Incidentally, the recent trial of remdesivir for Ebola in the Congo refuted earlier, methodologically inferior studies, and suggested that other treatments were in fact superior to remdesivir for use in Ebola virus disease. This is not to say that the drug’s effectiveness, or lack thereof, in treating Ebola can be used as evidence for how it may fare with regards to COVID-19 — a completely different disease process. However, the story of a novel treatment which showed promise in early studies, only to prove disappointing in later, more rigorous ones is worth keeping in mind as the science unfolds for remdesivir’s use in COVID-19. Like all physicians, I yearn to tell patients like the one I described that, indeed I do have a medicine to give you. But I want to know that its indication is based on medical science and not corporate greed or panicked imprudence. Tyson is a Repeat Offender Even though 1,000 workers at Tyson’s slaughterhouse in Waterloo, IA have tested positive for the coronavirus, it has reopened. Tyson has said last week it would begin slaughtering pigs. The company promised that workers would receive daily screenings and access to nurse practitioners but many who can transmit the coronavirus are asymptomatic. At two other Tyson Iowa plants, 956 workers have tested positive. There have not been any reports since that November report until the latest one from the Fed which was released last week and dated May 2020. The new report carries this headline: “The banking industry came into 2020 in a healthy financial position.” This is part of the Fed’s strategy to lay its abysmal failure to supervise the mega Wall Street banks at the door of the coronavirus pandemic. One hour before the stock market opened, the Bureau of Labor Statistics had reported the worst U.S. unemployment figure since the Great Depression (14.7 percent) along with the staggering loss of 20.5 million jobs in just the month of April. Within the first half hour of trading, the Dow was up more than 300 points. It then added to those gains in afternoon trading. None of the explanations offered by mainstream media to explain the incongruous stock trading were accurate. It was not because the stock market had anticipated worse or that the market was rallying because it thought the worst of the economic fallout was behind us. It was because the one emergency funding facility that the Federal Reserve has quietly ramped up more than any other, its Foreign Central Bank Liquidity Swap Lines, was working its magic on Friday.
