Michael Roberts: Food, Famine and War If anything proves that famine and food insecurity are man-made rather than due to vagaries of nature and the weather, it is the current food crisis that is putting millions globally close to starvation. The Russia-Ukraine war has highlighted the global food supply disaster but this was brewing well before the war. The food supply chain has been increasingly global. The Great Recession of 2008-9 began to disrupt that chain, based as it was on multi-national food companies controlling the supply from farmers across the world. These companies directed demand, generated the fertiliser supply and dominated much of the arable land. When the Great Recession struck, they lost profits, and so cut back on investment and increased pressure on food producers in the ‘Global South’. The cracks in these fundamentals of food supply were accompanied by rising oil prices, explosive demand for corn-based biofuels, high shipping costs, financial market speculation, low grain reserves, severe weather disruptions in some major grain producers, and an increased protectionist trade policies. This was the food ‘climate’ in the long depression up to 2019, before the pandemic struck.

Such weaponizing programs have helped embolden police officers to see themselves as warriors and citizens like George Floyd as enemy combatants, which helps explain the increased use of force during police encounters in these years. Additionally, in the last decade, this country’s wars have come home in the form of more mass shootings by white supremacist and anti-government types targeting minorities and people of color. Meanwhile, the DHS continued to focus disproportionately on the dangers of Islamist extremists, while overlooking the threat posed by far-right groups, despite their easy access to firearms and the reality that many of their members have military backgrounds. — Endless War as Forever Terrorism On the conflicts we can’t win and the suffering we don’t see.

Without ‘Radical Action,’ Warns OECD, Global Plastic Pollution Likely to Triple by 2060 “If we want a world that is free of plastic pollution,” says OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann, “we will need to take much more stringent and globally co-ordinated action.” A new report out Friday from the OECD warns that the amount of plastic waste worldwide is likely to nearly triple over the next four decades, leaving the world with a terrible fate by 2060 if “radical action” is not taken to curb the level of pollution. The report—titled “Global Plastics Outlook: Policy Scenarios to 2060“—predicts that nearly two-thirds of the estimated plastic waste polluting the environment by 2060 will be come from short-lived and single-use products such as packaging, cheap toys, consumer goods, household items, and textiles.

The seasonally-adjusted SGS Alternate Unemployment Rate reflects current unemployment reporting methodology adjusted for SGS-estimated long-term discouraged workers, who were defined out of official existence in 1994. That estimate is added to the BLS estimate of U-6 unemployment, which includes short-term discouraged workers. The U-3 unemployment rate is the monthly headline number. The U-6 unemployment rate is the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS) broadest unemployment measure, including short-term discouraged and other marginally-attached workers as well as those forced to work part-time because they cannot find full-time employment.

The day-to-day cost of running his operation was already escalating quickly coming into 2022 amid rampant inflation and supply chain bottlenecks: fertiliser, diesel, electricity and freight were all marching higher. . . . Perkins’s experience echoes that of many farmers in North America’s farming heartlands even as grain prices hit the highest levels in a decade. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is threatening food shortages in import-dependent nations, but it is also increasing costs for growers based in big agricultural exporters. The primary challenge for US and Canadian farmers is the price of fertiliser. Soaring natural gas prices have pushed up the cost of nitrogen-based fertilisers such as ammonia, which jumped from about $700 a tonne in August to more than $1,600 in May. The price of potash, rich in potassium, has hit records above $1,100 a tonne as sanctions curtail supplies from Russia and Belarus, which together account for almost 40 per cent of global supply. “We’re in uncharted territory, in terms of fertiliser costs.
