They suggested to me the following brief reflections: Hitler and his propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels were not the first to figure out that if you were able to get ahold of a prominent means of disseminating information, you could persuade large numbers of people to accept lies as facts. This came to be called “the Big Lie technique.” Today big capital has monopolized media to an extent not imagined even by the Nazis. And almost everything we call “news” (and “entertainment” too) is filtered through a handful of corporate-owned media. Don’t Bail Out Oil and Gas — Use the Money for Environmental Cleanup Instead Despite the evidence that the fossil fuel industry in the U.S. is not profitableand basically a giant money pit, President Trump tweeted last Tuesday that he has directed his cabinet to come up with a bailout plan for the floundering industry. The announcement came on the heels of a historic plunge in crude oil that sent prices deep into the red. Because of decreases in demand due to COVID-19 and a long history of being propped up solely by government funding, the fracking industry in the U.S. looks to be on the verge of collapse, with a huge wave of bankruptcies to come. As these fossil fuel companies go bankrupt or shutter completely, they shirk cleanup responsibilities – and the cost eventually falls on the taxpayer. By Sharon Zhang
US Oil and Gas Methane Emissions Are 15 Percent Higher Than We Thought Methane emissions are vastly undercounted at the state and national level because we’re missing accidental leaks from oil and gas wells, according to a new study. Methane is a greenhouse gas that, when initially released, is about 87 times more potent than carbon dioxide at driving global warming (it doesn’t last as long in the atmosphere, however, so when averaged over a century methane is about 30 timesmore potent than carbon dioxide at driving global warming). Methane causes about 25 percent of human-driven climate change according to the Environmental Defense Fund, and the oil and gas industry is the leading emitter of methane. GOP Governors Will Push Workers off Unemployment by Reopening Early The Department of Labor confirmed to VICE that workers who refuse to return to work out of a general fear for their safety will lose their CARES Act unemployment benefits. Republican governors in states like Georgia, Tennessee, and South Carolina have announced plans to begin reopening their states’ economies espite warnings by health officials that it’s too early to do so. The decisions mean that businesses may soon start calling people back into work before they feel safe, creating a coronavirus-specific dilemma: If people in those states are offered their jobs back, but refuse to take them out of fear for their safety, they will likely no longer qualify for unemployment benefits—even though they’re taking the same precautions as people one state over. Capitalism Can’t Be Repaired, Coronavirus Shows Its Huge Weaknesses Consider this absurdity: The U.S. government’s policy in the face of the current capitalist crash is to “return the economy to the pre-coronavirus normal.” What? In that “normal” system, private capitalists maximized profits by not producing the tests, masks, ventilators, beds, etc., needed when coronavirus hit. Profit-driven capitalism proved extremely inefficient in its response to the virus. Wealth already lost from the coronavirus far exceeds what it would have cost to prepare properly. In capitalism, a small minority—employers—makes all the key decisions (what, how, where to produce and how to use the proceeds) governing production and distribution of most goods and services. The majority—employees and their families—must live with the results of employers’ decisions but are excluded from making them. Why return to such an undemocratic “normal”?
