Not S0 ‘Baffling’ — They Know who Pays Them!: The Democrats’ Baffling Silence as Millions of Americans Lose Their Health Insurance Five million have lost coverage amid the pandemic—a number that’s expected to triple by year’s end. But the party leadership isn’t reacting as though it’s a crisis. One of the many things that made the United States uniquely vulnerable to the coronavirus pandemic is the relationship between health care and employment in this country. About half of all Americans have employer-provided insurance; if you don’t, you are left to a mass of overlapping state and federal programs, though depending on where you live, you might find none of them overlap with you. It has been clear from the start that this patchwork health care nonsystem would cause unique problems fighting the coronavirus, and people are undoubtedly dead directly because of these problems. Months into the pandemic, the twin crises of Covid-19 and gaps in insurance are compounding each other: A new report from Families USA suggests that more than five million people have lost their insurance already; another report, from the Urban nstitute, predicts another 10 million will lose their coverage by the end of the year.
The Ugly Terror of a Fascist Abyss Lurks in the Background of This Pandemic There are lessons to be learned regarding how history is reproduced in the present. First, there is the Trump administration’s caging of children on the southern border. Second, there is Trump’s threat to use “dominating force” and unleash the National Guard and police upon demonstrators peacefully resisting police violence against people of color. Louie Giglio, pastor of Passion City Church in Atlanta, was met with criticism this week after citing “the blessing of slavery” for providing the framework for the privileges white Americans enjoy today. Giglio also suggested using the phrase “white blessings” instead of “white privilege.” By Tanasia Kenney

Science Session: Thawing Arctic Permafrost–Regional and Global Impacts Temperatures across the Arctic are increasing two to four times faster than the global average. The dramatic consequences that are already apparent include reduction of sea-ice cover, accelerating loss of land ice from glaciers and the Greenland Ice Sheet, proliferating wildfires, and—the topic of this panel—ongoing heating and thawing of the permafrost that underlies most of the land area of the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions across the globe. Permafrost thaw is a direct threat to buildings, roads, and pipelines, and it can greatly accelerate erosion along rivers and coastlines with severe consequences for communities located there. But an impact with much wider consequences is the release of carbon dioxide and methane by the decomposition of previously frozen organic matter, affecting the rate of growth of global warming and all of its impacts everywhere.

Shadow Government Statistics Flash Commentary, Issue No. 1443 Headline Second-Quarter 2020 GDP Will See Collapsing Quarterly and Annual Real Gross Domestic Activity, Followed by Some Third-Quarter Rebound in a Relatively Flat Recovery. The best coincident indicator I have found for the quarterly Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the theoretical broadest measure of U.S. Economic Activity, is the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS) Household Survey of ―employed‖ individuals. Tables I and II show the ―employed‖ activity versus headline GDP activity into First-Quarter 2020.
