There comes a time when people can no longer wait. There comes a time when a person must act. Each day that passes another freedom is lost, each hour that goes by another right is taken from us. Bold, creative and decisive leadership is needed, and I do not believe there is a group more suited for that task than the good and decent people of these United States. Two hundred and fifty years ago, a brave and daring people rose up in rebellion against a king, and now, with tyranny at our doorstep, it becomes the solemn duty of every citizen to rise up again and through numerous bold and daring actions that may include massive street demonstrations boycotts, general strikes and other acts of nonviolent civil disobedience make clear to this president and his administration that tyrants and dictators will not be tolerated, and that any attempt to subvert our democracy, freedom of speech and freedom of assembly will be resisted at every turn and with every ounce of our being. And just as our forefathers 250 years ago were willing to risk their lives, their fortunes and sacred honor so that this nation and democracy might be born, let us now be willing to risk again so that it might survive and long endure. I ask all of you in these difficult days ahead to bravely and with great dignity step over that line, and exert that powerful moral and spiritual force that you as citizens represent. White supremacy and slavery: Gerald Horne on the real story of American inpendence It’s time to revisit America’s heroic creation myth and what really happened in 1776, author-historian tells Salon With a sweeping and widely praised new essay on reparations in the Atlantic, Ta-Nehisi Coates has challenged Americans to reconsider how they view their country’s history and to place the influence of white supremacy front and center. Rather than imagine the damages inflicted against African-Americans by white supremacy as having occurred mainly during the antebellum period, Coates asks us to recognize how Jim Crow in the South and redlining in the North denied black people the means to build real, stable lives for themselves, directly explaining the disproportionate poverty we still see in the African-American community today. Yet as penetrating as Coates’ essay may be, a new book from University of Houston professor Gerald Horne would have our revision of our own history stretch back even further — to the very founding itself. In “The Counter-Revolution of 1776: Slave Resistance and the Origins of the United States of America,” Horne marshals considerable research to paint a picture of a U.S. that wasn’t founded on liberty, with slavery as an uncomfortable and aberrant remnant of a pre-Enlightenment past, but rather was founded on slavery — as a defense of slavery — with the language of liberty and equality used as window dressing. If he’s right, in other words, then the traditional narrative of the creation of the U.S. is almost completely wrong.

Neoliberalism drove tens of millions of disenfranchised, desperate people into the arms of Christian fascists, who preyed on their despair and sold them the fantasy of magic Jesus. It drove them into the arms of conspiracy theorists and right-wing charlatans. It drove them down the self-destructive rabbit holes of alcoholism and opioid addiction, compulsive gambling, domestic and sexual violence. These were the inevitable consequences of personal stagnation, disempowerment and feelings of worthlessness, frustration and profound despair. Neoliberalism ignores the cries of its victims. It dismisses their suffering and rage as irrational, ignorant and racist. It neuters liberal reforms, rendering them cosmetic and useless. Liberal apologists for neoliberalism, no longer concerned with economic justice, retreat into boutique activism. They mouth empty slogans about diversity and political correctness while pretending the relentless class war, unleashed globally since the 1970s, does not exist. The victims of neoliberal deindustrialization, 30 million of whom lost their jobs in the U.S. in mass layoffs, understand that the precarity of their existence does not concern their neoliberal masters.

The U.S. Economy is Shite Today’s report from the BLS Job growth slowed considerably last month. Employers added a less-than-expected 57,000 jobs in June, according to Labor Department data out today. That’s far below the 129,000 jobs added in May and comes amid high anxiety about the state of the American economy. According to today’s report, average hourly earnings increased by 3.5 percent. But prices are increasing at an annual rate of 4.2 percent. What do you get when prices are increasing faster than wages? You get people who are becoming poorer. And what do you get when people become poorer? Angry voters. Trump is constantly talking about the strength of the stock market. This morning he even shared a link to an article called “S&P 500 closes with strongest quarter since 2020.” Yesterday, when asked about the huge profits he’s made off his stock trades, he countered, “Well, you know why I’m profiting? Cause the stock market’s going up. Everybody’s profiting.” The truth is most Americans aren’t profiting in the stock market. The richest 10 percent own over 90 percent of the value of all shares of stock. The richest 1 percent own over half of the value of all shares of stock. (Actually real wage have not increased since 1972 and have drastically declined since the Labor/Employer Partenership was codified in 1985!)

Alternative measures of labor underutilization and the fact that labor force participation rate dropped, this month to 61.5%, my guesstimate rate of unemployment is still over 30%!
