U.S. Congressperson and former civil rights activist/organizer John Lewis was laid to rest today.  His service took place at the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.  The ministerial home of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the 50s and 60s, Ebenezer has a long history with African people’s struggle for freedom and justice.  That’s why its surreal that we find ourselves in a place today where someone like Bill Clinton can be welcomed into the pulpit at Ebenezer to offer an opinion on the correct path African people must take to achieve our forward progress.  Clinton, of course, was the 42nd president of the U.S. empire.  His claim to fame while being president was fooling scores of Africans into believing that he was our friend.  It wasn’t until Obama was elected in 2008 that some African people stopped referring to Clinton as “our first Black president.”  Underneath the superficial character presentation of Clinton existed a politician who built, along with his wife and many other opportunists a colossal industry based on imprisoning African people in this country.  The Omnibus Crime bill, passed during Clinton’s tenure in 1994, proliferated incarceration rates, primarily of poor and African and/or Indigenous peoples, at record rates.  And, yet, despite that clear legacy of harm caused against our people, we still invite someone like this to speak in one of our most storied and respected churches.  As a result, it should come as no surprise that Clinton used his opportunity to honor Lewis by taking a swipe at the legacy of Kwame Ture (Stokely Carmichael).  Ture, was the organizer within the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) who unseated Lewis as chairperson of SNCC in 1966, thus signaling SNCC’s turn towards much more militant politics.  In Clinton’s words, this nation is in such a better place because Lewis refused to continue within SNCC after “Stokely.”  Of course, the position advanced by Clinton should surprise no one who has studied the history of this man.  And, it was ironic that Clinton reminisced during his Lewis speech about “being with Jesse Jackson” because it was Jackson who was at the center of one of Clinton’s first clear indications of what type of snake he really was.  During his 1992 presidential campaign against George H.W. Bush (the first Bush president), Clinton used a traditional Southern Strategy race baiting tactic to call out Jesse Jackson, who at that time was considered one of the leading civil rights leaders in the U.S.  Clinton did this by making a public reference to Jackson having some type of political comradery with then so-called “Blacktivist”, rapper, Sista Souljah who had made a name for herself by calling out white supremacy in uncompromising terms.  Clinton, in a direct appeal to bourgeoisie voters, primarily European ones, attacked Jackson at that time as pandering to racist African militancy.  — John Lewis, Kwame Ture, Bill Clinton & Illusions of Progress

A Battle Plan So Subtle It Sends You To Sleep So says renowned economist Michael Hudson in the concluding part of our recent interview with him. Hudson makes no bones about the deadly serious game being played by the world’s financial powers and their intention to create a new feudal economic order. Hudson sees the privatization of public assets and institutions, like the Fed’s take-over of the Treasury a hundred years ago, as evidence that our struggle for people-focused public policy is being overwhelmed by debt at the hands of capitalism and greed. But people are rising-up as our guest Rickey Gard Diamond, author of “Screwnomics”, says in her recent article in Ms. Magazine “How Public Banks Make Black Lives Matter”. She talks with us about women and minorities becoming agents for change in the evolving public discourse about our money. United States:

The United States is not a Democracy (A government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly)! Only the 1%, through their ownership of the Reublicrats and who profit from war and the war budget, vote for War and the war budget — A policy, which Gore Vidal called a  Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace. — The 99% Should Decide On War — Not Just The 1% Who Profit From War!  Under a Democracy, The 99% would have the right to vote on the policy of Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace! The United States takes from the poor and gives to the Rich.

If the Federal Reserve Had Pumped More than $6 Trillion For Health, Education, And Welfare, Instead of to Wall Street in the Recent Six Week Period, The Schools Would Have Been Able to Open and We Could Have Begun to Control The Coronavirus Pandemic! — Another Demonstration, Of The Fact, That Capitalitalism Is  Has Outlived Its’ Time — That Preserving Profits Come Before Preserving Humanity!

Proof That The Trump Administration is Guilty of Depraved Indifference Murder!: Kushner Should Be Arrested!:  Demands for Kushner to Resign Over ‘Staggering’ Level of ‘Depravity’ That Put Politics Before Public Health “Holy hell. Jared Kushner reportedly abandoned a national testing plan because it was *politically advantageous* to sit back and let blue states be eviscerated by the virus.” By Jon QueallyThe Trump Administration of Coronavirus Profiteers: Trump’s Vaccine Chief Picks His Own Former Employer—Where He Still Holds Millions Worth of Stock—for $2.1 Billion Deal “You can’t have a contractor supervising government officials.” The White House on Friday awarded a record-breaking $2.1 billion contract for the development of a Covid-19 vaccine, raising questions about a former pharmaceutical executive’s involvement in the administration’s decision. The deal is for 100 million doses of a vaccine manufactured by Sanofi, a French drug maker, and its British partner GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). As Fortune reported: The deal follows billions of dollars of U.S. commitments to other experimental vaccines—all still needing to show their effectiveness in testing—and may stoke concerns that other countries will be left behind. Vaccines are seen as the key to leading the world out of the pandemic that has killed about 675,000 people in a matter of months. By Eoin Higgins

Tear Gas and Thugs at the BLM Protests in Portland Russiagate, Nazis, and the CIA On the 59th night of BLM protests on July 25th at the federal courthouse, I was one of the thousands of protestors who went there.   It took me a while to struggle through my fears of getting infected with the virus and the limits to my mobility due to old age and hip arthritis.  But like so many others, I could no longer stay home.  I knew from my previous experiences at many protests over the years, against war, racism, ICE, inequality, and exploitation of workers, that the police were extremely violent, often attacking us with little or no provocations.   What was new was that the police had been attacking the BLM protestors non-stop for 58 nights with tear gas, pepper spray, flash grenades, and “non-lethal” munitions.  In contrast to their long history of using violence against non-violent protestors, the Portland police were seen protecting and fraternizing with white supremacist groups like the Patriot Prayer and Proud Boys at their rallies in this whitest of all US cities.   When Mayor Ted Wheeler appeared at a protest last week, he was booed by many there, who called out “Tear gas Ted.”   Later that night, Wheeler got a big dose of his own “medicine.” By Bette LeeRussiagate, Nazis, and the CIA The political success of Russiagate lies in the vanishing of American history in favor of a façade of liberal virtue. Posed as a response to the election of Donald Trump, a straight line can be drawn from efforts to undermine the decommissioning of the American war economy in 1946 to the CIA’s alliance with Ukrainian fascists in 2014. In 1945 the NSC (National Security Council) issued a series of directives that gave logic and direction to the CIA’s actions during the Cold War. That these persist despite the ‘fall of communism’ suggests that it was always just a placeholder in the pursuit of other objectives. By Rob UrieThe Space Wars Have Begun “Space is now a distinct warfighting domain,” says the U.S. Defense Space Strategy. Last week, corporate media repeated U.S. military propaganda: that Russia had “tested new technologies that could lead to so-called ‘killer satellites’” (ABC); the U.S. and Britain “accused Russia of testing a weapon-like projectile in space that could be used to target satellites in orbit” (BBC); “the US has publicly accused Russia of testing an ‘orbit weapon’” (CNN); “The launch could represent a step towards the militarization of space”(Sky News); and so on. Roaming Charges: Demon Seed They came for Portland and Portland didn’t back down in the face of extreme state-sponsored violence. Instead, the resistance grew every night. The Feds got their asses kicked, here and in Seattle. Let’s hope it provides a model for the people of Cleveland, Chicago, Kansas City, and ABQ. By Jeffrey St. Clair

Environment:

Living Off The Land: The New Sisterhood of Black Female Homesteaders From the South Side of Chicago to tiny Carolina farms, a growing number of Black women are reclaiming the land – and their wellbeing he car made its way along a tree-lined gravel road. The sky was clear, and as the car drove by, the trees swayed from side to side, almost like a sign of welcome. The road opened up into a large pasture. In the middle of the pasture was a wooden pergola with grapes growing on it and a circular garden surrounding it. Tiny houses dotted the pasture, as brown children played merrily in the mud. In the center of all of this, planting in the circular garden like she was Mother Earth herself, was a Black woman.Civil Rights/Black Liberation:

There is no democracy in the United States! — Just democracy for the 1%!  When the order in the United States is economic and social inequality. The slogan ‘Law and Order’ means the maintenance of that order— Rich 1% First and the poorest of the 99% last!. Real democracy means that we all share the wealth equally! —Roland Sheppard

Monumental Contraction of US Economy Wipes Out Five Years of Gains Failure to address the pandemic head-on may have resulted in larger quarterly economic losses than were necessary.

Shadow Government Statistics Special Economic Commentary, Issue No. 1444 Real Average Weekly Earnings Continued Gyrating Sharply With Pandemic-Related Layoffs and Rehirings Weighted Heavily Towards Low-Wage Employees. Noted on page 3, of the June 2020, Employment Report, ―In June, average hourly earnings for all employees on private nonfarm payrolls fell by 35 cents to $29.37. Average hourly earnings of private-sector production and nonsupervisory employees decreased by 23 cents to $24.74 in June. The decreases in average hourly earnings largely reflect job gains among lower-paid workers.‖ While the discussion and graphing here is for related series, the effects are the same.

Amazon Had a Campaign to Destroy Competitors “the Way a Cheetah Would Pursue a Sickly Giselle” The CEOs of four of the most valuable technology companies in the world — Google’s Sundar Pichai, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and Apple’s Tim Cook — testified remotely on Wednesday in a House investigation into whether they are exercising monopoly power in violation of antitrust law in the United States and need to be broken up or more tightly regulated. Amazon and Facebook came out of the hearing the most severely damaged with evidence obtained by the House Judiciary’s Subcommittee on Antitrust, Commercial, and Administrative Law that strongly suggests they have engaged in illegal, predatory behavior. Education, Health, Science, and Welfare:

The government of the United States can pass laws in a few days to spend tens of trillions of dollars for war and the bailout of Wall Street and the bankers. Yet, those who ‘governn’, pass universal healthcare for themselves, but they cannot spend even one trillion dollars for universal health for those who are ‘governed’! This is what is considered, by the powers to be,  a democracy and part of the democratic way. — Roland Sheppard, Let the People  Vote on HealthcareDaily News Digest July 31, 2020
