Quotes of the Day:
John Deere workers are unhappy with a concession made in contract negotiations in the 1990s, when the company created two tiers of employees so that workers hired after 1997 would receive worse benefits. Only workers hired before 1997 get full pension and health care benefits when they retire; newer hires only get a third of the previous pension and no health care in retirement. Now, the company is trying to create a third tier that eliminates pension completely, which has outraged workers.“There is much more anger. We are tired. We are tired of making pennies. Tired of spending more time in the building than with our family. We have given them so much of our life,” one worker told Labor Notes reporter Jonah Furman. “We have some in their 70s still working for the healthcare. We don’t want a two tier. They are trying to create a three tier. We will not sell out our younger brothers and sisters.” — 10,000 John Deere Workers Walk Off Job as Strike Wave Sweeps US

Ali Alexander Subpoenaed by Congress  Exposed as instigator behind illegal Jan 6 march on Capitol Congress finally subpoenaed Ali Alexander, whom our investigation exposed as the instigator of the illegal January 6 march on the capitol. We had, on January 8 also disclosed that the Georgia Republican Party had officially sponsored Alexander despite his threats of violence if Trump were not declared re-elected. The Select Committee to Investigative the January 6th Attack on the United State Capitol filed subpoenas targeting Ali Alexander and his group, Stop the Steal LLCNathan Martin, an organizer with Stop the Steal, was subpoenaed along with Alexander, the group’s founder.  Alexander claims he organized rallies with permits on January 5 and 6, but was not involved in the attack on the Capitol. However, evidence obtained by the Palast Investigative Fund revealed that Alexander led the march from the rally at the Ellipse, at which President Trump spoke, that led to the Capitol riot, though both Alexander (and Trump) were informed the march was dangerous and illegal.

Labor:
Over 10,000 Deere Workers Launch First Strike In 35 Years Approximately 10,100 workers at agricultural equipment giant Deere and Company began to strike at midnight Central Time early Thursday morning. The workers are located at plants in Iowa, Illinois and Kansas, as well as two parts centers in Georgia and Colorado. The walkout is the first at the company in 35 years and is the largest strike by manufacturing workers in the US since the 40-day strike at General Motors in 2019.     The strike follows the overwhelming rejection by workers, in a 90 percent “no” vote last Sunday, of a concessions contract backed by the United Auto Workers (UAW). The deal would have included wage increases of just 11-12 percent over six years, well below the current inflation rate. It also would have ended pensions for workers hired after November this year, expanding the tiers first established by Deere and the UAW in 1997.

Shadow Government Statistics Alternate Inflation Charts The CPI chart on the home page reflects our estimate of inflation for today as if it were calculated the same way it was in 1990. The CPI on the Alternate Data Series tab here reflects the CPI as if it were calculated using the methodologies in place in 1980. In general terms, methodological shifts in government reporting have depressed reported inflation, moving the concept of the CPI away from being a measure of the cost of living needed to maintain a constant standard of living.

Italy: For a Mass Response to the Fascist Provocation! Last Saturday (9 October), hundreds of fascists attacked and vandalised the premises of the national headquarters of the CGIL (Italian General Confederation of Labour) in Rome.  They did so during a demonstration against the so-called green pass (indicating one’s COVID-19 vaccine status), which the government imposed as mandatory in all workplaces on 15 October. This measure is unleashing anger among a section of the workers (though not the majority), and especially from the petty bourgeoisie and the lumpenproletariat. This confused rage has opened up a certain political space for the right and the extreme right.

The capitalist market means anarchy and crisis. Only socialist planning can offer a way forward.Health, Education, and Welfare:
The government of the United States can pass laws in a few days to spend tens of trillions of dollars for war and the bailout of Wall Street and the bankers. Yet, those who pass universal healthcare for themselves, but cannot spend even one trillion dollars for universal health for those who are ‘governed’! This is what is considered, by the powers to be,  a democracy and part of the democratic way. — Roland Sheppard, Let the People  Vote on Healthcare!
Study Cited by Antivaxxers Is Retracted After Authors Admit Mathematical Error  Last month, a research study was published suggesting coronavirus vaccines were linked to heart inflammation, giving fuel to a number of anti-vaccination websites — but that study is now being retracted due to an enormous miscalculation by the study’s authors.   The University of Ottawa Heart Institute paper, which was published on September 16 before being peer-reviewed, erroneously claimed that 1 in 1,000 people who received an mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccine developed a heart inflammation condition called myocarditis.
Dermatology’s Academic Medical-Industrial Complex: Another Marker of a Wider Problem The health care system has been increasingly corporatized since the 1980s, soon accompanied by the growth of investor-owned corporate health care across many parts of the system. This invariably led to more opportunities for conflicts of interest between industry and segments of the profession. More recently, those conflicted ties have further grown by the rise of private equity investment in various parts of health care among Wall Street brokers and investors, invariably with the primary intent to maximize financial returns.
