Quotes:

Predicting the coming catastrophe if the mode of production does not change, Rachel Carson wrote in The Sea Around Us: “It is a curious situation that the sea, from which life first arose, should now be threatened by the activities of one form of that life. But the sea, though changed in a sinister way, will continue to exist; the threat is rather to life itself.”

Fidel Castro expressed the urgency of these problems in his speech to the Earth Summit in Rio De Janeiro in 1992. He opened with these words: “An important biological species is in danger of disappearing due to the fast and progressive destruction of its natural living conditions: mankind. We have now become aware of this problem when it is almost too late to stop it.   It is necessary to point out that consumer societies are fundamentally responsible for the brutal destruction of the environment. They arose from the old colonial powers and from imperialist policies which in turn engendered the backwardness and poverty, which today afflicts the vast majority of mankind. . . .  “Now that the alleged threat of communism has disappeared and there are no longer any more excuses for cold wars, arms races, and military spending, what is blocking the immediate use of these resources to promote the development of the Third World and fight the threat of the ecological destruction of the planet? Let selfishness end. Let hegemonies end. Let insensitivity, irresponsibility, and deceit end. Tomorrow it will be too late to do what we should have done a long time ago.”

Evictions and Foreclosures  Welcome to 2020 America’s Cities or Rural Countryside There are those who believe that by 2021, the eviction pandemic will be one of the most persistent and damaging problem that facing the people of the United States and their elected officials. This problem is just beginning and the unemployment numbers are climbing, but worse, the underemployment figures are going to be climbing as well. In the time of the Covid-19 pandemic, everything seems to be collapsing, financial, economic, and political. The rich, however, are making out like the veritable bandits they are. By John Funiciello

Nuclear Alert: NRC & Nuke Safety In the Time of COVID-19 First off, we would like to preface this by saying that the world simply cannot afford a meltdown or nuclear disaster on top of the already traumatic times wrought by Pandemic 2020. Did you know that nuclear plants close for scheduled refueling every 18-months, meaning that 1/3 of the operating reactors are off-line each spring and fall? For the record, more than three dozen reactors had planned to do so in Spring 2020. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) defines this rather temporary closing as an outage. During these outages, used-up nuclear fuel is replaced, and critical safety inspections are performed. You may remember, that in early May, Maggie wrote extensively about the numerous safety risks to all of us if the nuclear industry continued operating these reactors during the COVID-19 Pandemic without implementing critical safety protocols and procedures. Along with 86 other organizations from all over the U.S., Fairewinds Energy Education nonprofit cosigned a letter to Vice President Pence and the COVID-19 Task Force detailing significant safety risks that must be addressed. You can read more about that letter and the increased safety hazards here. To date, we have received no response! By The FairewindsOil Companies Are Profiting From Illegal Spills. And California Lets Them. California may be a global leader on combating climate change, but state regulators have allowed companies to make millions from inland oil spills. by Janet Wilson,  and Lylla Younes

 Environment:

The melt is driven by a weather event, but that fits with a larger worrying trend. The ice sheet is getting darker thanks to dust and soot from forest fires, allowing it to absorb more heat.     In fact, it was soot from Russian fires that in part led to that 2012 meltdown.    Mark Parrington, a fire scientist working at Europe’s Copernicus Earth Observation Programme, told Earther winds haven’t been blowing north during this year’s fires. That could be sparing the ice sheet and sea ice from even more widespread melt, though he noted he hadn’t computed any specific numbers as far as how much fire-flung gunk was ending up on the ice.       Research has indicated that melts like the one in 2012 could become an annual occurrence by century’s end as temperatures rise and more forests burn, darkening the ice sheet further.  The unending heat in the Arctic is also keeping sea ice at record lows for this time of year.      This week’s blast furnace (by Arctic standards, anyways) will only further erode ice as it inches toward its annual minimum in September. And again, this is all in line with long-term trends that have seen the sea ice minimum shrink by roughly 13 percent per decade since the 1970s.   “Overall, this summer has not been surprising to me at all,” Zack Labe, a PhD candidate at the University of California, Irvine who studies the Arctic, told Earther. “We are seeing in real-time the effects of a warming Arctic with declines in sea ice area and thickness.”     The fact that none of this is surprising to scientists is hardly comforting news. — Are We Watching the Arctic Pass a Tipping Point This Summer?

The Age of Megafires: The World Hits a Climate Tipping Point Rising temperatures and worsening droughts mean that the world has entered an era of increasingly catastrophic wildfires. From Siberia to Australia to the western U.S., massive fires have consumed millions of acres this year and spawned fire-generated tornados and other phenomena rarely seen before. Scientists say the world has entered a perilous new era that will demand better ways of fighting wildfires. By Ed StruzikSmoke from west coast wildfires has drifted to New York and Washington DC Unprecedented fires have burned some 4.5m acres and smoke has made west coast air quality among the worst in the world Smoke from wildfires in the western US has drifted as far east as New York and Washington DC, with residents there observing hazy skies and unusual sunrises. Skies above the US capital have taken on a hazy din. New York Metro Weather predicted that murky air seen in New York City this week would become more even pronounced throughout Tuesday. The Climate Crisis is a National Security Threat to the US. We Already See the Effects National security leaders view climate change as a ‘threat multiplier’ that makes the homeland vulnerable Climate change is not a distant problem for future generations to worry about. Instead, the dangers of climate change are touching the lives of more Americans with each passing day. As the historic wildfires, hurricanes, floods, heatwaves and storms hitting the country this summer demonstrate, these crises are getting more frequent and more intense as the global temperature rises. Scientists tell us that the longer we delay transitioning to a clean, renewable economy, the more intense the impacts and the closer we come to reaching dangerous climate tipping points. Delay, Distract, and Derail’: New Report Reveals How Plastic Polluters Have Avoided Regulation Worldwide for Decades “This report is a damning exposé of the tactics employed by the plastics industry and shines a welcome light on the shadowy world of corporate lobbying.”. . . The report—titled “Talking Trash: The Corporate Playbook of False Solutions,”—exposes how Coca-Cola, Colgate-Palmolive, Danone, Mars Incorporated, Mondelēz International, Nestlé, PepsiCo, Perfetti Van Melle, Procter & Gamble, and Unilever deploy “tactics to undermine legislation in individual countries are in fact part of a global approach by Big Plastic to ensure that the corporations most responsible for the plastic crisis evade true accountability for their pollution.”  By Lisa Newcomb

Talking Trash: The Corporate Playbook of False Solutions                 Excutive Summary

This report investigates industry tactics in the face of an unprecedented plastic pollution crisis and growing public pressure to address it. Spanning 15 countries and regions across five continents, our global investigation reveals how – behind the veil of nice-sounding initiatives and commitments – the industry has obstructed and undermined proven legislative solutions for decades.stic-clogged oceans and rivers We have critically analysed voluntary commitments from the biggest plastic polluters, dissected the most prominent group initiatives (some of them championed by governments and NGOs) and revealed how companies across the plastic supply chain – from the oil industry to consumer brands and retailers – really act behind the scenes.                 We reveal industry tactics to distract, delay and derail legislation that are being used by corporations and industry associations in countries around the world. Country case studies show that companies have used their voluntary initiatives, such as commitments to recycling and ocean clean-ups, as a tactic to distract consumers and governments, while behind the scenes they vigorously lobby to delay and derail ambitious legislation.                                                                                                                    Lobbying to defend the interests and profits of polluting companies is conducted through little-known trade associations and away from public scrutiny, while our health and planet suffer the consequences.

The Fed Announces New Bank Stress Tests: Will Look at What Would Happen if a Major Counterparty Defaulted At the time the Fed released the results of its bank stress tests in June, it announced that because of the pandemic and unprecedented economic downturn, it would require additional stress testing of the biggest banks later this year. This afternoon, the Fed released those plans. Among the various hypothetical scenarios that the banks will have to perform against, 13 of the banks with significant trading operations will have to consider what would happen if a major counterparty blew up. The banks that will have to submit outcomes under this scenario include: Bank of America, Bank of New York Mellon, Barclays US, Citigroup, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank USA, Goldman Sachs, HSBC, JPMorgan Chase, Morgan Stanley, State Street, UBS, and Wells Fargo. The Fed will release bank-specific results before the end of the year. By Pam Martens and Russ Martens

Education, Health, Science, and Welfare:

The government of the United States can pass laws in a few days to spend tens of trillions of dollars for war and the bailout of Wall Street and the bankers. Yet, those who pass universal healthcare for  themselves, but they cannot spend even one trillion dollars for universal health for those who are ‘governed’! This is what is considered, by the powers to be,  a democracy and part of the democratic way. — Roland Sheppard, Let the People  Vote on Healthcare
