In reaction, public health officials have been adjusting their models to reflect what is likely to be a rapid spread of new infections. The New York Times obtained a leaked document from the Federal Emergency Management Agency that projects a massive increase in the daily death toll, from 1,750 to 3,000 a day, and suggests we may see as many as 200,000 deaths by June 1. Ignorance Is Brewing a Second Wave of Covid-19 A number of Americans are discrediting freedom by the irresponsible way they are acting in its name. I have in mind those attending in closely packed crowds “freedom rallies” in protest against social distancing, closedowns, and whatever else authorities are doing in the effort to lower the infection rate in order that steps can be taken toward reopening.  I have in mind also those in dense crowds protesting closure of California beaches.  If there are infected persons among these protesters, the consequence of the protesters will be to spread the virus and delay any reopening of economy and beaches. Those who are insisting that it is their right to go about as they please without a mask or any precaution are demonstrating their complete lack of social responsibility.  Their behavior affects other people, and they most certainly have no more right to infect others than they do to go around with a gun shooting people.  No one has a Constitutional right to infect other people! America’s Cash Assistance Program Appears Dead When People Need It Most  Temporary Assistance For Needy Families, or TANF, is forgotten in the government’s coronavirus relief efforts. In March, congressional leaders and top White House officials negotiated a coronavirus relief package that included up to $1,200 in direct cash payments to most Americans and a $600 weekly increase in unemployment benefits for four months.  But they completely left out a preexisting program that’s meant to give cash assistance to America’s most vulnerable. Temporary Assistance For Needy Families, or TANF, has played no role in the government’s coronavirus economic relief efforts, and Congress didn’t touch the program in its package of emergency funding. By Tara GolshanEnvironment:

‘We’re Modern Slaves’: How Meat Plant Workers Became the New Frontline in Covid-19 war News of the first Covid-19 death at the Tyson Foods poultry plant in Camilla, south-west Georgia, spread slowly. “It was like they were keeping a secret,” said Tara Williams, a 47-year-old worker at the plant, as she described her account of management’s response to the death of her colleague Elose Willis. “It took them about two weeks to just put a picture up, to acknowledge she had died.” Williams had worked alongside Willis in the “de-boning” section of the plant until she died on 1 April, aged 56. She had spent 35 years at the facility – five days a week, 10 hours a day, 100,000 slaughtered chickens a shift.

Should You Pare Back Your Exposure to Stocks? Yesterday, Disney, a component of the Dow Jones Industrial Average and a former darling of stock analysts, suspended its dividend. Unlike most companies that pay a quarterly dividend, Disney pays a semi-annual dividend. The company is suspending just the dividend it would have made in the first half of this year without comment as of now on what will happen to the dividend in the second half of the year. Disney’s prior CEO, Bob Iger, was paid a combined compensation of $193.3 million over the prior four years. He stepped down as CEO in February. By Pam Martens and Russ Martens

Venezuela Detains Ex-U.S. Special Forces After Failed Coup Venezuela has announced it has detained two former U.S. Special Forces soldiers who took part in a failed armed incursion aimed at toppling the government. On Monday, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro showed U.S. passports for the two men, identified as Airan Berry and Luke Denman. A former Green Beret named Jordan Goudreau has acknowledged the men were working with him in an attempt to detain Maduro. On Monday, Maduro accused the U.S. of being behind the plot.Health, Science, Education, and Welfare:

The government of the United States can pass laws in a few days to spend tens of trillions of dollars for war and the bailout of Wall Street and the bankers. Yet, those who ‘governn’, pass universal healthcare for themselves, but they cannot spend even one trillion dollars for universal health for those who are ‘governed’! Capitalism’s Voracious Appetite: Bodies are the Commodities The allure of capitalism has never been a clean or ethical one — he very roots are predicated on a system of continued growth and extraction, only becoming  less feudal and more “modern” with the advent of beliefs that technological advances could usher in continued input to help the system survive. This has been true is some ways, such as the advent of fracking, which was able to massively disrupt Hubbert’s peak (the bell curve expected to show the gradual diminished reserves of oil). That peak was extended like a covid graph 10 days after an evangelical beach party. The rub with all things extractive and unsustainable is that there is always inherent blow-back. Just because there is more petro-product to burn doesn’t mean those greenhouse gases won’t build up from actually burning them—there will be hell to pay. This is because the natural world has a way of slapping down hubris with an intangible, almost sentient response to the greed. By Kathleen Wallace
