Time To Nationalize The “Privately owned ‘Public’ Utilities”!: Instead of Nationalizing Their Debts— Nationalize Their Assets!

Time To Nationalize The Privately owned ‘Public’ Utilities!: Instead of Nationalizing Their Debts— Nationalize Their Assets!

Originally, a “Robber Baron” was a noble who robbed travelers who passed through his land, in the latter part of the 19th century, this term was ascribed to U.S. capitalists or industrialist considered to have become wealthy by exploiting natural resources, corrupting legislators, or other unethical means.”

The energy monopolies were the foremost “Robber Barons”. Their price gouging led to many government officials to demand statification of electricity. A compromise was reached with the power companies to induce government regulation. Since then, energy costs were relatively controlled, the creation of “public utilities” stemmed the tide for public power, which still, where it is in place, provides cheaper and more reliable electricity and gas than private investor owned utilities.

In 1996, in a unanimous bi-partisan vote by the California politicians, amply funded by the the energy cartels, “deregulated” the power industry.

This freed the energy cartels to revert to their natural “Robber Baron” instincts. As the crisis has deepened, the governor and the legislature have worked out a scheme to give these robbers billions of dollars, partly with rate increases and tax dollar bailouts from the budget surplus and partly with borrowed money. Those who are gouged the most, the working people of California, through taxes and rate increases, will pay out billions to the energy companies and more billions to the banks in interest costs.

The end result will be less public funds for schools, hospitals and other needed programs, because the money will have gone to the energy give-away. So far, the power robber barons have reaped in more than $40 billion (and counting). in windfall profits.

After torturing the public with intermittent blackouts, the California Public Utilities Commission has approved a 160% Increase in monthly utility bills to feed the insatiable drive for increased profits by the energy cartels. Everyone in California knows there is no real power shortage. The Los Angeles public power companies and other public power companies have no shortage of power and lower rates for power.

The real reason for the rolling blackouts is that the energy companies are refusing to send power unless they can get what the traffic can bear!. . .

Now is the time for ‘Peter to pay Paul’ for the years of deregulation, differed maintenance, and crumbling pipes, etc.. We must oppose al schemes for us to pay a hefty price tag” for the differed maintenance brokered by the energy corporations. It is time to nationalize the Energy Cartels so that they can’t rob from us anymore!

It Is Time To Stop The Robber Barons!

WE SHOULD DEMAND:

  • No Bailouts, No Rate Increase! Reduce the rates to pre-crisis levels. The companies that created this crisis must not profit from it!
  • Power for use—not for Profit! End regressive power rates—the rich and the corporations pay less for power! Since energy has become essential for everyday living and the pursuit of happiness, everyone has a right to power!
  • Rates should be progressive and be based on income with no charge for households with less than $50,000 per year income!
  • Make the Robber Barons pay back what they stole—tax their profits 100%!
  • Open the books of all companies that supply or sell energy to California! The people of California have a right to know how they are being ripped off!
  • State Take-Over of Electricity! We must utilize eminent domain powers to seize ALL privately-owned energy generation plants and distribution grids and run them as a Public Power Authority to insure a steady power supply! (This means seizing the assets of the power companies/corporation!)
  • The $40 billion that the energy companies have ALREADY stolen is more than enough compensation!
  • Democratic Control of the Local/State/National PowerAuthority!
  • The new Power Authority must be run by representatives democratically elected by power workers and the public. The politicians have already betrayed us once—the solution is direct democratic control. The workers whoproduce the power and the majority of the people, the working class, are the ones who should be running the power system!
  • Urge trade unions and community organizations to adopt resolutions embodying the basic points advocated here. To work together with everyone opposed to fighting this robbery to arrive at a common set of demands that unites all working people and the poor!
  • Together We Can and Will Win!
