Vulture Capitalist Quote of the Day:

When I examine the trickle of data from states and counties on coronavirus patients, when I scrutinize the racial demographics of hot spots, when I study the survey data, it sure seems to me as if the viral pandemic is hitting people of color the hardest. Time and again, a state or county releases racial data. Time and again, those numbers reveal a sizable racial disparity. Time and again, black Americans are overrepresented among the infected and dead. America’s newest infection seems to be mating with America’s original infection, reproducing not life, but death.    In Michigan, black Americans comprise 14.1 percent of the state population, but an ungodly 40 percent of coronavirus deaths. In Washtenaw County, home to Ann Arbor, 48 percent of residents hospitalized with the coronavirus are black, though black people make up only 11 percent of the county. In Illinois, the infection rate among black Americans is twice their percentage of the state population. In North Carolina’s Mecklenburg County, which includes Charlotte, black people comprise 32.9 percent of the residents, but 43.9 of the confirmed coronavirus cases, as of March 30. In Milwaukee, black Americans make up 26 percent of the county, but nearly half of the infections and a maddening 81 percent of deaths as of Friday. — What the Racial Data Show

Vulture/Disaster Capitalism: Pharma-Funded Group Tied to a Top Trump Donor Is Promoting Malaria Drug to the President Founded by one of Trump’s top donors, the Job Creators Network has been pushing Trump to approve the use of hydroxychloroquine for treating COVID-19. A fight broke out among the White House coronavirus task force over the weekend regarding the potential use of anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine for COVID-19 patients.  According to a report from Axios, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci objected to task force members’ characterizations of the drug, saying that there was only anecdotal evidence of the drug’s effectiveness and cautioning that much more data is needed.

Seven Disturbing Facts About COVID-19 in Louisiana Virus Raging. Statewide Louisiana is second only to New York in deaths per 100,000 people with 582 reported as of April 7. Six parishes (counties) in the New Orleans area are in the top ten in deaths of all the counties in the nation: St. John the Baptist, Orleans, St. Charles, Jefferson, St. James and Plaquemines, according to the Wall Street Journal. Race. Louisiana is 32 percent African American. Yet 70 percent of COVID 19 deaths in Louisiana are of African Americans. “”These differences are produced by policy, not physiology,” Dillard Professor Amy Lesen told the Advocate. “They’re based on race and class bias in the health care system, access to health care and preventative care.” Similar disproportionate impacts have been observed in Chicago and Milwaukee. This shows the pandemic is following patterns of entrenched inequalities in economic and medical opportunities. By Bill Quigley

Black people are Overwhelmingly Dying From Coronavirus in Cities Across the US Black Americans are overwhelmingly dying of coronavirus at much higher rates compared to other Americans in some major cities, but most federal officials and states are not keeping track or releasing racial data on coronavirus victims, raising concerns about care for the nation’s most vulnerable populations.  By Deborah Barfield Berry

The Coronavirus Doesn’t Discriminate, But U.S. Health Care Showing Familiar Biases The new coronavirus doesn’t discriminate. But physicians in public health and on the front lines say that in the response to the pandemic, they can already see the emergence of familiar patterns of racial and economic bias. In one analysis, it appears doctors may be less likely to refer African Americans for testing when they show up for care with signs of infection. Why Black Americans Are At Higher Risk For Coronavirus Black Americans have more existing medical issues, less access to health care, and are more likely to work in unstable jobs — all factors that have made the coronavirus pandemic disproportionately hurt blacks more. While everyone is susceptible to Covid-19, black Americans are at higher risk, Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams said during an appearance on CBS This Morning on Tuesday. That racial disparity has been evident in early data on coronavirus deaths in Louisiana, Illinois, Michigan and New Jersey. The federal government has not tracked coronavirus by demographic groups, but Adams and American Medical Association President Dr. Patrice Harris suggested they begin to do so. By Eric Levenson

13,000 MA Carpenters Strike Over Coronavirus Concerns While Boston, Cambridge and some other cities have halted construction projects, the Baker administration has not issued a statewide order.  As many as 13,000 carpenters in Massachusetts were set to go on strike Monday over concerns that state and federal regulators aren’t doing enough to keep job sites safe from the spread of the new coronavirus. The North Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters, which represents about 10,000 workers in Massachusetts, ordered workers to strike beginning Monday. “In recent days as the number of COVID-19 confirmed cases and deaths has dramatically increased, it has become apparent that working on construction sites in Massachusetts is abnormally dangerous, and that continuing to work on construction sites poses an immediate threat of harm to the health and safety of my members and the public,” the council’s executive secretary Thomas J. Flynn wrote in a letter to members.  By Dave CopelandEconomy:

Wall Street’s Banks Could Profit by Millions on Coronavirus Deaths of Employees Wall Street’s Banks Could Profit by Millions on Coronavirus Deaths of EmployeesWall Street’s Banks Could Profit by Millions on Coronavirus Deaths of Employees If it sounds ghoulish, it’s because it is ghoulish. Some of the biggest banks on Wall Street have been intimidating their traders to come back to work despite an executive order from the Governor of New York State, Andrew Cuomo, ordering people to remain at home during the coronavirus outbreak unless they work for essential businesses like grocery stores, pharmacies and hospitals. New York State, home to Wall Street, is now the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak in the United States with 5,489 deaths as of today or 44 percent of all deaths from coronavirus in the entire United States. U.S. to Block Iran’s Request to IMF for $5 Billion Loan to Fight Coronavirus … The pandemic has torn through Iran, one of the worst-affected countries, and jolted an Iranian economy already reeling from the Trump administration sanctions under its “maximum pressure campaign.” Despite calls from some humanitarian groups and other nations to ease the sanctions, the administration has instead said it won’t relent in putting pressure on Tehran. Iran’s representative at the United Nations didn’t respond to a request for comment on the U.S. decision on IMF funding. Iranian officials have called the U.S. sanctions amid the pandemic “medical terrorism” and said U.S. offers of humanitarian assistance to help fight the coronavirus are “deceptions and lies.” As the IMF’s largest shareholder, the U.S. largely determines the fate of bailout requests, though technically IMF member countries could amass a majority of votes to approve Iran’s loan even with U.S. opposition. By Ian Talley in Washington and Benoit Faucon

Amid Plague, Sanctions are Genocide Sanctions have long been indefensible; now in the time of Covid-19, more so than ever. Nor are they some minor phenomena. Over a quarter of humanity lives under U.S. economic sanctions. That means millions of people lack untroubled access to food and medicines during a lethal pestilence. Thus in Iran, where the government fears millions of deaths from Covid-19, sanctions amount to genocide. Under ordinary circumstances, these embargoes are economic warfare. By putting Iran and Venezuela under economic siege even before the pandemic, the U.S. had murdered tens of thousands of those countries’ citizens. Yet most Americans seem unaware or unconcerned about this sadistic, criminal and murderous policy inflicted on millions in their name.By Eve Ottenberg

Capitalism’s cold calculus: Their profits or your life An open split has emerged within the Tories, between those who are desperate for business to return to normal; and those who are terrified of the backlash if private wealth is put above public health. We must fight to put lives before profits. “What, generally speaking, are the symptoms of a revolutionary situation?…Firstly, when there is a crisis, in one form or another, among the ‘upper classes’, a crisis in the policy of the ruling class, leading to a fissure through which the discontent and indignation of the oppressed classes burst forth.” Lenin, Collapse of the Second International, By Daniel Morley

Sanitising war crimes: Palestine, Israel and COVID–19 The coronavirus has led to shutdowns, movement restrictions, and shortages of medical supplies and food around the world. However, for one place in the world, this was the norm before the pandemic. The Gaza Strip, already under heavy restrictions and shortages since the beginning of the blockade 13 years ago, now must also contend with the threat of COVID-19. By Bilal Farah & Adam Zeineddine

Health, Science, Education, and Welfare:

The government of the United States can pass laws in a few days to spend tens of trillions of dollars for war and the bailout of Wall Street and the bankers. Yet, those who ‘governn’, pass universal healthcare for themselves, but they cannot spend even one trillion dollars for universal health for those who are ‘governed’! This is what is considered, by the powers to be,  a democracy and part of the democratic way. — Roland Sheppard, Let the People  Vote on Healthcare!
