Bat Coronaviruses in China Abstract

During the past two decades, three zoonotic coronaviruses have been identified as the cause of large-scale disease outbreaks⁻Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), and Swine Acute Diarrhea Syndrome (SADS). SARS and MERS emerged in 2003 and 2012, respectively, and caused a worldwide pandemic that claimed thousands of human lives, while SADS struck the swine industry in 2017. They have common characteristics, such as they are all highly pathogenic to humans or livestock, their agents originated from bats, and two of them originated in China. Thus, it is highly likely that future SARS- or MERS-like coronavirus outbreaks will originate from bats, and there is an increased probability that this will occur in China. Therefore, the investigation of bat coronaviruses becomes an urgent issue for the detection of early warning signs, which in turn minimizes the impact of such future outbreaks in China. The purpose of the review is to summarize the current knowledge on viral diversity, reservoir hosts, and the geographical distributions of bat coronaviruses in China, and eventually we aim to predict virus hotspots and their cross-species transmission potential. Quotes of the Day:

Extradition hearings are not held at Belmarsh Magistrates Court inside Woolwich Crown Court. They are always held at Westminster Magistrates Court as the application is deemed to be delivered to the government at Westminster. Now get your head around this. This hearing is at Westminster Magistrates Court. It is being held by the Westminster magistrates and Westminster court staff, but located at Belmarsh Magistrates Court inside Woolwich Crown Court. All of which weird convolution is precisely so they can use the “counter-terrorist court” to limit public access and to impose the fear of the power of the state.   One consequence is that, in the courtroom itself, Julian Assange is confined at the back of the court behind a bulletproof glass screen. He made the point several times during proceedings that this makes it very difficult for him to see and hear the proceedings. The magistrate, Vanessa Baraitser, chose to interpret this with studied dishonesty as a problem caused by the very faint noise of demonstrators outside, as opposed to a problem caused by Assange being locked away from the court in a massive bulletproof glass box.    Now there is no reason at all for Assange to be in that box, designed to restrain extremely physically violent terrorists. He could sit, as a defendant at a hearing normally would, in the body of the court with his lawyers. But the cowardly and vicious Baraitser has refused repeated and persistent requests from the defence for Assange to be allowed to sit with his lawyers. Baraitser of course is but a puppet, being supervised by Chief Magistrate Lady Arbuthnot, a woman so enmeshed in the defence and security service establishment I can conceive of no way in which her involvement in this case could be more corrupt.    It does not matter to Baraitser or Arbuthnot if there is any genuine need for Assange to be incarcerated in a bulletproof box, or whether it stops him from following proceedings in court. Baraitser’s intention is to humiliate Assange, and to instill in the rest of us horror at the vast crushing power of the state. The inexorable strength of the sentencing wing of the nightmarish Belmarsh Prison must be maintained. If you are here, you are guilty. — Your Man in the Public Gallery – Assange Hearing Day #1

There was much more from the defence. For the prosecution, James Lewis indicated he would reply in depth later in proceedings, but wished to state that the prosecution does not accept the court martial evidence as fact, and particularly does not accept any of the “self-serving” testimony of Chelsea Manning, whom he portrayed as a convicted criminal falsely claiming noble motives. The prosecution generally rejected any notion that this court should consider the truth or otherwise of any of the facts; those could only be decided at trial in the USA. Then, to wrap up proceedings, Baraitser dropped a massive bombshell. She stated that although Article 4.1 of the US/UK Extradition Treaty forbade political extraditions, this was only in the Treaty. That exemption does not appear in the UK Extradition Act. On the face of it therefore political extradition is not illegal in the UK, as the Treaty has no legal force on the Court. She invited the defence to address this argument in the morning. It is now 06.35am and I am late to start queuing, — Your Man in the Public Gallery – Assange Hearing Day #2

The Myth About Working Inside The Democratic Party And ‘Reforming It’. _ The Game is Rigged!   ‘You’ll See Rebellion’: Sanders Supporters Denounce Open Threats by Superdelegates to Steal Nomination “The Democrats might be able to stop Sanders, but in doing so they would destroy their party’s own electoral prospects.” Nearly 100 Democratic  uperdelegates told the New York Times in interviews this week that if Sen. Bernie Sanders does not arrive at the party’s 2020 convention in July with a majority of pledged delegates, they are willing to thwart the will of the plurality of primary voters—and potentially risk damaging Democrats’ chances of defeating President Donald Trump—in order to stop Sanders from winning the nomination. Tax the Rich! — They Can Afford it! ‘Rich People Have Profited Enough’: New Poll Shows Two-Thirds of Americans Support Wealth Tax to Combat Inequality Support for a wealth tax to combat persistent inequality in the U.S. is growing, according to a new poll released Wednesday by TheHill/HarrisX which found that just over two-thirds of Americans favor a tax on the wealthiest households. Sixty-seven percent of respondents—including majorities of Democrats and Independents—said there should be a wealth tax on billionaires, as Democratic presidential candidates Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) have proposed. A clear majority of Democrats, 85%, backed the proposal, along with 66% of independent voters. Nearly half of Republican respondents—47%—said they would support a wealth tax in the poll, which was conducted between February 23 and 24 among more than 1,000 registered voters and had a margin of error of 3%. The FBI Is Investigating Massive Embezzlement in Border Patrol The FBI is investigating the disappearance of some $500,000 from the coffers of the powerful union representing the country’s roughly 20,000 Border Patrol agents, said the organization’s national president, Brandon Judd. Judd said the probe is focused on identifying the individuals responsible for siphoning the money from the bank accounts of the union’s El Paso branch in recent years. “We know the FBI is looking at it,” said Judd, head of the National Border Patrol Council, which has forged a close alliance with President Donald Trump. Stopping State-sponsored Cyber Attacks It’s not only lone hackers waging cyber warfare, but also nation states sabotaging their opponents’ elections, resources and credibility. How does deep learning predict and prevent such attacks? Attackers infiltrate A developing country’s central bank, send fraudulent money transfer orders to the Federal Reserve in New York, and walk away with $81 million of that country’s cash. A nation’s health records are compromised, and hackers download the personal details of 1.5 million patients, including that of the country’s prime minister. An NGO discovers unauthorized activity in its global IT systems in one country, mobilizes its global security team and discovers that malware has been hiding inside its servers for weeks.Three completely different attacks, but they have one thing in common: all were later found to be the work of hackers working on behalf of—or even directly employed by—nation states.

A Third of Plants and Animals Risk Mass Extinction As planetary temperatures rise, the chances of species survival lessen. Mass extinction is coming. The challenge is to measure the loss. LONDON, 25 February, 2020 – Within 50 years, a third of all plant and animal species could be caught up in a mass extinction, as a consequence of climate change driven by ever-rising temperatures. What is new about this warning is the method, the precision, the timetable and the identification of a cause. And – entirely felicitously – support for the prediction is backed by a series of separate studies of individual species survival in a world rapidly warming because of human commitment to fossil fuels. Washington State is About to Kick Out the Bottled Water Industry Americans purchase some 50 billion bottles of water every year. That’s more than 95,000 a minute! All that water comes from our public water systems and groundwater. In other words, the bottled water industry is taking our water and selling it back to us.  Meanwhile, groundwater is facing depletion nationwide and millions of Americans drink unsafe tap water from systems that violate health standards. The U.S. is World’s Merchant of Death in Capitalism’s Great Race to the Bottom The U.S.-led arms trade and the Great Race to the Bottom are interconnected phenomena that cannot be fought separately. “The U.S.’ ascendency as the world’s merchant of death is primarily driven by the need to protect the benefactors of the Race to the Bottom through endless war.” Empire is the engine that drives the political economy of the United States. The U.S. empire, like all capitalist states, has as its sole purpose the maintenance of class exploitation. While few on any part of the U.S. political spectrum are willing to say the word, empire is a key concern for a ruling class that is committed to preserving the economic and political supremacy of capitalism in its late and terminal stages. Over the last forty years, U.S. capitalists have transformed the military apparatus into one of its largest and most profitable industries in the world. The U.S. State Department’s recently released World Military Expenditures and Arms Transfer  report lays bare the extent to which the U.S. capitalist economy has become a merchant of death in the Great Race to the Bottom. By Danny Haiphong, BAR Contributing EditorBernie Sanders and the Military Industrial Complex If Bernie Sanders keeps going along with the Russiagate propaganda, he will find himself “Trumped” by the War Party and unable to enact his agenda. “The spook state will push Bernie harder and harder about Russia.” No one on the left was more critical of Bernie Sanders during his 2016 presidential run than late Black Agenda Report Editor Bruce Dixon. However, after Bernie’s speech announcing that he planned to run again this year, Bruce asked me, “Did you see that?” I said, “No, not yet.” Then he said, “This is a whole new Bernie. Bernie 2.0. This is a Bernie who’s learned how to talk to Black people.” By Ann Garrison, BAR Contributing EditorCommunity Control of the Police: An Idea Whose Time Came and Never Left This policy paper makes the case for reviving the Black Panther Party program for community control of the police. “Pending transformation to a democratic society, community control of the police is an immediate reform we must demand.” Their [the police] real power is manifested in the organized guns and force. But we’re saying that the people in this community, the people in this country, don’t have any control over that organized guns, force, and power. We’re saying that the capitalist, the racist, and others have control over it. And we’re saying that we want to change it, that we want to revolutionize it, turn it over into the hands of the people, for a new process to occur. We’re saying we want community control. – Bobby Seale, Chicago Community Control of the Police Conference, June 1, 1973 By Howie HawkinsKobe Bryant Touched Many Lives, But Celebrity Worship is an Opiate Is big media really concerned for Kobe’s family, friends and community, or with Bryant’s corporate value as a black celebrity, an apolitical athlete and a commodity? “Black religious leaders, black media, academic and political leadership are failing the black masses.” To the detriment of humanity and black people specifically, an almost sacred reverence for athletes and entertainers, orchestrated by billionaire sports franchise owners, media conglomerates, sneaker manufacturers, lawyers, and agents is pervasive in black communities nationwide. This essay argues that sports, entertainment and celebrity culture manipulated by monopoly media conglomerates is, “the opioid of the masses of black people.” By Dante James Let’s Not Glorify the Law: The Slave Trade Used to Be Legal The law is a shaky foundation to rest on, particularly for Black people and other marginalized communities. “An assumption that the courts will deliver ‘justice” regularly ignores the fact that Black people have never known such a thing.” Throughout the history of Black America, progress has often required breaking the law. For this reason, it’s worth questioning why, in sanitized mainstream narratives (for example, those shared in schools and government functions during Black History Month), the story of Black struggle is often divorced from incendiary, illegal acts. Most Black people in the United States are descended from enslaved Africans, and being Black in this country has never been wholly separated from that history. In fact, it still haunts us daily as we navigate its afterlife. This is a legacy that was demarcated by restrictions that continually pierced the everyday experience of living. For many Black people during the time of slavery, to be free was illegal itself — and in many ways, that reality has extended into every era following “emancipation.” Since then, the necessity of extralegal acts has continued for a people still constantly being ensnared by a society stacked against them. Is Joe Biden Really More Electable? Could it be that electability, as applied to Biden, is some form of racial dog whistle? “Biden’s record of anti-black legislation explains why he would also be appealing to Trump supporters.” At this point in the race for the Democratic nomination for president, the most consistent claim made by supporters of Joe Biden is that Biden is the most electable candidate. This vague descriptor seems to be Biden’s only selling point. And have you noticed that no one ever gives an explanation as to what exactly gives him the edge of electability. The closest to an explanation that I’ve heard is that Biden is best suited to defeat Trump. This is usually offered as companion statement to the electability claim. It’s an equally vague statement and still begs the question — what makes him the most electable? By Thad BaltimoreThe Expanded Moms4Housing Bill Could Change the Whole Game Although the moms were evicted, their example inspired ground-breaking housing legislation for Oakland, California. “This bill has the potential to help thousands of Oaklanders not only to stay in our community, but also to build a stable and secure future here through a pathway to home ownership.” A movement that started with two mothers making a stand for their rights to be housed in an increasingly untenable market is growing into something with potential to positively impact countless Oakland residents.  By Broke-ass StuartFrom Peoples to Bynum: A Brief History of Jackson State’s Leadership Struggle Mississippi’s ability to sabotage Black public higher education is enhanced by the state’s power to choose compliant Negroes as administrators. “State college boards across the country continue to play musical chairs with HBCU presidents.” Dr. John A. Peoples was the last great President of “Thee I Love.”  That’s ironic for me to say because I’ve never liked the phrase “Thee I Love” and always preferred the older motto of “A Commitment to Academic Excellence.”  Be that as it may, since the removal of Peoples, the Jackson State Presidency has been filled with a steady flow of good, to subpar, to downright horrific presidents all chosen exclusively by the Mississippi State College Board better known as Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL).  Thus, in this moment of Dr. William Bynum having to resign as JSU President after being charged with procuring the services of a prostitute, one wonders if this could have been avoided if IHL would have, for once, listened to the JSU family of students, staff, faculty, administrators, and alumni who unanimously did not want Bynum as their president?  Bynum had already been given a vote of no confidence by the JSU Faculty Senate so it isn’t as if he was an outstanding leader before this moment.  To be clear, a vote of no confidence does not mean that one is an inept leader, but it does signify that there is a gap between where one is and the excellence one is striving to achieve. One would think that after not listening to the JSU family’s recommendation not to hire former JSU President Carolyn Meyers that IHL would have taken their advice regarding Bynum since Meyers did such a horrendous job, culminating in the loss of $25 million.  But, IHL remained tone-deaf to the advice of the JSU family and now finds itself conducting another search for a JSU President. By C. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) criticized Vice President Pence hours after President Trump said he would be putting him in charge of the administration’s response to the spread of the new coronavirus known as COVID-19. “Mike Pence literally does not believe in science,” she tweeted on Wednesday night. “It is utterly irresponsible to put him in charge of US coronavirus response as the world sits on the cusp of a pandemic. This decision could cost people their lives. Pence’s past decisions already have.” She also took aim at Pence’s handling of an HIV outbreak in Indiana during his time as governor of the state in another tweet, saying: “As governor, Pence’s science denial contributed to one of the worst HIV outbreaks in Indiana’s history.”  ‑— Ocasio-Cortez Knocks Pence: ‘Utterly Irresponsible to Put Him in Charge of US Coronavirus Response’

Coronavirus Pushes Trump to rely on Rxperts He has Long Maligned When President Trump sought to reassure a nation on edge over the coronavirus, he was flanked Wednesday evening at the White House by more than a half-dozen public health experts. But the very officials whose expertise the president is now counting on are part of the vast bureaucracy of scientists and other public servants that Trump has repeatedly maligned, ignored and jettisoned. Throughout his more than three years as president, Trump has obsessed, at times conspiratorially, over what he calls the “deep state” — the thousands of career government specialists in national security, intelligence, science and other areas whose expertise he shuns in part because he suspects they are disloyal saboteurs. And so, as the first case of coronavirus not tied to foreign travel was announced in California on Wednesday, Trump finds himself grappling with a crisis for which his record suggests he is particularly ill-suited to respond. At a moment that demands sobriety and honesty, Trump is a leader prone to hyperbole and falsehoods. As the financial markets and the public crave order and clarity, Trump has a penchant for creating chaos and confusion. And at a time when expertise is paramount, Trump has hollowed out the very government agencies responsible for the tasks at hand. By  Ashley Parker and Philip Rucker

Italy’s Response to the Coronavirus: Indiscriminate Measures and Fearmongering Public fear about the spread of Covid-19 (coronavirus) is justified, above all because the danger is not yet fully understood. In the face of a phenomenon still to be evaluated, it is right to use caution both in daily life and in social behaviour. However, the measures taken so far by the government and, subsequently, by the other administrative bodies, have failed to create awareness or take responsibility, but have whipped up fear and created passivity, while discharging most of the consequences of their measures on workers and the poor. Live updates: Fears grow of a coronavirus pandemic as markets stumble again; Japan shuts schools The rapid spread of the novel coronavirus raised the specter of a global pandemic as governments ramped up their emergency responses and financial markets slumped again Thursday, despite signs that the outbreak may be easing in China.U.S. markets fell sharply Thursday, after the first coronavirus case in the United States that could not be linked to foreign travel was confirmed. Azar says 40 labs in U.S. able to test for coronavirus, lab expert disputes number  At a hearing Thursday morning before the House Ways and Means Committee, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said that “at least 40” public health labs “should now be able” to perform the test with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention test kits, while a “newly manufactured CDC test” was expected to be sent to 93 public health labs “as soon as Monday.” Meanwhile, he said, a privately manufactured test could be sent to those same labs “as soon as tomorrow,” once the Food and Drug Administration clears it for use. However, Scott Becker, executive director of the Association of Public Health Laboratories, said that as of 9 a.m. Thursday, he was only aware of eight public health labs able to do the testing. He said that about 40 public health labs received guidance late Wednesday afternoon that would allow them to go ahead with tests using two of the three components, but that it would take some time for them to be ready to process samples.
