The rate of skeleton formation, known as calcification, is already likely to have been affected, resulting in slower growth rates and weaker coral structures. However, the impact of acidification is likely to vary between coral species and between organisms. Time is Not on Our Side in Libya Ahmed, who lives in Tripoli, Libya, texts me that the city is quieter than before. The army of General Khalifa Haftar—who controls large parts of eastern Libya—has withdrawn from the southern part of the capital and is now holding fast in the city of Sirte and at the airbase of Jufra. Most of Libya’s population lives along the coastline of the Mediterranean Sea, which is where the cities of Tripoli, Sirte, Benghazi, and Tobruk are located. Haftar, who was once an intimate of the United States’ Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), is now prosecuting a seemingly endless and brutal war against the United Nation’s recognized Government of National Accord (GNA) based in Tripoli and led by President Fayez al-Sarraj. To make matters more confusing, Haftar takes his legitimacy from another government, which is based in Tobruk, and is formed out of the House of Representatives (HOR). By Vijay Prashad

Although they are operating under the aegis of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the truth is it is the Executive Branch that issued their orders. If that branch is headed by someone who believes in the rule of law, the likelihood of the current operation in Portland occurring would be considerably less. Environmental Health Leadership on Climate Solutions Amidst COVID-19 We are orienting ourselves to a new world. We are amidst a global pandemic and economic contraction, and are immediately concerned about our families, communities, and futures. As our perspectives are narrowed, however, by the urgency of COVID-19, our other big challenges, especially the climate health emergency, have not gone away. If we look at addressing these challenges in tandem, the COVID-19 crisis provides useful guidance for addressing our climate health emergency. The stimulus money we are indebting ourselves with has the potential to go a long way to solving climate change. Comprehensive COVID-19 and economic solutions with a longer-term perspective can lead us to climate solutions—a more prosperous, healthy, thriving, and just America. It can reignite the true spirit of America’s leadership. Environmental health professionals have a critical role to play in climate leadership, especially at the local level. They are a trusted group of messengers who understand the science, as well as health impacts. Solutions to climate change lie in resiliency and adaptation initiatives in local governments, in food safety specialists adapting the field to prevent contamination and shortages, and working professionals bringing this message to their elected officials at all levels of government. Those of us who can continue to work on climate solutions during this time must. The consequences of inaction are too high!

Health Care Workers’ Complaints Show the Morbid Dangers They Face During COVID During the darkest days of the Covid-19 pandemic, with thousands dying every day, America relied on a select few essential workers to keep society running, like postal workers, grocery workers and meat packers — all industries that have seen, together, hundreds of Covid-related deaths among workers. Chief among them are nurses, on the front lines of the pandemic, who have put their lives on the line to intubate disease victims and provide lifesaving medical care. Since the pandemic began, over 500 healthcare workers in the United States have died from the virus. But these workers who we rely on so deeply — dubbed “warriors” by President Donald Trump and “heroes” by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell — continue to work under hostile management and in dangerous workplaces that make the disease even more contagious and deadly. Catch and Kill: The Protection Racket Used by Trump, Weinstein, Epstein and Wall Street When it comes to the crime families of New York, they literally do catch and kill people who can’t be trusted to keep the secrets of their criminal operations. When it comes to the superrich in New York, they’re more inclined to “catch and kill” the story, rather than the accuser. (Jeffrey Epstein’s untimely death last year may be an exception.) On October 11, 2017, Jim Rutenberg, writing for the New York Times about the aiders and abettors to Harvey Weinstein’s sexual assaults, explained the catch and kill strategy as follows:“There is also another dynamic at play, involving something akin to a protection racket. The UK’s Sinking Brexit Ship Boris Johnson and his Tory colleagues are playing a game that is doomed to fail where the twin threats of the Covid pandemic and Brexit are concerned. As the UK careens towards a No Deal Brexit, the “message” is that the economic and social disaster caused by a No Deal Brexit is really to be attributed to the pandemic, while another “message” is that the country will be “back to normal” by Christmas with regard to the pandemic, leaving the decks miraculously clear for a mighty effort to stem the calamitous No Deal Brexit. “It is my strong and sincere hope”, BoJo Johnson told a Downing Street press conference, that the virus will be under such strong control that the country could see “a significant return to normality” from November.
