-trillion dollar money laundering and bank servicing of corrupt officials is a much more significant factor, sustaining Western prosperity, U.S. empire building and financial stability. The scale, scope and time frame of transfers and money laundering, the centrality of the biggest banking enterprises and the complicity of the governments, strongly suggests that the dynamics of growth and stagnation, empire and re-colonization are intimately related to a new form of capitalism built around pillage, criminality, corruption and complicity.  ‘This Goes Straight to the Top.’”

The intensity of the conflict raging within the US ruling elite, and the open attacks on democratic principles and constitutional legality by Trump in particular, have led even bourgeois media commentators to express concern. Thus Dan Balz of the Washington Post wrote Sunday: “Depending on the outcome of the election and of the resolution of who fills the Ginsburg seat, the battle could easily expand to an even more charged debate over whether the high court speaks for and represents the views of a majority of Americans or even whether the democratic system of government more broadly has become undemocratic.”   Underlying the disintegration of American democracy is the deepening social crisis. Tens of millions are out of work as a result of the pandemic, which has infected seven million and killed 200,000 Americans. One million people face foreclosure imminently. Millions have been cut off from federal extended unemployment benefits and face a complete cutoff of all income support. Neither capitalist party speaks for the working people who are the vast majority of the population. — Supreme Court Fight Deepens Political Crisis Surrounding US Elections

Yelp’s September Local Economic Impact report concluded that 97,966 businesses on Yelp have permanently closed between March 1, shortly before most U.S. shutdowns, and Aug. 31. In total, 163,735 businesses on Yelp have experienced closures in that time period.

Pebble Mine Wrong Mine, Wrong Place At the headwaters of Bristol Bay lies a massive low-grade sulfide ore body, known as the Pebble deposit.  The Pebble Limited Partnership is pushing to develop the deposit and build the Pebble Mine despite public and political opposition and peer-reviewed scientific research showing that large-scale mining in Bristol Bay would have irreversible impacts on Bristol Bay’s world-class salmon populations.‘Another Alarm Bell in the Climate Emergency’ as Arctic Sea Ice Shrinks to Second Lowest Extent on Record “We are headed towards a seasonally ice-free Arctic Ocean, and this year is another nail in the coffin.” Arctic sea ice shrank to the second-lowest extent since records began over four decades ago, federal scientists said Monday, prompting renewed warnings about the climate crisis. The minimum ice cover for 2020 was likely reached on Sept. 15, scientists at the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) announced. On that date, ice measured 1.44 million square miles (3.74 million square kilometers). That coverage is 135,000 square miles (350,000 square kilometers) more than the lowest extent of ice recorded in 2012. “The Earth just rang another alarm bell in the climate emergency,” said Arlo Hemphill, senior oceans campaigner at Greenpeace USA. What the Flint Water Crisis Did to My Family Take it from me: You don’t want to go through what we did. Every community deserves water, life, and dignity. In 2015, my life fell apart. The first signs of trouble came from my son Jaylon. He was five years old and, although he struggled with ADHD, perfectly healthy. But then he started acting out in ways he never had before. His school didn’t know how to handle it, so they started suspending him. By the time he was six, they had suspended him 70 times. Jaylon wasn’t the only child struggling. Many other children in Flint were acting out too, and no one knew why. Now we do: It was lead poisoning. That same year, I was pregnant. We didn’t yet know we weren’t upposed to drink the water. We didn’t yet know we were bathing in poison. By Nakiya WakesCarbon Credits Do Nothing to Lower Carbon Dioxide Emissions:   Europe Drives Destruction of US Forests in the Name of Fighting Climate Change U.S. forests are being chopped down to feed the EU’s voracious demand for wood pellets to generate biomass electricity. urope is often considered to be a global leader on climate action. For over a decade, the European Union (EU) has been actively promoting the need for action on climate change, pushing policies that scale back carbon emissions and support the growth of renewable energy. On the bright side, this has led to the retirement of a large number of coal-burning power plants and increased adoption of solar and wind power. However, a number of countries have embraced biomass electricity, a short-term fix that is at best a false solution, and at worst is speeding up carbon emissions, pollution and forest destruction. In fact, though many may believe that solar and wind power are the main sources of the EU’s renewable energy, it is actually biomass, which represents nearly 60 percent of the total. Biomass electricity is generated by burning organic matter. Forests have rapidly become a primary source of biomass fuel in the EU. Flawed carbon accounting assumes burning trees is carbon-neutral if a tree is planted to replace the one that has been chopped down, but biomass imported from the U.S. to the EU is never properly accounted for. This faulty logic has led to massive renewable energy subsidies for biomass under the EU Renewable Energy Directive program. It has further encouraged countries like the U.K., Netherlands and Denmark to subsidize the destruction of forests for fuel at a time when we need to let forests grow to absorb carbon from the atmosphere, protect biodiversity and shore up natural protections against extreme flooding and droughts. For example, thanks to an average £2.1 million in subsidies every day, Drax, the largest carbon emitter in the U.K., is now also the world’s largest burner of wood for power.  By Danna SmithLife in the US Has the Hallmarks of a “Low-Grade War Zone” Journalist Dahr Jamail says what’s happening in the US is frighteningly similar to what he saw while reporting in Iraq. Countless red flags have sprung up in recent months indicating a creeping authoritarianism coming into full form. Vigilante forms of far right “justice” have become commonplace, as in the high-profile case of 17-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and the numerous cases of far right violence and intimidation directed at Black Lives Matter activists since nationwide protests erupted in the wake of the police murder of George Floyd in May. The president dog-whistles to his white supremacist base regularly, and may not even accept the election results this November if he loses. This is what it looks like, feels like, when a nation’s social fabric frays, when a society eats itself alive, and the center can no longer hold. By Patrick FarnsworthUpgrading Building Codes Can Curb Drinking Water Contamination Due to Wildfires Less than halfway through the 2020 wildfire season, fires are burning large swaths of the western U.S. As in previous years, these disasters have entered populated areas, damaging drinking water networks. Water systems have lost pressure, potentially sucking in pollutants, and several utilities are warning of possible and confirmed chemical contamination. We are environmental engineers who help communities affected by disasters, including support for responses to the 2017 Tubbs Fire and 2018 Camp Fire in California. As we concluded in a recently published study of burned areas, communities need to upgrade building codes to keep wildfires from causing widespread contamination of drinking water systems. They also need to act more aggressively to protect residents from possible toxic exposure immediately after fires. How Wildfires Poison Water Systems After both the 2017 Tubbs Fire in California’s Sonoma and Napa counties and the 2018 Camp Fire in Butte County, California, drinking water tests revealed a plethora of acutely toxic and carcinogenic pollutants. Water inside homes was not safe to use – or even to treat. By Andrew Whelton & Caitlin Proctor

  • Blacks Should Aim for – and Seek to Understand — the Stars “We all have the right to know the universe,” said Chanda Prescod-Weinstein, a Theoretical Physicist and Feminist Theorist at the University of New Hampshire and author of the soon to be released book, “The Disordered Cosmos: A Journey into Dark Matter, Spacetime, and Dreams Deferred.” Prescod-Weinstein does draw ethical lines in her scholarship. “I don’t particularly support people going off and doing weapons development. That’s not my ministry,” she said.

  • Black Lesbian Intellectuals Shined Light on HIV/AIDS Epidemic In the wake of the HIV-AIDS epidemic of a generation ago, Black intellectuals argued that “until we eliminate structural inequalities, we’re not going to eliminate the health disparities in medicine, particularly for Black people,” said Darius Bost, a professor of Ethic Studies at the University of Utah. Bost authored an article titled, “Black Lesbian Feminist Intellectuals and the Struggle Against HIV/AIDS.” Just as Blacks are dying from Covid-19 at twice the rate of whites, Black mortality rates from HIV/AIDS soared amidst silence, ignorance, deep prejudice and government neglect. Black lesbians brought intellectual and political clarity to the fight against the epidemic and its underlying causes, said Bost.

  • Reparations and Anti-Police Torture Demands Produced Results in Chicago The young Black people that charged the US government with genocide at a UN conference in Geneva, Switzerland in 2014 helped set the stage for local legislation “for some form of apology and reparations for the long legacy of police torture in Chicago,” said Toussaint Losier, professor of African American Studies at the University of Virginia. Losier is author of an article titled “A Human Right to Reparations: Black People and Police Torture and the Roots of the 2015 Chicago Reparations Ordinance,” a bill that granted some monetary compensation for victims of police torture and required public schools to include police torture in the curriculum.

There’s a Pattern of Corporate Media Censoring News About Wall Street Banks’ Crimes There are two opposing narratives living side by side in the United States: independent journalists and researchers have documented how the behemoth banks on Wall Street are as crooked as ever while the Federal Reserve Chairman, Jerome Powell, repeatedly tells Congress and the press that these banks are a “source of strength” in this economic crisis. (Never mind that the Fed is flooding these banks with trillions of dollars in cumulative loans at less than 1 percent interest.) Corporate-owned mainstream media, that is dependent on financing from these same banks, prefers the Fed’s alternative version of reality. By Pam Martens and Russ Martens

As COVID-19 Deaths Approach One Million: WHO Condemns Governments’ Failure to Prepare For Pandemic The pandemic has exposed the contradiction between the highly integrated nature of modern society and the outmoded and  irrational nation-state system of capitalism.  A report issued last week by the World Health Organization (WHO) makes clear that governments the world over were warned for years of the danger of a global pandemic with the exact characteristics of COVID-19 and did virtually nothing to prepare for or work to prevent such an outbreak. The report was issued by the Global Preparedness Monitoring Board, an organization run jointly by the WHO and the World Bank to monitor international readiness to combat mass outbreaks of infectious diseases. It states at the outset: “Never before has the world been so clearly forewarned of the dangers of a devastating pandemic, nor previously had the knowledge, resources and technologies to deal with such a threat. Yet, never before has the world witnessed a pandemic of such widespread and destructive social and economic impact.” By Bryan Dyne
