Quotes of the Day:

Leon Trotsky foretold the ‘Partnership’ Between the Trade Bureaucracy and the Boss:  From Leon Trotsky and the Iron Heel: One must accentuate especially the role which Jack London attributes  to the labor bureaucracy and to the labor aristocracy in the further fate of mankind. Thanks to their support, the American plutocracy not only succeeds in defeating the workers’ insurrection but also in keeping its iron dictatorship during the following three centuries. We will not dispute with the poet the delay which can but seem to us too long. However, it is not a question of Jack London’s pessimism, but of his passionate effort to shake those who are lulled by routine, to force them to open their eyes and to see what is and what approaches. The artist is audaciously utilizing the methods of hyperbole. He is bringing the tendencies rooted in capitalism: of oppression, cruelty, bestiality, betrayal, to their extreme expression. He is operating with centuries in order to measure the tyrannical will of the exploiters and the treacherous rôle of the labor bureaucracy. But his most “romantic” hyperboles are finally much more realistic than the bookkeeper-like calculations of the so-called “sober politicians.” It is easy to imagine with what a condescending perplexity the official socialist thinking of that time met Jack London’s menacing prophecies. If one took the trouble to look over the reviews of The Iron Heel at that time in the German Neue Zeit and Vorwärts, in the Austrian Kampf and Arbeiterzeitung, as well as in the other socialist publications of Europe and America, he could easily convince himself that the thirty-year-old “romanticist” saw incomparably more clearly and farther than all the social-democratic leaders of that time taken together. But Jack London bears comparison in this domain not only with the reformists. One can say with assurance that in 1907 not one of the revolutionary Marxists, not excluding Lenin and Rosa Luxemburg, imagined so fully the ominous perspective of the alliance between finance capital and labor aristocracy. This suffices in itself to determine the specific weight of the novel.

Launch of Climate Justice Charter: Eco-feminists Speak

United States:

The United States is not a Democracy (A government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly)! Only the 1%, through their ownership of the Reublicrats and who profit from war and the war budget, vote for War and the war budget — A policy, which Gore Vidal called a  Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace. — The 99% Should Decide On War — Not Just The 1% Who Profit From War!  Under a Democracy, The 99% would have the right to vote on the policy of Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace! The United States takes from the poor and gives to the Rich. Rax the Rich!  — They Can Afford To Pay!

Bendib: Stealing the ElectionThe U.S. is Determined to Make Julian Assange Pay for Exposing the Cruelty of Its War on Iraq On September 7, 2020, Julian Assange will leave his cell in Belmarsh Prison in London and attend a hearing that will determine his fate. After a long period of isolation, he was finally able to meet his partner—Stella Moris—and see their two sons—Gabriel (age three) and Max (age one)—on August 25. After the visit, Moris said that he looked to be in “a lot of pain.” The hearing that Assange will face has nothing to do with the reasons for his arrest from the embassy of Ecuador in London on April 11, 2019. He was arrested that day for his failure to surrender in 2012 to the British authorities, who would have extradited him to Sweden; in Sweden, at that time, there were accusations of sexual offenses against Assange that were dropped in November 2019. Indeed, after the Swedish authorities decided not to pursue Assange, he should have been released by the UK government. But he was not. By Vijay Prashad

South African Movement Adopts Climate Justice Charter Mass grassroots campaign calls for system change now and for a climate justice deal that ends the suffering of the most vulnerable and oppressed  “As Africans, we live together on a vast and beautiful continent where the human story began. All of us are linked to the first human who walked upright, dreamed, thought and co-existed with plants, animals, rivers, oceans and forests. Today this common humanity and its future is in serious danger. South Africa cannot ignore this challenge. The continued use of oil, gas and coal to power our economy and society is making our world unlivable for all life.” That paragraph opens the new Climate Justice Charter, adopted on August 28 by an mass online assembly of activists in South Africa. They describe the document as “a signpost; a trumpet call, to move all of us in the direction of system change now and for a Climate Justice Deal that ends the suffering of the most vulnerable and oppressed.”Civil Rights/ Black Liberarion:

  • White Capitalist Law vs “Uncontrollable Blackness”  The United States “criminalizes Black Americans,” but Black men “are not looking to be controlled” by this racist system, said Douglas Flowe, an historian at Washington University,

Labor:

They called for demonstrations in the nation’s capital and in other cities against union busting. But   they covered up the partnership of Democrats and Republicans with the nation’s employers to break unions, to make picketing illegal, etc..  They developed new theories to cover up their bankruptcy.   The code words were:   “We can’t win strikes anymore; we need new strategies—the old ways don’t work,” etc..Out   of these echoes of doom, a new strategy, the “Corporate Campaign” and the concept of building a partnership between management and labor was born. They developed the “two-tier” wage system whereby lower wages and worse working conditions were negotiated for new workers entering the industry. In this manner, the AFL-CIO sold out the next generations of workers before they ever went to work. They also began developing other strategies to avoid strikes and risk the loss of their treasuries. The so-called International Unions pledged to the government and their employers to police any local areas that did not follow their program of wage cuts and “productivity increases” (speedup). In the process, the International Unions consolidated their policies. —The Fall of the Trade Unions

The ‘Partnership’ in Action!:  Stop the UAW-Management Cover-Up Of COVID-19 In The Auto Plants! The Autoworker Rank-and-File Safety Committee Network is a national organization of workers throughout the auto industry who have organized to oppose the unsafe return to work by the auto companies and the United Auto Workers. Email the WSWS Autoworker  newsletter atautoworkers@wsws.org to learn more and get involved today. The Autoworker Rank-and-File Safety Committee Network demands an end to the outrageous cover-up by management and their UAW accomplices of the spread of COVID-19 cases in the auto plants.Last week, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), under pressure from the viciously anti-worker Trump administration, issued new guidelines stating that people exposed to the coronavirus who do not yet show symptoms “do not necessarily” need to be tested, even as COVID-19 continues to spread throughout our workplaces and communities. The Robber Barons Have Been Busy:

Wall Street’s Felon Banks to Go Live With Their Own Stock Exchange This Month Members Exchange (MEMX), a brand new stock exchange, has announced that it will begin live trading of select stocks for the first time on September 21 with a full phase-in on September 29. Criminal histories are, apparently, no barrier to running a stock exchange in the United States to the deeply conflicted way of thinking of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which issued its approval to operate the exchange on May 5. World:

After the Beirut Explosion, Disaster Capitalism Has Lebanon in Its Sights The explosion that devastated Beirut was an indictment of the parties that have misruled Lebanon for decades. Now, however, those parties are using the disaster as a pretext to deepen neoliberal policies, with French leader Emmanuel Macron and the IMF egging them on. On August 4, 2020, an explosion of unprecedented magnitude in Lebanon’s history occurred in the port of Beirut. It left more than 180 people dead, including Lebanese, Syrians, and other nationalities; more than 6,500 injured and 300,000 homeless. Dozens of people also remain missing, and entire districts of the Lebanese capital have been devastated. The explosion devastated large parts of the port of Beirut, which received more than 70 percent of the value of the country’s imported goods in 2019. It also destroyed Lebanon’s strategic grain reserve. The material damage amounts to billions of dollars: the Lebanese authorities have put forward an estimate of $15 billion. — A Deepening Crisis  — The explosion has made an already dire socio-economic situation unimaginably worse, after the economic crisis which developed in October 2019 and the effects of the pandemic. The pandemic drove the poverty rate to around 55 percent and increased unemployment to over 35 percent. by Joseph Daher

Education, Health, Science, and Welfare:

The government of the United States can pass laws in a few days to spend tens of trillions of dollars for war and the bailout of Wall Street and the bankers. Yet, those who ‘:’, pass universal healthcare for themselves, but they cannot spend even one trillion dollars for universal health for those who are ‘governed’! This is what is considered, by the powers to be,  a democracy and part of the democratic way. — Roland Sheppard, Let the People  Vote on Healthcare

Profits Before People’s Health/lives: When It Come to Profits, Capitalists Have No Ethics!    Defying ‘Logic and the Law,’ HHS Inspector General Allows Trump’s Vaccine Czar to Maintain Big Pharma Investments The IG has given a green light for Slaoui to use his public office for self-enrichment, a practice that has become frighteningly common within the Trump administration.” Ethics watchdogs on Wednesday slammed a ruling by the Health and Human Services Department’s inspector general, who decided this week that Moncef Slaoui, a former pharmaceutical executive now heading the Trump administration’s coronavirus vaccine task force, does not have to disclose or divest his investments in the industry. ‘Nonsensical and Madness’: Outrage After Trump Excludes US From WHO-Backed Global Vaccination Cooperation Pact The administration’s latest decision regarding vaccines and global cooperation denounced as “more self-inflicted damage.” Provoking a flurry of critical reactions from health experts and lawmakers, the Trump administration announced Tuesday afternoon that it will not participate in the “global effort to develop, manufacture, and equitably distribute a coronavirus vaccine, in part because the World Health Organization is involved”—a decision the Washington Post said “could shape the course of the pandemic and the country’s role in health diplomacy” going forward. By Kenny Stancil

Trump the Child Killer!: United States: School Teachers – Strike for Our Lives Against Disaster Capitalism! Despite record-breaking highs of COVID-19 new cases this summer, Donald Trump and Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos have pushed hard for schools to reopen in person this fall.  On July 10, Trump tweeted: >Now that we have witnessed it on a large scale basis, and firsthand, Virtual Learning has proven to be TERRIBLE compared to In School, or On Campus, Learning. Not even close! Schools must be open in the Fall. If not open, why would the Federal Government give Funding? It won’t!!” A few weeks later, the president’s wish came true. As schools began to reopen across several states in early August, pictures of hallways packed with students, many without masks, went viral. Unsurprisingly, this led to a new surge of contagion. In the past week, more than 2,000 students, teachers, and staff members have been quarantined as a result of at least 230 new confirmed cases across five states, according to a CNN report. This has contributed to a staggering 90% increase in COVID-19 infections among children in the US over the last four weeks.  By Elroy N. There has Been a 90% Increase in Covid-19 Cases in US Children in the Last Four Weeks, Report Says As the nation focuses on safety issues around going back to school during the pandemic, a new report found a sharp increase in the number of Covid-19 cases among children in the United States.
