The Crime of the CentryA Must See Documentary: Big Pharma’s $9 Billion Cozy FDA Revolving Door Relationship: The Crime of the Century Review: Alex Gibney’s Shattering HBO Documentary Drills Deep into the Opioid Crisis The two-part film is a vision of how America embraced the corruption of legalized drug pushing. When you hear the phrase “the opioid crisis,” it can sound like it’s referring to a natural disaster with a beginning and an end. But as Alex Gibney’s shattering two-part, four-hour HBO documentary “The Crime of the Century” makes devastatingly clear, the opioid crisis is more than a human tragedy that has claimed half a million lives. It’s part of what America has become. We’re a nation of addicts, fueled by scuzzy alternating currents of pleasure and despair; a nation of corporate malfeasance; of doctors who knowingly trash the credo of “do no harm”; of regulatory agencies that no longer function as they were designed to; of politicians who allow laws to be written for them. “The Crime of the Century” is a saga of addiction that could have been entitled “What We Did for Greed.” Review By Owen Gleiberman
Worse Than the Dreyfuss Affair: the Persecution of Julian Assange It may appear unnecessary to repeat the truism that democracy depends on transparency and accountability, and yet, how often has the democratic order been betrayed by our leaders in the recent past? How often have the media abandoned their watchdog function, how often have they simply accepted the role of an echo-chamber for the powerful, whether government or transnational corporations? Biden’s First Immigration Court Picks Are All Judges Selected Under Trump Immigration advocates sounded the alarm after the Biden administration’s first list of new immigration court picks was filled entirely by judges selected under former President Donald Trump. The Justice Department last week released a list of 17 new immigration judges, who decide whether to grant asylum claims or deport migrants. “The 17 new immigration judges referenced in the notice all received their conditional offers under the prior administration,” a DOJ spokesperson told The Hill, despite President Biden’s vow to undo his predecessor’s damage to the country’s immigration system. Big Oil’s Malign Influence is Waning at Last It has enriched us, even dictated our politics, but now we know Big Oil’s malign influence we want no more of this black gold. Despite the hold that oil has had on our lives for the last century through cars, chemicals, plastics, pesticides and almost every facet of daily life, including keeping millions of people in employment, it is something few of us ever think about. Big Oil’s malign influence has left us unaware. But oil has a remarkable story to tell: its rise, its ascendancy in all our lives, and now, if civilisation is to survive, its fall. These phases are all described in a new book, Crude Britannia: How Oil Shaped a Nation.Chemical Industry/Government Partnership: Poisoning the Planet’s Web of Life The Web of Life is under attack but almost nobody is aware because it’s happening mostly below surface. Scientists have identified a rampant worldwide Bugpocalypse that’s methodically killing the planet’s most significant and most crucial life support system, and it’s intentional! The victim is soil, which is the life source for 95% of the foods we cram down our throats three times per day, 365 days per year.A new landmark study has identified the killer of nature’s greatest achievement of all time, soil. Based upon this major new research only recently released, the culprit or soil killer is agricultural pesticides, as follows: “Study after study indicates the unchecked use of pesticides across hundreds of millions of acres each year is poisoning the organisms critical to maintaining healthy soils,” Donley added. “Yet our regulators have been ignoring the harm to these important ecosystems for decades.” (Source: Tari Gunstone, et al, Pesticides and Soil Invertebrates: A Hazard Assessment, Frontiers in Environmental Science, May 4, 2021) By Robert Hunziker

Who Cleans the Country? The Covid-19 pandemic has wrought vast changes in US lifestyles, but one aspect remains unchanged: housework is still a mostly a female domain and minorities and immigrants clean up the country, said Nicole Froio, a Colombian-Brazilian journalist researcher and author of the recent article, “The Pandemic Housework Dilemma Whitewashed.” “Housework is not seen as productive work – it’s seen as maintenance,” said Froio. The people that do the cleaning are devalued.
Latinos and the Shrinking White Majority The Census Bureau predicts that Anglo whites will become a minority in the US by 2145 — but, what if significant numbers of Latinos embrace whiteness, and Anglo whites welcome them into the fold? “We see that happening already with the Ted Cruzes and Marco Rubios of the world,” said Dr Shantee Rosado, a professor of Afro-Latinx Studies at Rutgers University, whose book project is titled “Latinxs and the Emotional Politics of Race and Blackness in the U.S.” At the same time, however, “there is a push to say that race matters, mainly among indigenous and Black Latinos,” said Shantee.
Massive Resistance to Austerity Regime in Colombia Broad sectors of Colombian society continue a national strike against the US-backed regime’s attempt to impose harsh austerity measures. “What we have seen is a very strong unification between the many sectors – health, labor, women, indigenous, African descendants. All of them are protesting this criminal government,” said Charo Mina-Rojas, of the Black Communities Process organization, speaking from a roadblock outside the largely Black city of Cali. Police and paramilitaries have killed scores of young Black protesters in the coastal cities.

The Smartest Guys in the Room Call Bitcoin “Rat Poison Squared,” “a Colossal Pump-and-Dump Scheme” and “a Big Criminal Scam” but Federal Regulators Look the Other Way Anne Goldgar wrote of the Dutch Tulip bubble in her 2007 book, Money, Honor, and Knowledge in the Dutch Golden Age, that “the f1000 one might pay in January 1637 for one hypothetical Admirael van der Eyck bulb,” could have bought “a modest house in Haarlem,” or “nearly three years’ wages” of a master carpenter. Comparing that to U.S. dollars in 2007, the year her book was released, Goldgar says it would be like one Tulip bulb selling for $12,000. Goldgar notes that as historians have looked back at this episode, the tulip mania of the 1630s in Holland has become a “byword for idiocy.” By Pam Martens and Russ Martens

Education, Health, Science, and Welfare:
The government of the United States can pass laws in a few days to spend tens of trillions of dollars for war and the bailout of Wall Street and the bankers. Yet, those who pass universal healthcare for themselves, but cannot spend even one trillion dollars for universal health for those who are ‘governed’! This is what is considered, by the powers to be, a democracy and part of the democratic way. — Roland Sheppard, Let the People Vote on Healthcare
